Have you considered ditching the typical tourist traps and really experiencing Colorado? Like, truly experiencing its wild side? Well, let’s just say that the “You Drive” Jeep tour up near Idaho Springs is definitely an option to think about. So, I recently took this tour, and really I’m happy to share my take on whether it lives up to the hype.

What to Expect: A Backcountry Blast

Okay, so what does the Jeep tour bring to the table? Well, first off, it’s not just a drive. We are talking about tackling some seriously rugged mountain trails yourself. I mean, the idea is that you’re in control of your own Jeep. With your friends. Sounds great, yeah? You get an experienced guide who leads the group, offering, I feel, both historical trivia and also navigation tips as you rumble along.

You should know, the terrain changes drastically as you ascend. I mean, in just a few hours you can see everything: think dense forests, really rocky inclines, and spots with some absolutely incredible panoramic views. It’s a really unique way to soak up the beauty of the Rockies, and that’s a plus if you appreciate diverse natural vistas, honestly. It seems like just about every turn provides another awesome photo opportunity, right? Anyway, the tour I selected went up to around 12,000 feet. Very close to the timberline, the weather will shift drastically, something to remember if you take this one!

The Jeeps themselves? Well, they seem perfectly up for the task. You are, it’s my opinion, provided with a late-model Wrangler – the sort that is suited for off-road adventuring. What’s great is they equip these vehicles with all the necessities: good tires, winches for those ‘oops’ moments, and some modified suspensions that seem perfect for absorbing the constant bumps along the trail.

Even though the Jeeps are really capable, you know, you’re gonna feel the bumps. I mean, this isn’t some smooth highway cruise, clearly. You’re likely climbing over rocks, splashing through puddles (depending on when you decide to go), and really earning those views at the summit. And, really, if you’ve never been off-roading before, there might be a very slight learning curve. That’s just something you should think about a little.

Is it Safe? Addressing the “You Drive” Factor

Okay, so, perhaps you are asking the obvious: “Is it safe to just let anyone drive these Jeeps?” Good question. Well, I’m very happy to report that the tour operators actually take safety seriously. And of course, they definitely provide a pre-trip briefing where they cover the basics. Like, stuff such as how to handle different terrains and general off-roading etiquette.

The guides, naturally, are experienced, so you get reassurance from knowing that they’re constantly keeping an eye on the group. Should someone encounter difficulties, or a little dicey patch, they’re right there to offer assistance. I saw firsthand on my tour that they actually guided one of the less experienced drivers through a pretty tricky spot on the trail, just calmly explaining what to do, and of course all went smoothly. It really is more than simply “You drive,” which, perhaps, you feel would be a recipe for something to go wrong!

And also, bear in mind, there’s a waiver. Naturally. If that is a consideration for you at all!

What To Bring: Be Prepared!

Are you gonna be properly prepared to enjoy this ride? Of course, that always makes a difference! Here are my recommendations:

Layers, layers, layers: The climate could shift quickly at altitude, or so it seems. Best, definitely, to have options, yeah?
Sunscreen: I think the sun seems a little more intense when you’re closer to it! You can get burned even on a cool day.
Sturdy shoes: Definitely leave your flip-flops in your lodging. Opt for some hiking boots or something durable with decent tread, is my recommendation.
Water and snacks: Keep yourself hydrated, and ward off the crankiness. And take into consideration that Idaho Springs does have lots of stores with supplies if you need to purchase just beforehand!
Camera: You are going to want to capture the awesome vistas, or so it seems!

Worth the Money? The Million-Dollar Question

Okay, so, is this Jeep tour really worth what it could cost? In my opinion, you definitely get something unique that you’re not gonna experience from behind the glass of a tour bus. I’d say that if you’re the type that appreciates adventure, likes really magnificent views, and are somewhat intrigued by the possibility of driving a Jeep on seriously challenging terrain, then yeah, I mean, this experience would resonate.

The “You Drive” aspect really does ratchet up the fun element, especially I think, if you go with a group of pals or your family, so you could consider doing that. I feel you need a basic spirit of wanting adventure. It’s probably less thrilling if you aren’t excited by that feeling, just to keep that in mind.

Basically, though, it delivers on that feeling of doing something really memorable in the Colorado wilderness.

Final Thoughts: My Recommendations

Go for it: In the opinion of me, if you are prepared to go a little out of your comfort zone, that is.
Choose a sunny day: The experience is massively improved with better visibility. I think you may well enjoy your adventure better, is the case!
Listen to your guide: They truly know the trail well, alright. And they know the vehicles too. Take heed!
