Koh Tao Snorkeling: Is That Nang Yuan Island & its Hidden Bays Worth It? A Review

Koh Tao! So, it’s known for its amazing underwater spots, and it’s got some awesome trips you can take. Of all the available trips, visiting Nang Yuan Island and looking around for secret spots, you know, bays only locals might know of, sounds pretty good, right? So, let’s get into what that trip is like.

The Allure of Nang Yuan Island

Nang Yuan Island Thailand

Okay, so, Nang Yuan Island is that place everyone, typically, pictures when they talk about tropical paradises. So, picture this: it has super powdery white sand, crystal clear water, plus a view from the top that, in a way, makes your jaw drop. It is basically two or three little islands connected by a sandbar; and you know, just walking on it makes you feel, like, very special. That said, what’s it really like getting there, what do you need to keep in mind, and how much, you know, will that cost?

Getting There and Back

Koh Tao boat trip

Usually, almost all tours start from Koh Tao, right? So, you, usually, get picked up from your hotel. By the way, there is a small fee to actually enter the island (I wanna say 100 baht). Once you actually get to the island, usually the boat company lets you off and basically says ‘see you in four hours’. It’s almost as if that part is the main event and that’s where the whole trip will be taking place.

What To Do While There?

Four hours gives you a chance to take advantage of many activities. I mean, you know, snorkeling around the Japanese Gardens is one of the more popular choices, it is pretty great! Or, just lying on the beach, of course. Anyway, you should go to the top to that vista point – it’s fairly spectacular, if you don’t mind the hike, it does get tiring! Keep in mind that you, usually, cannot bring any plastic bottles to Nang Yuan Island to help protect it from getting polluted, so take note!

The ‘Hidden Bays’: A Snorkeling Paradise?

Here’s the kicker, right? So, a trip to ‘hidden bays’ sort of implies you’ll be checking out some secret, off-the-map spots. Now, the reality is, they’re almost never REALLY hidden. It is just a collection of okay places that not everyone typically goes to! Don’t get me wrong; the snorkeling’s fun, with, you know, plenty of fish to look at, and it’s still pretty exciting swimming in the open water from beach to beach!

What Marine Life Can You Expect?

Oh, you should know this, there is a wide array of life in this area, turtles! You will more or less see quite a few on a trip to these parts, usually. Moreover, reef sharks are pretty common in this area too! I mean, it sounds terrifying, but, generally, these tiny black tip reef sharks are pretty timid and, in a way, shy! The water has lots of coral as well as smaller colorful fish so, typically, the diversity makes the views very vibrant and stimulating! The reefs are more or less, sadly, damaged. The amount of tourism the place gets definitely shows its effects.

Snorkeling Conditions

Visibility? Well, visibility totally depends on the weather plus the time of year. Usually, mornings have the best visibility, while during the day, more tourists swimming around stirring things up so the clarity worsens quite a bit! Currents can get quite strong at times, very. Anyway, do heed the boat guide’s instructions – or better yet, wear a life jacket if you are not so confident.

Is it Actually Worth the Money?

Okay, here is a pretty fair question. A trip that involves a trip to Nang Yuan as well as the hidden bays is that something that should be entertained? Here’s my personal experience: Nang Yuan is great but it gets extremely busy! While the beaches on Koh Tao don’t have such scenery or views, they’re still plenty of fun and more chilled back so you can totally enjoy yourself at peace!

Pros and Cons

Pros and cons Koh Tao snorkeling

Okay, here’s a pro: you will get to see Nang Yuan Island; those sandbars, and, generally, it makes for great pictures! But, anyway, that spot can feel overcrowded, especially during that peak season. That trip, in a way, allows you to go snorkeling to more remote bays, but you will still see tons of boats. But you can also just visit those bays yourself by renting a scooter (something to take note of: some places are tough to get to so make sure that the scooter’s pretty powerful), so you won’t be limited to someone else’s itinerary!

Who is this Trip Ideal For?

Best snorkeling trip Koh Tao

Listen, this is a particularly excellent option if you want to check off Nang Yuan Island plus you only have a day. If you, potentially, value peace, consider just exploring the coastline of Koh Tao! In fact, there are better spots! This is specifically ideal for picture taking rather than having a great snorkeling adventure.

  • Amazing Views: Nang Yuan is quite pretty, particularly from that vista point.
  • Packed: Expect very crowded beaches, primarily at Nang Yuan.
  • Snorkeling Spots: The hidden bays could be amazing depending on the day.
  • Cost-Effective?: Depends if you want someone to plan your day for you; otherwise, renting your own scooter could be a better and more relaxing option.

Anyway, there you have it. All things considered, you are now very well equipped in planning that next potential excursion.
