Munich Open Air: Honest Review of a Tina Turner Tribute Show
Going to a tribute show can be a bit of a gamble, right? You’re hoping the performer captures the magic of the artist you admire without it feeling, so too it’s almost, like a cheap imitation. I went to the “Just Tina Turner Tribute Show” at Munich Open Air with, really, pretty high hopes but also, maybe, a little bit of hesitation. What I found, basically, was a night that was, seriously, quite fun, but it came with, like, some ups and downs that are, obviously, worth talking about if you’re thinking of going.
The Venue: Setting the Stage
The Munich Open Air location is, still, pretty cool. It’s, like, an outdoor space, and the setup is, generally, fairly well organized. There’s, you know, that summer breeze which could be blowing, maybe, through the crowd and a big stage, arguably, set against, pretty much, the city’s backdrop. That sounds great. However, for the “Just Tina” event, the sound quality was a bit spotty. During certain high-energy songs, there was a little distortion and sometimes the sound was, basically, too loud, and other times you could, sort of, not really hear all that much. That meant you could, sometimes, miss some of the nuances of the performance.
Also, since it’s open air, checking the weather is an absolute must. Fortunately, the weather that night was agreeable, that is until a little bit of drizzle, very, very lightly, started toward the very end of the concert. That could be pretty disruptive. One other point; that the ground, for most of the standing section, can be uneven, which could be annoying after standing for quite a while. Think comfortable shoes!
The Performer: Capturing Tina’s Spirit
Now, about the heart of the show: the Tina tribute artist. You know, I’d say that she certainly had Tina’s stage presence nailed. She moves, kind of, in a way that’s similar, and gives off a similarly electric sort of energy, clearly working pretty hard to mirror Tina’s signature moves. Her voice was, in some respects, impressively powerful too; when she was singing some of Tina’s biggest hits, she hit a fair number of the right notes and made those big songs sound good.
Yet, that said, it felt almost, like, there was a point where some moments sounded too practiced, or even forced. A more organic or free sounding vibe would be a whole lot better. And, while, definitely, there were flashes of brilliance, arguably, some of her, slightly, smaller mannerisms and inflections that are Tina’s unique style, arguably, were glossed over just a bit.
The Music: Hits and Misses
The set list was, pretty much, packed with, like, all the classic Tina tunes you’d hope to hear. “Proud Mary,” “Simply the Best,” and “What’s Love Got to Do with It” – you betcha, they were there! And when she sang those well-known hits, arguably, the crowd truly got into the experience, often with groups of people happily belting out lyrics and generally showing that they were really happy.
The band was competent, still, it wasn’t spectacular. Though tight and obviously well rehearsed, it lacked the dynamism to, pretty much, bring the roof down. It’s almost, like, with music like Tina’s, you sort of, actually, need that raw fire and spark, to make things take off, which was very obviously something that just wasn’t there every time.
The Crowd & Atmosphere
A tribute concert is all about atmosphere. The audience really shapes what it feels, arguably, like. That is unless the place feels, a little bit, flat; there can be little spark or no electricity. Now the crowd, seriously, had plenty of Tina devotees. A few dressed up in outfits that reflected the era of the songstress. Basically, that made it a special thing to witness, you could say.
Still, for those seated in the stands, or who don’t like jumping around; maybe the setup didn’t work for everyone, so to speak. Getting there to the show and leaving were pretty slow processes that tested peoples’ patience levels; you really had to stay on top of the transport plans well beforehand.
Final Verdict: Worth It?
So, that is unless you’re a major Tina Turner admirer, it is likely you’ll discover bits of this tribute to like; then again, you might find the presentation wanting when matched against memories of the real deal. While the impersonator brings drive and is fairly well cast, arguably, the performance did sway from great in the high spots, still, to occasionally missing elements in terms of detail. Basically, the outdoor spot does have its pluses, obviously, however challenges around getting there, sound inconsistencies and weather are areas you would need to consider ahead of time.
Did I enjoy myself? Absolutely! Despite its shortcomings, the “Just Tina Turner Tribute Show” delivers a good night of fun, especially if you embrace the spirit of the music and the camaraderie of the crowd. That said, go knowing its limitations, and you’re more likely to have a truly great time.
Remember, music is, definitely, about shared experiences, about a lot of laughs, singing at the very top of your voice, then of course feeling carried back into places by some classic songs! Even, arguably, with sound quirks as well as transport delays, it might just do the trick to bring, basically, such sentiments on with, too it’s almost, no effort. But, be aware so as to make your experience extra enjoyable!
