La Fortuna Hanging Bridges & Arenal Volcano Tour: A Personal Take with Lunch

Alright, so, if you’re thinking of checking out Costa Rica, like your typical first timer, the Arenal Volcano area is pretty much, the spot you will end up in, very quickly. But then, as I’m sure you’ve noticed, there are tons and tons of different tour choices, I mean basically all vying for your vacation dollars. And, that, basically, leads to option overload, am I right? This review aims to give you the inside scoop on one of the seriously most talked-about tours: The La Fortuna Hanging Bridges and Arenal Volcano tour that includes lunch. I went, I saw, and, honestly, I’m ready to share my thoughts, the unvarnished ones at that.

First Impressions: Gearing Up for Adventure

Hanging Bridges Arenal

Typically the tour began super early, probably to try and beat those brutal Costa Rican afternoons— more or less a solid move, that’s my thinking, at least. Pick-up from my hotel was, well, more or less punctual, that’s the long and short of it. Our guide, whose name was something along the lines of Javier (honestly I cannot fully recall), he clearly knew his stuff, I mean like an encyclopedia but for Costa Rican natural history and all that comes with it. The vibe on the van was quite lively, seemingly everybody was pretty psyched about getting their nature on, that’s a decent observation, I do reckon. I mean there was like, even some family from Ohio, as it turns out, their energy was totally contagious.

As we moved towards the hanging bridges, Javier, very casually, gave us some context. This wasn’t some hastily thrown-together tourist trap. Very actually, this park is clearly dedicated to maintaining the integrity of its corner of the rainforest, and just a little providing amazing eco-tourism adventures. He talked about the different ecosystems we would, to be sure, encounter, and the animal species very native to the region. I am inclined to note it wasn’t a dull lecture, and rather it was delivered, actually, with real passion, almost in a showman sort of way that drew everyone in to the adventure. It’s fair to say that pre-amble went miles beyond that of the regular corporate briefing I’m somewhat used to from previous tours, you know?

Suspended in Wonder: Walking the Hanging Bridges

La Fortuna Hanging Bridges

Okay, so the hanging bridges? Actually, these are quite the marvel of engineering – or so, that’s just how I found myself trying to describe them to someone afterwards. You’re sort of literally suspended high above the rainforest floor, anyway offering up these expansive views that can only be had when you rise beyond, you know, that dense vegetation. I was somewhat relieved they felt super secure underfoot. Some folks might be slightly concerned about swaying high above that drop, but frankly I found the gentle swaying a tad soothing, personally.

Javier, with, to be honest, like seemingly hawk-like vision, was spot-on at pointing out hidden wildlife. To give you a few examples, there was a sloth camouflaged among branches (a classic), vividly colored frogs chilling on enormous leaves, and monkeys swinging way overhead like seasoned pros, it should be noted. Honestly, he knew, almost uncannily, where to spot these guys, apparently adding, seriously, some solid value to the experience, frankly. I attempted to take, I reckon, stunning pictures, of course, but frankly they do not nearly compare to basically viewing everything with the human eye, literally. The air, by the way, was fresh, the smells earthy – more or less an absolute feast for your senses, very very delightful. I certainly appreciated having plenty of time, definitely not hurried, for us to relish, certainly the environment; this, actually, meant basically that my group avoided just running across, almost casually without any real regard for our surroundings, but just a little absorbing every last drop. Very, I recommend decent walking shoes though, to that point. The trails do get a bit uneven, just a bit.

Arenal Volcano: Majesty and History

Views of Arenal Volcano

Moving on from that unique perspective of rainforest ecosystems from the hanging bridges, the tour made headway more or less directly, anyway, towards the majestic Arenal Volcano. Obviously seeing Arenal, as a thing, it’s nearly one of the defining aspects of the area; basically like posing for a picture in front of the Eiffel Tower, if you will. Javier provided very intriguing insights into the history and geological background of the volcano, obviously telling some exciting tales of eruptions and its present condition of calmness, certainly now sleeping.

We checked out the volcano, alright, from a pretty unique vantage point that basically allowed pretty clear views — great news, indeed! Obviously getting the pictures I required for the Gram, very clearly. It, that being so, wasn’t just about pictures though. Javier helped me get a perspective of that bigger geological story which defines a chunk of that part of Costa Rica. From a point somewhere about that area, the area’s regeneration and biodiversity were strikingly obvious and well-highlighted, apparently emphasizing how nature sort of has the knack to bounce back and adapt, that’s kind of neat.

Lunch with a View: A Culinary Pause

Typical Costa Rica lunch

You know what, by midday, every one of us had certainly worked up an appetite from breathing that awesome rainforest air. In a very timely manner, that, to be sure, the tour was inclusive of a classic Costa Rican lunch at, it felt that way anyway, this awesome spot looking out at — yeah, you know it — the Arenal Volcano! Honestly it sounds fairly touristy I concede, but the meal actually stood up, genuinely.

You know there’s like nothing too flashy. Rather, just reliable gallo pinto (the rice-and-beans classic dish), fresh salads, perfectly cooked plantains, then select between some alternatives for your major protein. So good. You know I definitely was impressed with their vegetarian dishes which is kinda what I’d asked for on booking and that didn’t feel simply tacked on, more or less as an afterthought, that says something about service if you need to cater for different needs. More so, the meals provided at the cafeteria, more or less near the volcano area, actually really hit the spot, and almost really showed the traditional cooking designs of Costa Rica’s interior territories.

Worth It? Final Thoughts

So, if you are trying to make the decision about what to book in La Fortuna I might nudge you, probably, on account of its, value-packed nature to consider this tour offering, you know. This experience really blends adventure, some environmental understanding, all with some good opportunities to soak in great sights. I am of the belief it’s excellent, almost, actually, for people, honestly just as much that want a taste of rainforest experience at large than folks who want, that way, a little physical thing from the hanging bridges walks. But is, that said, mostly family-friendly but be real about everybody’s health.

Javier seriously shone through and created lots of distinction of our experience. Actually any of these tour operations might have great locations on their schedule, yet you almost need this kind of human factor to make you sense everything well. So what? Just make sure, I advise that way, you do not lose sight, you’ll get that memorable trip as well, definitely.
