Mahachai Market & Maeklong Railway Tour Review: Is It Worth It?
Visiting Thailand can be a really memorable adventure, filled with beautiful temples, mouth watering eats, and bustling markets. I recently went on a day tour from Bangkok to Mahachai Market and the Maeklong Railway Market. And so, I want to share my experience and provide an honest review, to perhaps help you decide if this is something you would actually enjoy doing on your visit.
First Stop: Exploring Mahachai Fish Market
Our first spot on the tour was Mahachai Fish Market, a local trading center which is really bursting with all types of marine life. As a matter of fact, the moment we got there, the pungent aroma of the sea definitely hit us. This market is where local fisherman come in order to sell their catch. To be honest, it can be pretty crowded. In some respects, walking between stalls piled high with fish, crabs, and all sort of sea food can actually feel like navigating an obstacle course.
What I really enjoyed, that, was seeing all the action. The way the vendors would skillfully negotiate prices, and how porters rushed with heavy baskets. It really paints a vibrant picture of local life. Actually, it’s probably worth keeping in mind that this market is very much geared to the local population, not especially made for tourists. Anyway, I saw very few tourists when I went. However, I actually liked this realness a little, to tell you the truth.
If you’re thinking of visiting, a bit, it is worth bringing some sturdy shoes because, honestly, the ground can get a little wet and slippery. Actually, because of the smells and how busy things are, it might not be perfect for anyone with a weak stomach, sort of. Basically, our tour, it included transport from Bangkok, plus guides who were rather knowledgeable. Honestly, this made the travel pretty easy. Actually, they provided plenty of background, so the insights into each marketplace were pretty helpful. First, you could be making your way by car or a minivan, subject to which group you pick, anyway.
