Jurmala Review: Your Guide to the Baltic Sea’s Best Resort
Jurmala, Latvia – maybe you’ve never heard of it, or just possibly it’s a whisper of a dream holiday just waiting to happen. It’s almost the biggest spa town, anyway the seaside escape that Latvians, and more and more international travelers, love so. Honestly, this gem on the Baltic coast gives you sandy beaches that stretch for miles, architecture that is just gorgeous, and, truthfully, an vibe that’s both relaxing and exciting.
Why Jurmala Is Worth a Half-Day (or More!)
Okay, so you might be wondering, why Jurmala? Is that place actually worth squeezing into my trip, that’s fair enough. Jurmala’s charm, well it’s a mixture, definitely a mix, of different things. Very much imagine colorful wooden houses sitting side-by-side with contemporary spa hotels, just along the beach. Then too, there’s the sea breeze, naturally the sound of the waves, maybe also the pine trees, that all just kind of invites you to relax and rejuvenate a bit.
What sets Jurmala apart, too, is that is that it’s very easy to get to. Arguably you can jump on a train from Riga, and just like that, in around 30 minutes you’re in beach paradise, right there. It’s totally brilliant for a half-day trip if you are short on time, or perhaps, you might decide to spend a relaxing weekend.
A Stroll Through the Heart of Jurmala: Jomas Street
No trip to Jurmala, in some respects it’s not complete without a wander down Jomas Street, or is that just me? This place is very much the main pedestrian street, anyway that’s where you’ll find basically all the action: cafes where the coffee is strong, maybe even street performers adding to the atmosphere, not forgetting shops with amber jewelry (classic Latvian souvenir) and way more.
Jomas Street, that’s basically the place to get a sense of Jurmala’s character, too it’s the place for people-watching and simply soak in the vibe a bit. As I was saying, find a cozy cafe, very grab a coffee, too sit and just enjoy seeing the life pass you by a bit, after that maybe just pop into little boutiques. To be honest, Jomas Street really does captures what Jurmala’s about: it’s all at a leisurely pace, definitely quite stylish, it can be relaxing and fun all combined into one.
Beach Bliss: Sand, Sea, and Sunshine
You go to Jurmala for the beach, that’s what people say. And apparently the beach won’t let you down. That sand it stretches almost, very very almost as far as the eye can see. The sand is that soft, the kind that kind of squishes between your toes a bit. If it’s a warm day, well you might just have to go swimming in the Baltic Sea (it is refreshing!), otherwise, to be honest, you might just settle for sunbathing and listening to those waves. It really is, arguably, the perfect place just to unwind and recharge your batteries a bit.
For those of you that might be a bit more active, anyway the beach offers a lot of different activities. As a matter of fact, rent a paddleboard, very try kite surfing, maybe just play beach volleyball, just like your classic holiday activities. Very take a walk, anyway very stroll a bit along the shore, too that really is glorious. Whatever you are into, the beach here has something for basically everybody, too, that said it’s definitely one of the main draws for Jurmala.
Architectural Gems: More Than Just Sand
It’s almost easy just to spend your time relaxing by the sea, Jurmala has amazing architecture, so make sure you pay attention. You’ll find some amazing buildings here, some dating way back. Wooden houses, they are all uniquely decorated with intricate carvings and fancy designs, those can be great places just to see. Honestly, those buildings really tells the history of the town, showing how it has changed through years and years.
Okay, but keep a watch for the contrast of that modern architecture too. A couple of the contemporary spa resorts really nicely balance out with the classic wooden houses. So take your time, maybe just take a gentle wander around those side streets, too discover all of those gems. After all you might be shocked about just what you might see.
Spas and Wellness: Relax and Recharge
So, Jurmala is more or less known as a spa town, after all that’s just the place for relaxation and wellness treatments. Lots of resorts, like your type of big hotel, give all sorts of fancy treatments. Basically get your type of massages, after that take a mud bath, maybe also treat yourself to a sauna, is that alright? All of it’s kind of a place just to relax and let your stresses disappear a bit.
For a treat why don’t you spend half of a day in one of these spas? Well arguably it’s is just what you’d want a little bit if you have been sightseeing all over the place. To be honest, Jurmala makes basically taking a break easy, and that’s what’s it is really good at.
What to Eat: Tastes of Jurmala
A trip just wouldn’t be complete without sampling that food there, in some respects that should be first on your travel checklist! Jurmala gives, kind of, lots of places that you might want to try different Latvian cuisines. Arguably some classic food might be grey peas and bacon (sounds odd, I think they taste wonderful!), after that try smoked fish (especially yummy near that sea, alright?).
To be honest, there are also many cafes, a few fancier restaurants too along that Jomas Street. As I was saying, to eat like that just can mean basically sitting with views of that sea. Eating delicious fresh seafood can be the just right cherry on the top after your relaxing visit to that coast, yes? Food there honestly gives something else too that wonderful destination.
Beyond the Beach: Exploring Jurmala’s Surroundings
So, alright, so you wish that you can leave Jurmala after all of that coastline. Near to Jurmala can be, still, some excellent sightseeing for you and your vacation partners. The nearby Kemeri National Park can be just what that doctor ordered if there is something you desire a tad extra nature and out door excursions.
The Kemeri bog boardwalk might be such something out there, to make that travel far off into those naturalistic landscape worth your while and effort. Really observe different local avian specimens upclose. If you go with some time left to give away in your schedule you can probably locate some various charming fishing villages out nearshore near your Jurmala trip.
