Starting Your Day at Majestic Wawel Castle
Wawel Castle is where most people actually start, too it’s almost like the most prominent landmark in Krakow, looming large above the Vistula River. Is that the starting place? Yep, getting there nice and early is usually better in an effort to sidestep what could turn into some crowd action, specifically when you’re getting around in peak season.
Going from point A to point B is typically pretty easy. From the Old Town, you know, the one everyone visits, it’s really only a pleasant walk, something that takes you, potentially, a brisk ten to fifteen minutes. Yet, it can be a bit much if you attempt to explore literally everything in just one go. Arguably, the State Rooms could be a good choice; these are dripping, in a way, in history. The Royal Private Apartments? Also very cool if you have ever fancied what luxury must’ve appeared to people back in the day. It may sound cliché, yet they really whisk you back in time.
The Wawel Cathedral should really be just next door and it requires time, more or less, of its own. This might just sound obvious; I’m including this for completion. Really.
Exploring the Spiritual Heart: Wawel Cathedral
Wawel Cathedral is something that might seem very impressive right next to the castle, a place absolutely saturated in Polish history, too it’s almost like every single stone could share something with us. So, it’s that grand and kind of hard to skip over when you visit Wawel Castle.
Something you probably would want is getting tickets as soon as you show up in an effort to reduce time in lines and potentially get a look into the most favored segments. Apparently, seeing the Sigismund Chapel will impress pretty much anyone, it really has something when you view the very elaborate gold dome. And the tombs, as well, you know, in the crypt, I am talking about those with all of Poland’s past monarchs and notable figures – super sobering to be walking near these places.
That being said, climbing up the Sigismund Bell Tower may be worth doing just because, like your view is really breathtaking from up there, but, just a little heads-up, it might make some peoples’ legs burn. So, give yourself some grace and watch your hydration. Still, it really does make some interesting picture possibilities if you like doing photographs and, as I was saying, I certainly didn’t hate it!
Journey Beneath: Rynek Underground Museum
Rynek Underground is a genuinely odd change of environment following seeing the open spaces of Wawel as the Cathedral; I mean, now you get the chance to literally go deep under Krakow’s Main Market Square. And what is the purpose of this spot, you ask? Well, in short, Rynek Underground brings to life Krakow’s Medieval times employing exhibits along with archeological finds.
Something you would do well with when heading this direction is purchasing passes early due to, well, lots of demand – especially during the high seasons, then. This lets you keep your place and sidestep lengthy waits since it’s not very interesting being on holiday while standing and just twiddling one’s thumbs.
What I would advise to do is dedicate a pair of hours or so to wandering and exploring below. Seeing this history actually arise around one does add an amazing flavor and the historical displays have English translations also, because obviously it could suck to be lost on something you don’t speak.
Lunchtime in Krakow: Where to Refuel
Right around noontime? Probably, if you started with me you are thinking of where your belly can be pleased after visiting these big-name sights.
