This area, is it a spiritual haven known for its crystal-clear streams, lush forests, plus, oh yeah, its charming shrine, which provides a refreshing contrast to Kyoto’s more touristy spots.
Discovering Kifune Shrine
Kifune Shrine, its reputation built on being dedicated to the god of water and rainfall, is very inviting to those seeking a little luck in their relationships or, perhaps, a respite from the hustle of city life. Supposedly tucked away in the mountains north of Kyoto, this shrine, could it be one of the oldest and, indeed, perhaps most picturesque spots you could ever visit.
The shrine’s history is quite old, actually. Apparently dating way back, way back when, it’s thought to have begun as a place where people would pray for, like, rain during droughts and to prevent floods too it’s almost amazing that it’s lasted so long. The name “Kifune” supposedly comes from the legend of a goddess who traveled to this location by a boat – “ki” meaning wood and “fune” meaning boat – it all kind of fits together, right?
When you visit, anyway, you will be struck by the bright red lanterns that light the stone steps leading up to the main hall – a pretty striking sight, if I can say so myself. These lanterns, that cast a cozy glow, especially when lit at night, give the place an almost magical feel, wouldn’t you say?

Well, one very common activity involves drawing a water fortune (omikuji) – the paper reveals your fortune when you dip it in the shrine’s sacred water – what the water reveals, will it be something you want to find out? The main hall (honden), very impressive with its traditional architecture, makes a fab photo opp; make sure you stop to admire the intricate details, alright?
And the Yui no Yashiro, too it’s almost like a sub-shrine dedicated to matchmaking, you see people writing prayers on ema (wooden plaques) hoping to find love. If you’re travelling solo, just as I sometimes do, very don’t worry: it can be rather, very cathartic to participate in such activities; you never know what may happen, anyway.

The restaurants that do offer kawadoko dining, yet they’re usually open during the summer months (May to September), as that is the best weather to enjoy being outside, alright? Do you have to reserve in advance? Absolutely, it’s advisable, since it tends to be quite the tourist spot.
Exploring the Natural Beauty of the Valley
Even aside from the dining, by the way, Kifune Valley is just calling out for hikers plus nature lovers. Some great trails are available in varying lengths and difficulties; trails wind alongside that river and through that gorgeous forest. And don’t worry too it’s almost difficult to lose your way – the paths are, generally, well-maintained and decently marked, so that it isn’t very taxing at all.
