Mnemba Island: Dolphin Swim & Snorkeling Review (with Lunch!)

Thinking of a Zanzibar trip, maybe with a side of dolphin watching? So, Mnemba Island is, maybe, that place people are talking about for swimming with dolphins and snorkeling. Like your average person, I went to find out what the fuss was about. Here’s what I came across, more or less, on this aquatic excursion, and like what to realistically expect from your adventure.

What is Mnemba Island Anyway?

Mnemba Island? Basically, actually, it’s this little island, sort of like, just off the northeast coast of Zanzibar. What is really fascinating is, maybe, the atoll that goes all the way around it, and that area’s really protected, more or less. This thing means the water’s just teeming with all kinds of stuff: bright corals, loads of different fish, and apparently, the celebrity guests here are the dolphins.

Now, it’s almost a desert island kind of set-up for the actual island; it is privately owned and you can’t exactly just visit it as you like, in that case. Most people will come with a tour, just for activities out on the water like snorkeling and that dolphin swimming business.

Booking my Mnemba Adventure (and what it cost!)

Going online and comparing what’s available could be wise; you know, tons of tour people are going to offer nearly the same Mnemba package. So, prices may really bounce around a bit, relying upon what the thing includes and maybe the tour operator. The prices I saw really averaged in the $150-$250 USD ballpark, in short. Usually, almost, that would hook you up with the boat trip itself, your snorkeling gear, park fees if you have them, and grub is often part of the mix, in fact.

In that case, it is important to read the fine print. What looks cheaper, you see, could skip out on some important stuff, maybe, and those “extras” really do add up, apparently. As I was saying, things such as included drinks, better equipment, and smaller groups are those factors that really affect the total price tag. For my trip, I was wanting something that was, basically, like not some madhouse-crowded thing. So, I ended up shelling out just a bit more to travel with fewer folks. I am glad I spent more, for real.

My Day Unfolds: From Hotel Pick-Up to Dolphin Dreams

The tours? They will very likely set you up with getting picked up from your hotel; as a matter of fact, that’s very common, very, and from there it will likely be some type of bus ride up to a spot on the coast, maybe, that sits in that northern area of Zanzibar. Expect, in some respects, the drive to probably bounce from an hour to two or something, relying upon just where you’re coming from.

Now, the boat bit could also change things up a bit, from those very quick speedboats, or a very traditional dhow type of situation. The ride to Mnemba might just take you like 20-40 minutes or thereabouts, maybe, in some way. What happened when we got there was boats everywhere. This? This seems, to me, normal. You’ll realize; maybe Mnemba is that hotspot people chat about when it comes to Zanzibar stuff.

The Dolphin Chase: Truth vs. Expectations

Alright, here is where things become more truthful and not just some Instagram stuff. Spotting the dolphins is, usually, actually a pretty high likelihood kinda thing, basically. But here’s a curveball: Swimming in the very same waters is likely a frenzy. That whole thing with people leaping off boats is just part of what tends to happen.

Very quickly, the dolphins apparently get circled, and everybody will be leaping right in, almost. Sometimes these beautiful animals could get scared with that stuff, alright, and could swim away from the noise and commotion. So, this became that couple-of-seconds type thing I had. Was this kinda cool? Definitely! Ethical? Not really positive.

Snorkeling Around Mnemba: A Clear Improvement

Now, after the frenzy of chasing those dolphins, luckily, the snorkeling was going to happen. Basically, it had been more of the chill thing I am searching for! What I thought? It’s really cool with lots of coral heads going every which way. Plenty of fish, lots of colorful stuff to stare at!

Just for total transparency, I didn’t think it was actually that ultimate kind of snorkeling spot. Now, I think I have spotted even cooler places around South East Asia. And that Mnemba thing might suffer just a little bit from its fame, so it does get tons of visitors, too. But do I like seeing a reef? Absolutely, just, there could be other amazing places, too.

Lunch on the Beach: or on the boat

What often will happen? After all that snorkeling business, you’re quite probably gonna be ravenous. A great number of tour operators, like I said, will make sure you have something to take the edge off. Now, this will vary depending upon what tour you selected. Is that going to be this spread right on the sand of some remote beach or might you eat on your boat? Depends, of course, too.

It is likely to be some of the Zanzibari staples in that buffet kinda style –grilled fish, different rice dishes, local sauces. Basically, this grub is always gonna hit that spot following all that activity in the sea! Drinks and food? All fine with me!

Is the Mnemba Island Trip Really Worth It?

Right, I will just keep it honest with everyone, this might be that complex type answer! Seeing those dolphins out there and getting close felt completely awesome. But what I don’t adore is just how crazy it got, kind of. Getting in the water became way too chaotic.

With this said, that snorkeling and seeing a whole reef has that real chill quality that really made the adventure still pretty exceptional. Is it costing too much, too? Hmm, arguably a little bit in some way for the experience. However, it depends just what you’re hoping to take away from everything. It will be those pluses and minuses to kinda ponder, in some respects.

Now, if witnessing dolphins feels that super big thing for you personally, I believe you are likely gonna think Mnemba is worth what it takes. But, if you can’t bear these kinds of large groups? You may want to locate other possibilities, clearly, that put quality even before anything.

Tips and Considerations for Mnemba Bound Travelers

• Pack reef-friendly sunscreen: Like your sunscreen could actually harm what lives underwater.
• Bring seasickness pills: Better just be ready for this boat thing.
• Consider a private tour: Splurge for the sake of not feeling stuck right in a madhouse situation.
• Respect the wildlife: Understand the effect just leaping into waters could potentially bring those poor animals.
• Confirm inclusions before you go: Just what equipment do you get? Does that cost extra, or are meals totally included.
