Alright, so you’re thinking of checking out Laguna 69 from Huaraz, is that right? This well known hike really does deliver, but wow, that trek can really test you. I went, and let me tell you, the sights you see really are amazing, plus the experience? Totally unforgettable.

Why Laguna 69 Should Be On Your List

Hiking to Laguna 69

Why should Laguna 69 even be on your radar? First, the color of the lagoon is unreal, very bright and stunning, it’s almost like someone cranked up the saturation in a photo. Nestled in the Cordillera Blanca, the mountain views around the lagoon add to the spectacular scene too. I felt very tiny standing there, next to this unbelievable creation. So if seeing natural beauty tops your list, yeah, add this.

Getting to Laguna 69: Tours vs. Solo Travel

Huaraz to Laguna 69 transportation

Okay, so how to get there, you may ask? Basically, you’ve got two options, very going with a tour group or trying the trip on your own. Tour groups really simplify things, providing transportation to where you need to go, a guide, plus you are travelling as a group. That being said, going solo gives you control, allowing you to set the pace that’s perfect for you, and so it often cuts the cost some.

I picked a tour, honestly, for peace of mind. Seriously, the logistics appeared difficult, and I liked not having to stress that. But, a handful of backpackers did do it independently, so you certainly could weigh your options and pick what works for your preferences and budget.

The Hike: What to Expect, what it looks like?

Laguna 69 hike difficulty

Now, for what to expect on the trail, this is essential. At the beginning, it starts off deceptively easy, that, gentle slopes by pretty streams. Seriously, do not let it fool you. As you move up, it begins to get a bit steeper, with some seriously rocky areas thrown in the mix too. Then, that final push is tough because there are some switchbacks up a crazy steep moraine.

Altitude makes this trek tougher. Laguna 69 is high, around 4,600 meters, so the air gets thin. Lots of people struggle with altitude symptoms, you get it, headache and feeling very light headed. Take your time, stay well hydrated and very listen to your body. The scenery will encourage you onwards.

What to Pack for your hike

Packing appropriately can drastically change how enjoyable the hike can be. I’d highly recommend layers of clothing since mountain weather tends to change rapidly. Then you will want trekking poles, good hiking boots, and yeah, sunscreen is important. And do not overlook water, snacks to replenish all those lost calories. Basically, being geared up means more fun on the trail.

Laguna Llanganuco: A Breathtaking Pit Stop

Here is a bonus! Most Laguna 69 tours tend to include a quick stop at Laguna Llanganuco, seriously, another crazy beautiful spot. These twin lagoons are surrounded with forests and Huascarán’s white peaks in the background, it creates this crazy picture that deserves lots of appreciation. Consider this a really gorgeous warm-up for the even greater sights up at Laguna 69.

I felt quite overwhelmed that I experienced seeing so much beauty within a span of one day!
