Mostar & Beyond: A Day Trip Review with Local Food

Thinking of seeing more than just Mostar when visiting Bosnia and Herzegovina? So, a day tour hitting Mostar, Pocitelj, and Hutovo Blato, with some of the region’s cooking added in, might just be the ticket for you. Basically, I hopped on one such adventure and here’s a download on what it’s actually like, you know, good points and things to watch out for, as a matter of fact.

Charming Pocitelj: A Step Back In Time

Pocitelj historical village view

First up on the itinerary was Pocitelj, a stone-built village with quite the story. Apparently, the van pulled up and I felt as if I’d gone back centuries. As a matter of fact, climbing the steep, uneven steps between houses certainly does require proper footwear, you see. So, do leave those cute sandals at your hotel. The views as you climb up? Really very worth the effort. Apparently, even if it’s only partially restored, Pocitelj is very charming and gives a really unique feel for Bosnia’s previous times.

That being said, it gets super hot up there! Arguably, bring water and maybe plan your climb earlier or later in the day to bypass the intense midday sun.

Hutovo Blato: Birdwatcher’s Dream

Then there’s Hutovo Blato, a marsh area that’s basically bird paradise. Usually, you get a boat tour as a part of the trip. We spotted different birds— I could barely name any, actually. Just being surrounded by such calm nature, it was genuinely quite calming and a really wonderful breather after the old town crowds.

So, the boats are rather simple, you see. It is a nature reserve rather than a luxurious cruise, like your usual riverboat. Bring sunblock and maybe some bug spray, to be honest. That’s like your wetland must-have toolkit.

Mostar: The Iconic Bridge and More

Of course, the star is Mostar’s Old Bridge (Stari Most). Basically, seeing it in person is way cooler than seeing pics. Still, expect tons of folks with the same thought. To be honest, our tour made sure that we had free time to roam around, so we could check out everything. From checking out the local shops to stopping to grab coffee by the Neretva River, like your postcard-perfect shot.

Anyway, a heads-up: Mostar gets so packed! Typically, you’re going to want to be prepared to deal with crowds, most of all during peak season. Think carefully when choosing to visit, right.

A Taste of Herzegovina: The Local Food Experience

One huge perk of doing this tour? Obviously trying genuine local foods. Of course, our guide led us to a spot where we dug in on food that’s common in Herzegovina, you see, and not some tourist version of it, too it’s almost. Arguably, you should ask about any meal alternatives if you’ve any food restrictions or preferences. All the better for enjoying, you know, the experience.

Also, do try to be open-minded, by the way. Genuine local grub might include stuff you usually would not go for, like your opportunity to be food-courageous!

The Guides and Getting Around

Tour guide explaining history

Our guide was fantastic. Just packed with details about the places, a bit of the past, a little of current happenings. I think having someone who lives in the region can actually make quite a difference to what you get out of the adventure, alright. A bit of background: Typically, these tours drive you around in vans or small buses, so plan to get real cozy with your co-travelers!

Any way you look at it, a plus about joining this tour? Basically, zero headaches related to driving, looking up spots, or timing connections, of course. Instead, you are free to savor. Anyway, it makes for such a hassle-free adventure.

Things To Consider Before You Go

So, is this particular tour the perfect match? Typically, weigh some things beforehand. Think how you feel regarding really packed trips. We hit up many different destinations, so that could be exhausting if that does not suit you. Also, to be clear, think what time of year it is. The weather conditions significantly affect that experience!

Anyway, be ready for an entire day out! Generally, you’ll leave early and return rather late, of course. Make sure your camera or phone are charged; otherwise, you’ll feel regret.

Is this tour right for you?

Considerate man

Are you after experiencing as many gems as you can from Herzegovina, you know, even if a little briefly, for instance? Are you interested in checking amazing sights with little planning on your part? Well, this day tour strikes an exceptional compromise.

Nonetheless, perhaps you’re the kind of person preferring to check out locations in slow motion and savor all the small details, in other words. Probably a series of daytrips, each dedicated a whole destination, is often much more up your street.
