Hanoi 3-Day Ha Long Bay Cruise Review: Indochine Premium

Dreaming of seeing Ha Long Bay? Like, really seeing it? You know, not just snapping a quick picture from the shore? A 3-day cruise seems like a cool way to actually experience this spot, and I figured I would look into the Indochine Premium Luxury Cruise, so you can figure out if it’s something for your travel plans.

First Impressions and the Shuttle to Paradise Harbor

So, the whole thing kicks off in Hanoi. It seems almost everyone gets picked up right from their hotel in Hanoi’s Old Quarter, which is, of course, super convenient. The ride to Ha Long Bay is quite a long one – about 2.5 hours, give or take, yet the bus is very comfortable. When you arrive, it is almost exciting when you arrive at the port!

Anyway, upon hopping aboard the Indochine Premium, you’re greeted by a friendly staff with refreshing drinks; it’s actually a nice touch, that is, a warm welcome that instantly sets a great vibe for the trip. It is almost as if, I had to make special mention of Ms. Rose, our cruise manager; she had to have been the most enthusiastic and well-organized person, very ready to help with literally everything. You will, probably, meet her too!

Cabin Comfort and Onboard Amenities

The cabins, where you’ll be sleeping, are actually pretty fantastic. I mean, picture this: hardwood floors, big windows to watch the bay right from your bed, and just the right amount of space, very cozy. Most cabins, and arguably, all of them, come with their own private balconies, that really offer stunning views; you probably want to have a camera ready at all times.

Oh, and I almost forgot, that each cabin has a spacious ensuite bathroom. Hot showers after swimming in Ha Long Bay? Definitely needed! Also, the little things are definitely thought of too; you get toiletries, slippers, and a hairdryer. Almost like a floating hotel room!

But it is not only about the room, because the rest of the ship is really nice too. There are decks where you can lounge in the sun, an elegant dining room, and a bar where you can sip drinks at sunset; very beautiful! The décor is actually very charming; that’s thanks to the Indochine theme with Vietnamese touches here and there. You are very unlikely to be bored during any downtime between excursions.

Day 1: Exploring Sung Sot Cave and Titop Island

So, on day one, you visit Sung Sot Cave, it is called the Surprise Cave, and you probably should prepare for crowds; that tends to be quite normal. However, it’s really a remarkable cave. The sheer size of the place, with its different chambers filled with stalactites and stalagmites, it is truly breathtaking; I was truly surprised. Take your time, arguably, the visit requires it.

Afterwards, the cruise goes to Titop Island. Now, if you’re feeling energetic, it’s quite a climb to the top for the panoramic views. Like your Instagram will love it! It can, though, be quite a bit of a workout. So, if you’d rather chill, there is also a beach for swimming or just soaking up the sun. The water, arguably, feels lovely after a warm climb.

Day 2: Kayaking in the Lagoon and Squid Fishing

Day two is very unique, with some cooler activities! First up is kayaking; so, they take you to a really quiet lagoon, far away from the other boats. I was very excited because of the views around me! Gliding through the calm waters, squeezing through small caves, it is all very unforgettable. This bit alone made the cruise worthwhile!

Then, if you’re interested, you can try squid fishing at night. Now, I am going to be honest, I was absolutely hopeless, though some people on board were quite successful. It is, yet, a fun experience, even if you don’t catch anything; I did not mind.

Day 3: Tai Chi and Farewell Brunch

The final day starts pretty early with a Tai Chi session on the sundeck. Look, I am no pro, and frankly, am awful, though standing there, doing these moves as the sun comes up over the bay, there are few things that beat that. Try it; you actually may be surprised.

And before you head back to Hanoi, there’s a final brunch. I mean, you definitely won’t leave hungry! The food, of course, is delicious and there’s a great selection to pick from. So, a perfect way to wrap up the cruise.

Food and Drink: A Culinary Highlight

So, one thing I definitely have to comment about is the food. Each meal is, very, like really a feast! And, they offer a mix of Vietnamese dishes and international stuff, and it’s all really tasty. Think of, spring rolls, fresh seafood, soups, that is, everything is delicious and, arguably, beautifully presented.

You will, of course, also have drinks; the bar has a good selection of cocktails, wines, and beers. I did find, that drink prices were a bit on the high side; you might want to keep that in mind. But, there is something almost special about sipping a cocktail on the deck as the sun dips below those karsts.

Is the Indochine Premium Cruise Worth It?

So, the big question is whether you should do this cruise? Arguably, if you are trying to find that unforgettable experience in Ha Long Bay, that is almost certainly the thing you have to look into. Is it, basically, the most budget-friendly option? Perhaps, not, yet the value is undeniable when considering the package: good meals, great excursions and comfy, quite nice rooms.

I should mention that the staff also made the trip. They go really out of their way to make sure that you are happy and have what you need. So, if you’re planning to visit Ha Long Bay, I would definitely recommend this cruise; it is really worth considering!

Tips for Making the Most of Your Cruise

So, if you book this cruise, that is what you could keep in mind:

  • Pack layers: Weather on Ha Long Bay can sometimes be a bit strange, so take clothing for warm and cooler weather.
  • Bring sunscreen and a hat: When on deck or swimming, those rays really can get you!
  • Take bug spray: Especially if you are planning on doing the squid fishing, and similar stuff, when the lights are on it is inevitable.
  • Bring some cash: Even if things can get added to the final bill, that you have to pay in cash at the very end; drinks aren’t cheap either.
  • You may just want to chat with other people! I was by myself, but there were folks, and many couples, who really made me have a blast.
