Honest Review: Sigiriya & Dambulla Day Tour From Colombo

Sigiriya Rock Fortress

Alright, are you thinking about checking out Sigiriya and Dambulla from Colombo in just a day? Well, I recently did, and it was quite something, so I thought I’d share my experience, like your friendly neighborhood travel buddy. This tour promises a whole bunch of history and awesome sights all packed into a single day. Sounds intense, and honestly, it kind of is! You will need to steel your self a bit.

Early Start and the Drive

Colombo Street Early Morning

You see, the day begins super early, think before sunrise, with a pickup from your hotel in Colombo. Now, the drive itself is pretty long, clocking in at around 3-4 hours, depending on traffic. You pass by different small towns and loads of green scenery. The guide, a local, had heaps of stories to share about Sri Lanka, it’s history, and regular life, that really did make the drive pass a lot faster, so that was neat. That said, be ready for a substantial amount of time spent in the car, and it is quite something.

Sigiriya: Climbing the Lion Rock

Climbing Sigiriya Rock

Eventually, you will get to Sigiriya, sometimes called Lion Rock, this huge rock fortress thing from like centuries ago. The climb can be, actually, a bit of a challenge, particularly in the hot sun, so it’s quite important you bring water and put on sunscreen, because otherwise, you may not enjoy it too much. Along the way up, there are these old frescoes of celestial maidens. They’re very impressive and pretty fascinating. The view from the very top, I have to say, makes the entire climb worth every single step. It’s just stunning, like seeing the whole landscape laid out below you, it’s quite spectacular actually.

Dambulla Cave Temple: A Spiritual Stop

Dambulla Cave Temple Interior

Right after Sigiriya, the tour then heads over to the Dambulla Cave Temple. This place is, truly, very different, you see it’s made up of a collection of caves just filled with statues of Buddha and cool paintings. What’s actually quite amazing is the sheer number of statues and how old they really are; that’s an interesting thing. Getting around the temple does involve a bit more walking, though not as intense as Sigiriya, but it gives you a great insight into Sri Lanka’s culture and rich history. It tends to be busy though, with loads of tourists, but it is pretty cool.

Food and Refreshments

Sri Lankan Cuisine

Now, about lunch – the tour usually includes a stop at a local restaurant, and very often that meal provides a selection of Sri Lankan dishes, like your curries and rice. That is an actually great way to recharge after a very long morning of exploring. I found that the food gave a genuine taste of Sri Lanka. That said, depending on where your tour stops, that quality can vary. At the end of the day, ask your guide for recommendations, maybe.

Is This Tour Right for You? Considerations

Traveler Reflection

Look, this tour might be great, depending. First, the long travel times, these need accounting for. If car rides tend to bother you, it may not be the best use of a single day, it might be better to dedicate a couple days to doing it at a slower pace. Second, that climb up Sigiriya can be a real workout. Should you have any knee or mobility problems, seriously think about whether the view from the very top is worth that kind of challenge. That being said, if you’re very pressed for time and have good fitness, this tour is an actually great way to see a lot of very popular sights in Sri Lanka, but it will be intense.
