Khao Lak & Phang Nga Bay: James Bond Island Longtail Boat Trip Review

Khao Lak & Phang Nga Bay: James Bond Island Longtail Boat Trip Review

Okay, so you are looking into checking out Phang Nga Bay and the very famous James Bond Island, like your typical traveler from Khao Lak? That’s fantastic! I, too, once found myself in exactly that position. I’m very happy to share all about my recent day trip, so you get the lowdown before booking anything. This review gives you my complete take on seeing this amazing place by longtail boat, complete with the little pros, potential cons, and things you really want to know.

Why Pick a Longtail Boat to James Bond Island?

Longtail Boat Phang Nga Bay

Why did I grab a longtail instead of a speedboat or a tour boat? That’s a good question! I wanted something that, you know, was more chill and real. Speedboats are kinda quick, right? Too quick to soak up everything. Those bigger tour boats feel a little too crowded for my style. With a longtail boat, though, that trip felt super personal. That boat can just glide along the water, and it gives you some perfect snapshots. So it’s almost like, if you’re into easy-going vibes and seeing some true local Thai boating, a longtail makes a lot of sense. I chose it mostly because it felt like a better, more personable option, so that the experience can stay with you for a long time. I will not lie, those boats look gorgeous!

What to Expect on the Tour: The Itinerary

Phang Nga Bay Tour Itinerary

So, what does one of these day trips really look like? Let me, like, break it down. Usually, they pick you up from your resort bright and early, and you’ll drive to the departure pier, that’s usually in Phang Nga province, in Khura Buri or Takua Pa. Once at the pier, you will get on your boat to Phang Nga Bay!

Cruising Phang Nga Bay: As I was saying, right when we get on our boat, so the adventure began! Passing through the waters of Phang Nga Bay is, like, unreal. You get to watch the incredible limestone karsts rock islands shooting straight up out of the water. Pictures don’t really do them justice.

James Bond Island (Khao Phing Kan): Obviously, this is the, like, main event. The island is really something else! I mean, it has so much history to it. That tall, skinny rock known as Ko Tapu sticks straight out of the water, after its spot in “The Man with the Golden Gun.” Because the crowds tend to show up midday, like your experience could vary.

Floating Muslim Village (Koh Panyee): Koh Panyee offers, too, more than sightseeing; it’s a rich culture that really opened my eyes. That floating village is wild! It gives you, in some respects, a peek into how the local people live. Plus, like you can get some yummy seafood.

Canoeing through Caves: The tours tend to add in some canoeing via the mangrove lagoons, or caves around Phang Nga Bay. You will get a closer glimpse of the area’s ecology.

Lunch: So that food! So, it could either be at Koh Panyee, or included as a pack to bring with you on your trip, so it gives you fuel all day. I loved being able to taste some really great, truly local dishes!

The Longtail Boat Experience: Comfort and Considerations

Longtail Boat Comfort

Longtail boats, you know, they are not exactly the height of comfort. They usually are the bare-bones basic. Expect, basically, some simple wooden benches. Not a ton of shade, and sometimes the engine is loud. I wore comfy clothes, so it helped a ton! It is a little bit better when you think of that breeze going across the water, the sights that are all around, so it is very gorgeous. Make sure, like your skin, can resist the sun!

Booking Tips and What to Look For

Booking James Bond Island Tour

Here’s basically some pointers, if you plan the trip of your own:

  • Pick a Small Group: This made the feel super personalized. It meant fewer peeps at each place, plus much more time for the guide. I also learned about a lot of things.
  • Check What’s Included: Make certain that park fees, plus your meal and any drinks, come with your total tour deal to keep any surprises in check.
  • Read Reviews: Find what the other people claim regarding their experiences. Looking at reviews gives you the real lowdown on the good, and potentially bad, pieces that folks encountered.
  • Time of Year: Weather means everything! Khao Lak goes to a calmer, more chill time somewhere around November to April, like the monsoon winds.

My Honest Recommendation

James Bond Island Recommendation

Did I love my little longtail boat adventure to Phang Nga Bay plus to James Bond Island? Definitely! Is that, like, for anyone? Hmm, likely not! Those longtail boats have that bit of a rustic feel to them that might bother people looking for the super luxe treatment. So I was wanting, like, to get up close to Thailand’s waters. So those boats just nail the thing! I would also say, too, that it’s totally worthwhile when you set the mind around it. Don’t forget sunblock! So that view gives you memories that just keep with you!
