Ho Chi Minh City Private Tour: Skydeck View & Highlights – Review
If you are thinking about experiencing Ho Chi Minh City’s pulse and also soaking in some local experiences without the stress, then this private full-day tour, topped off with a visit to the Bitexco Skydeck, is maybe something for you. I wanted to share my experience, offering up some honest thoughts so, too, you can make a well-informed decision, just in case you are considering it for yourself.
First Impressions and a Friendly Face
The thing that made the experience quite good from the start was, arguably, the personal touch. Being picked up right from my hotel makes everything run smoother than anticipated. My guide, whose name was An, showed up right on time and he just had this friendly manner about him, that made you relax quickly. He actually wanted to know what I was after, what I wanted to see, that sort of thing. It’s almost like, instead of just following some routine, this experience would turn out more individual than I assumed. That, in itself, was a very positive start. His English was really very good too so communication was smooth and natural.
Revisiting History at the War Remnants Museum
An’s first recommendation? The War Remnants Museum, which, admittedly, I was slightly nervous about seeing. As a matter of fact, it is one of those places that sits heavily on your mind once you leave. The exhibits aren’t exactly easy viewing, they really do offer, very, a look into the impact that the Vietnam War had on the civilian population. It’s pretty affecting stuff. What made it bearable, and quite instructive actually, was An’s way of weaving personal stories in, he had plenty of them, adding some perspective that you just won’t get from the descriptions alone. The museum, although intense, gave me a much fuller idea of modern Vietnamese history, which I valued a lot. So An’s insights turned a potentially overwhelming visit into a very informative experience.
Contrasting Views at the Reunification Palace
After the intensity of the War Remnants Museum, visiting the Reunification Palace was maybe a good change of pace, offering a different point of view, as a matter of fact. That building just breathes history. So there I was, wandering around those big rooms where major decisions that changed the country were probably discussed and, well, made. It really did feel like going back in time. An explained things well, and told me about the Palace’s place in Saigon’s past. With his stories, An brought those events to life, so it was just slightly easier to imagine what happened there back in the day, rather than just walking around looking at things. It did make it way more involving.
A Spiritual Moment at Notre-Dame Cathedral and the Central Post Office
Then came a visit to Notre-Dame Cathedral and the Central Post Office, two locations that could be easily taken for granted, yet are very interesting in some ways. That Cathedral certainly provides a moment for quiet reflection amidst that hectic city, with An offering some details about its making, which added value to what you were experiencing. We then crossed to the Central Post Office where, honestly, I was stunned by the architecture. An recommended I send a postcard; maybe a slightly corny thing to do but still a pleasant memento. Both locations provided some photograph opportunities that I felt were quite striking.
Lunch Like a Local: A Culinary Adventure
The part of the tour that surprised me a bit, that too was An’s call. Forget those tourist places. I got led down some side streets so that I could discover where locals like to go for a bite. Of course I ate pho. It would be rude not to! So this tiny street-food stall was where we ended up, filled with workers. That pho was delicious; easily the best I had while in Vietnam and ridiculously affordable. Being shown how to add herbs and spices to taste, that also really changed the experience. In a way, it felt like I was not just eating; I was experiencing the culture in its element. A tasty and real experience.
Sky-High Views from Bitexco Financial Tower
Saving the Skydeck at the Bitexco Financial Tower until near the end was something An knew well, arguably. Arriving late in the afternoon, so I could enjoy daylight fading over Ho Chi Minh City was just superb. The view really is great up there; seeing the whole city opening up as the lights started to come on just made for an interesting experience. I found out quickly that this offers amazing picture opportunities so anyone keen on Instagram or similar should make sure their phone or camera is ready to go! To have such a spectacular, panoramic viewpoint just made the visit to the city very memorable, even if slightly touristy.
Is this tour suitable? Final Thoughts
So this full-day private tour including the Bitexco Skydeck has, arguably, a fair bit going for it, that is if you want some personal touch and local input. Having An tailor the tour to fit me just enhanced things a fair bit. If you want someone flexible, happy to go off script slightly, and who knows a good pho spot, this could be just what you are looking for. Sure, visiting Ho Chi Minh City on your own has value. I just think, maybe, that having someone like An really increased my grasp of the city.
