Apparently, they once allowed royal women to peep at city life without being seen. Cool, right? Raju gave me some stories regarding its history, even though I really was busy capturing some photos.

Exploring the Iconic Sites: Amer Fort and City Palace

Next up was Amer Fort, a bit outside of the city center. This time we hopped out of the tuk-tuk to have an elephant transport us up the hill, you know, for a bit of traditional flair. This also comes with an extra fee. I really thought the fort itself was absolutely gorgeous, anyway. It is made from yellow and pink sandstone. The carvings were delicate. The views overlooking the town were stunning. I could have perhaps wandered around there for hours. So, I actually felt it was all worth it.

After Amer Fort, so it was time to head back toward the City Palace. Is that right? Located right in the heart of Jaipur, right, it’s where the royal family still lives. It has sprawling courtyards, museums, and some ridiculously opulent rooms, it has those. I really recall being particularly taken with the Peacock Gate, for example. The vibrant colors were so appealing to the eye. After wandering, Raju took me to some local markets where they haggled for spices, textiles and trinkets, and so forth. Now that took quite a bit of energy!

The Not-So-Glamorous Side: Traffic, Tourist Traps, and Tummy Troubles

Ok, so, it wouldn’t be an honest review if I glossed over the less idyllic bits, okay? So, here goes. The Jaipur traffic in certain circumstances can feel fairly aggressive, is that not the case? I mean, holding on for dear life as Raju expertly weaved through the chaos sort of became a defining feature of the tour. Not a bad thing, just slightly alarming from time to time. Anyway, those who get carsick are really urged to have something.

You’ll probably be presented with places for shopping that are all tourist traps, that I discovered. This is alright if you enjoy getting hassled to buy stuff you perhaps don’t need, anyway I just did not. I would rather have seen a small craft shop, but there it is. Another bit of ‘fun’ that some find alarming but other enjoy, might be called, “Delhi belly,” if you get my meaning? Being exposed to street foods. Be very careful with this! Perhaps it is advisable to bring something for upset stomachs.

Raju, My Tuk-Tuk Companion: A Blessing and a Curse

Raju, is that not the case, really, he was central to the experience, okay? Super friendly, super enthusiastic, really knowledgeable about Jaipur, yet he may, so, push a tiny to get you to shop at certain locations, really. He gets commissions on these places, you see, as is often the case. That gets to be a bit wearing after a while. Also, his driving style, shall we say, needed something more, but so he got me where I was headed safely and effectively, so too that is something.

One thing I did truly treasure was when Raju took me for chai to this hole-in-the-wall tea stand. Very great chai. Also, I think I probably appreciated sitting on plastic stools surrounded by locals swapping stories, more than the grand palaces, is that true? These were the genuine moments, so, it made me understand the culture much better.

Final Thoughts: Worth It?
