Ha Giang Loop with H’Mong Ethnic Travel: An In-depth Review

If you are planning an adventure, doing the Ha Giang Loop in Vietnam is quite the experience, actually, especially with a group like H’Mong Ethnic Travel. Now, there’s a few outfits that offer similar packages, so selecting one can feel a bit overwhelming. But hold on! This review shares my experience with H’Mong Ethnic Travel’s 3-day, 2-night tour; it’s a look at what went well, and what, maybe, could have been even better.

Booking and Initial Impressions

H'Mong Ethnic Travel

First things first, booking the tour was, actually, pretty easy. Their website gave the info needed, so the process was easy. I sent them an email with some questions, and the team got back to me in no time. Their answers seemed both useful and quite clear, which I found, very helpful when deciding whether to book. Plus, it’s worth mentioning, that they offer different options, like doing a guided tour or, like, driving yourself if you know your way around. I decided on a guided tour – it seemed the smartest way to, really, experience the loop without the worry of, perhaps, getting lost or missing something cool. In that case, make sure that your passport is valid and bring necessary documents.

The Bikes and the Guides

motorbike tour Ha Giang

The bikes are, as expected, semi-automatic, but don’t expect anything too fancy, yet they are up to the task. Before hitting the road, the guide walked through the bike’s operations. Yet, if you’re a beginner, so this is worth pointing out, maybe request an automatic scooter – it might be a slightly smoother intro to the loop. In short, talking about the guide, mine was a great guy, yet, and as I was saying, his English wasn’t always very easy to understand, this could be difficult when, really, trying to grasp cultural stuff or info about the places we stopped at. This tour company usually have many young travellers, like your typical backpacker.

Day 1: Ha Giang to Yen Minh

Yen Minh Ha Giang

Day one, it’s almost like, it started out heading north from Ha Giang, with views that, actually, got cooler as we moved on. We passed by the Quan Ba Heaven Gate, a viewpoint that, apparently, offered a pretty sweeping look at the Twin Mountains. The ride to Yen Minh wound through small villages, so, it’s safe to say that I saw lots of rice terraces. Now, the thing is, that the homestay in Yen Minh was quite simple. So, that’s cool, as it felt more authentic, and that is to say the meals that were served there were, truly, delicious – a real taste of regional cuisine. Bear in mind, though, that hot water can be a bit hit or miss!

Day 2: Yen Minh to Dong Van

Dong Van Ha Giang

Day two was, like, easily the best part of the tour, honestly. The roads got both narrower and, frankly, more thrilling. We rode on the Ma Pi Leng Pass, and you know what, it really did live up to the hype – it felt like riding on top of the planet, you know? We also stopped at the H’Mong King’s Palace; yet, even though the palace itself was fascinating, learning some local historical context would have been amazing. The town of Dong Van, now that had, so, much more of a tourist vibe compared to Yen Minh, so keep in mind the homestay, although comfy, did feel less like an authentic cultural experience. Overall, the activities that you may find include mountain trekking, especially for people who enjoy sport activities. You could arguably compare this loop with Sapa. Now that you know this information, planning for this trip is easier.

Day 3: Dong Van to Ha Giang

return Ha Giang

The last day involved riding back to Ha Giang, seeing more views as we traveled. One standout was a visit to a local market, where, clearly, it was possible to purchase handmade goods and interact with locals. As a matter of fact, the drive, it’s worth mentioning, it got a bit long; so, after two days of riding, I was fairly ready to be back in Ha Giang, and get back to rest in a hotel. I have no idea about the total length in km, yet, the landscape was varied.

Food and Accommodation

Vietnam homestay

Speaking about the food; honestly, the meals offered in the homestays, those were quite good, mostly family-style Vietnamese dishes. And to be honest, plenty of food was always available after a day’s ride, especially when traveling with youngsters or children! What else can I say, it could be said that vegetarians might find options quite limited, though. So, it is probably wise to inform the travel group in advance about dietary restrictions. I felt the accommodations were somewhat simple, it’s fair to say, yet they were clean enough and decent enough for a short stay. The cultural exchange with the local families, it’s safe to say, this more than makes up for a few simple things.

Things That Could Be Better

improvements travel

Let’s talk about areas that, just a little, could use some improvements. Increasing the guide’s language skills would improve interactions. So, this should make it easier to gain local insights. Perhaps organizing things like clearer historical context at sites like the H’Mong King’s Palace could add way more value to the whole tour. If you do visit in Spring, it is probably a great idea to wear or bring a waterproof jacket. This is quite a popular location; be careful if riding by night as things may be a bit trickier due to decreased visability.

Overall Value

Travel value

Wrapping things up; the 3-day, 2-night Ha Giang Loop tour with H’Mong Ethnic Travel is generally, actually, pretty good value for the cost. So, you will see sights, cultural contact, plus a shot of adventure, you know? And while a few elements, they could maybe be enhanced, the adventure is worth doing, especially if you’re after an experience that balances culture and great views, if that is ok with you. I found this loop an excellent choice if wanting to travel to rural Vietnam.
