Ica Huacachina Sandboarding & Buggy Tour: Honest Review

Thinking about tearing through the Peruvian desert in a dune buggy and then shredding some sand on a board? Well, I took the “Ica Huacachina Sandboarding Buggy Pick Up From Hotel” tour, and, I should tell you, it was quite the experience! I’m talking heart-pounding drops, face full of sand, and some of the prettiest desert views you might see. I am going to run through my entire experience, what you could expect, and whether I think it’s truly something you should include when you plan your trip.

Booking and Hotel Pickup

Huacachina Hotel Pickup

So, the booking was honestly fairly straightforward. I booked my tour online, that is, through one of those travel websites. I chose the “Ica Huacachina Sandboarding Buggy Pick Up From Hotel” specifically to try to save time and make things easy. In fact, the pickup, basically, went without a hitch. They, you know, actually showed up at my hotel in Ica pretty much on time. That is something I definitely appreciated since things in South America can, you know, sometimes be a little flexible when it comes to schedules. The vehicle itself wasn’t super fancy, that is, just a standard van, but it got the job done. I, naturally, hopped in with a bunch of other excited travelers, and, like, off we went to Huacachina.

Huacachina is really something to see. I mean, picture this little oasis town tucked right into the middle of gigantic sand dunes. I guess it’s kind of surreal. The contrast between the green palms, the lagoon, and all that endless sand is kind of hard to properly explain. Once we arrived, we were, in effect, taken to the tour operator’s staging area where we got a little briefing about what to expect on the tour. Now, is that important? Well, pay attention, as they are, like, giving you some essential safety tips that might save you a tumble or two on those dunes.

The Buggy Ride: An Adrenaline Rush

Huacachina Buggy Ride

Okay, now to get to the fun bit – the dune buggy ride! You are, you know, piled into these souped-up buggies that look, frankly, like they are made just for tearing up the desert. Our driver seemed, to be honest, like a total pro. That is to say, he knew every single bump and curve of those dunes. Believe me, this isn’t some chill joyride. The experience is rather more like a rollercoaster. He drove up and down what seemed like vertical dunes. I mean, that’s with us screaming, laughing, and holding on for dear life.

Honestly, the views from the crests of the dunes were just absolutely gorgeous. I mean, I was able to get a good look at the seemingly endless sea of sand spreading in all directions. You will be thankful you brought sunglasses! All that sunlight reflecting off the dunes can, truthfully, get pretty intense. It’s pretty much also a great chance to snap some photos, that is, if you could hold your camera steady. Just to give you an idea, the ride lasts for about an hour, which feels, as a matter of fact, like the ideal amount of time to get your fill of thrills without feeling entirely beaten up.

Sandboarding Time

Huacachina Sandboarding

Once you are satisfied with going fast on the dunes, that is, it’s time for sandboarding. If you’ve never tried it, it’s rather like snowboarding, but on sand. You do receive a board. What they tell you is to wax the bottom to help you glide, that is, which everyone does. The truth? Some people stand up and do a good job going down, while others, truthfully, just sit or lie down. I really wanted to stand up, that is, but I ended up eating sand a couple of times before admitting that sitting down was, in fact, more my speed. Honestly, it’s pretty fun either way, and the stoke of speeding down a dune is still super real.

We hit probably around four or five different dunes, each with a slightly different slope and challenge. Some are really steep and fast. In contrast, others were more gentle. They give everyone time at each spot, and I’ll also point out that the guides were always around to offer pointers. That said, just be warned – you are probably going to get sand in places you didn’t know sand could get! It’s all part of the fun, I guess.

What to Bring and What to Expect

Things to bring sandboarding

I wanted to put a little something together about some things to consider if you book a similar experience.

  • Clothing: You could definitely want to wear light, comfortable clothing that you won’t mind getting sandy. Shorts and a t-shirt work well. A lot of people also bring sunglasses to protect their eyes from the sun and sand.
  • Footwear: Wear closed-toe shoes or sandals with straps, as you wouldn’t want your footwear flying off mid-dune.
  • Sunscreen and Hat: That desert sun is intense, so lather up with sunscreen and wear a hat to protect yourself.
  • Water: That’s pretty important! Bring plenty of water to stay hydrated. You will be surprised how quickly you will get thirsty.
  • Camera: Because those views are very something! Bring a camera or phone to capture the scenery, that is, but protect it from the sand.
  • Snacks: Well, if you get peckish. A granola bar or small snack is always good to have on hand.

As for what to anticipate, is that it’s going to be dusty, exhilarating, and just potentially a little wild. Know that the buggies can be bumpy. Also, listen to your guide, as they definitely know what they’re doing. Most importantly, just attempt to have fun. The entire point of this experience is letting go and experiencing something different, something truly, incredibly, remarkable. I think, if you are up for the ride, you’ll love it.
