Oh, and don’t skip the Ethnographic Museum; I mean, it is in Enver Hoxha’s actual childhood home – it feels more personal, seeing how people actually lived back then. I’m saying, if you enjoy history with, too, some personality, Gjirokaster won’t disappoint.

The Mesmerizing Blue Eye (Syri i Kaltër)

Next up: the Blue Eye, or Syri i Kaltër, and get this – this place is practically magical. What it really is, is a freshwater spring. The crystal-clear, insanely blue water bubbles up from the earth, and I tell you, the colors have to be seen to be believed. There are shades of blue there that I did not know existed! The water is so see-through, it’s nearly as if you could dive straight into another dimension. It’s just a short walk through some forest to get there, so even that little wander has something of an enchanted, other-worldly vibe. I’m saying, it might be the perfect place to just sit for a bit and think, reflect or whatever it is you like doing in nature. Fair warning though, the water is crazy cold so, too, unless you are up for an arctic dip, you should probably just admire it from the bank.

Lunch with a View & Local Flavors

No trip is finished until you get to taste the place, right? These tours, too, know that. They normally take you to local restaurants where you can try proper Albanian cooking. That, of course, includes dishes such as “Tavë Kosi” (lamb baked with yogurt) or some grilled meats with local cheese and homemade bread, really just unbelievably yummy and super satisfying after all that walking around. Now, the really memorable part is that a lot of these restaurants have verandas or patios with valley views. What’s better than eating crazy delicious food while looking out over the Albanian countryside?

The Guide: More Than Just a Driver

What really made my trip special was the guide. You see, more than just pointing stuff out, he had lots of personal stories and background on all sorts of stuff, such as, Albanian culture and history that really added depth. So, too, because it was a private tour, I asked tons of questions, like very annoying amounts, and he had that incredible ability of taking them all in stride. It made the whole day much more engaging and left me with a way better feeling about Albania, so, too, he knew that I wanted some photos, like a crazy tourist, and he knew all the angles and viewpoints, very very helpful in not making me look like a fool!
