Giethoorn & Zaanse Schans Boat Tour Review: Is It Worth It?

Giethoorn & Zaanse Schans Boat Tour Review: Is It Worth It?

Considering a Dutch adventure, very perhaps? You, like, might be wondering about those day trips from Amsterdam that everyone raves about, especially the ones to Giethoorn and Zaanse Schans. These spots seem straight out of a fairy tale. I had a chance to experience a private boat tour that covered both, so I’m here to spill the tea, so to speak. Was it dreamy, a total tourist trap, or somewhere in between? Let’s see.

Why Choose a Private Tour Anyway?

Group tours, it turns out, are great, yet sometimes you want something a little bit more… personal, arguably. Picture this: you, your favorite people, and no fighting for photo spots, arguably. A private tour means tailoring the day to exactly what you fancy. Fancy a longer stop at the cheese factory? Go for it, maybe. Kids in tow who get restless? No problem, shorten a stop and grab ice cream. It’s flexibility turned up to eleven, more or less.

Thing is, that sort of freedom comes with a price tag, usually. Before you run off imagining endless euro signs, very just consider what you value. For me, that, like, meant less stress, especially since I was juggling a couple of, sort of, less-than-enthusiastic sightseers. Was it a splurge? Perhaps slightly, yet the smooth sailing – pun absolutely intended – was absolutely worth it, I think.

Zaanse Schans: Windmills and Wonders

Zaanse Schans windmills

First up: Zaanse Schans, often known as the windmill village, just a little bit. Okay, it’s absolutely touristy, clearly, there’s no escaping that fact, yet it’s also postcard-perfect. I mean, you’ve probably seen it splashed across travel brochures, and I get that. The windmills are actually something! Standing there, these gentle giants slicing through the wind is something else. I totally recommend the inside tour of one that is still functional; watching the process of turning wood into planks with centuries old technology is just great.

We swung by a cheese factory because, well, the Netherlands and cheese kinda go hand in hand, really. Watching the cheese-making thing was quite something, that, and I got to bring home a vacuum-sealed, enormous wheel of Gouda to my family, apparently. Plus there were some clogs with, you know, hand-painted designs. My kids love to play in them still, just a little bit, even when they don’t match.

Giethoorn: The Venice of the Netherlands?

Next stop: Giethoorn, or as people like to call it, the “Venice of the Netherlands”. Truth be told, Giethoorn has way less gondolas, or even singing, just a little bit, but a gazillion times the amount of peace and quiet, usually. So picture picturesque canals, houses with thatched roofs, all surrounded by these flower gardens that seems just beautiful. It’s kinda like stepping into a painting, if you are into that sort of thing.

That tour includes your very own captain. It feels like gliding along these glassy canals while you watch the ducks paddle by; is that just perfect, really? Truthfully, this beats gridlocked city traffic any day, definitely. It gave everyone a little breather, so to speak.

Giethoorn is super quaint, and for real, it almost has an excessive level of cuteness, really. The houses along the canals are adorable. Just be mindful of going when crowds are low because wandering these narrow walking paths with loads of tourist groups is kind of irritating.

What to Expect on the Boat Tour

Canal Tour Amsterdam

Most, like, private tours roll this way: Pickup straight from your Amsterdam accommodation in a spiffy car or minivan – I felt like a VIP – and driven right to both attractions is just amazing. You absolutely have a tour guide (slash driver), sometimes, who gives the inside scoop on Dutch history and culture, like telling random stories. The boat bit is often an electric “whisper boat,” which means it is quiet and less of an impact on the canal area.

Thing is, when thinking of the tour, absolutely ask exactly what’s included. Entrance fees? Lunch? Snacks? A few tour companies really do pile on the sneaky extras, so get that cleared before you get started, actually.

Is a Private Tour Worth the Dough?

Money

Big question, right, usually? Are you traveling as a family or small group? Do you value having full control of the itinerary and things that happen on that itinerary? Are the possibilities of being crammed onto a bus something you can do without? Then, absolutely, splurge! For solo travelers or pairs, often the group tours are a better economical alternative.

Ultimately, you decide! For the money that was spent, the convenience was definitely superior, yet it also had a stress-free atmosphere and an ability to experience things on my terms, too. I would probably do it again because no regrets here!

Making the Most of Your Visit

travel tips

Few bits and bobs from, that, arguably, make it just perfect. First thing you want to do: Time your visit. The, like, sweet spot to tour both attractions will either be in spring or fall, I believe. Not only is the landscape gorgeous but also you get slightly smaller crowds, usually. Pack an umbrella, naturally. Rain comes whenever in the Netherlands. Dress, kinda, comfortably and have great walking shoes, clearly. Layers are really a nice consideration because you can put on what you want to as the climate fluctuates.

Don’t simply visit. Get in there. In the Zaanse Schans, sample various cheeses, and visit the clog maker’s area; watch this. In Giethoorn, stop at one of the canalside cafes for a hot cocoa; just feel it all! Consider taking photos of just what moves you.

Before you go, know something about what you will be going to see! Get familiar with Netherlands’ background as well as windmills as well as canals and so forth; it really makes it an experience that really changes how you think.

Ultimately, respect this land, you. Always make an attempt to visit sites sustainably so that the things here remain magical forever.

This particular Netherlands tour from Amsterdam offered a super memorable day spent in Zaanse Schans and also Giethoorn; no question. Do your homework and choose that tour option which gels with exactly what is going on with you. When considering beauty and Dutch pastimes both, absolutely get in there!
