Full Review: Split Horse Riding & Quad Biking Day Trip
If you are after something a little bit different from the typical beach holiday thing when you are in Split, Croatia, well, then a full-day trip that combines horse riding and quad biking might be just the ticket. As I was saying, there are a bunch of operators offering similar deals, but this review is intended to provide a peek at what you might get from one particular version of the adventure. In some respects, think of this like two awesome half-day trips squished into one action-packed day, plus lunch!
What to Expect: A General Overview
Okay, so usually, the day kicks off with a pickup from a designated spot in Split. A mini-bus typically transports everyone, and, literally, the ride out to the countryside can take around an hour, depending, literally, on the traffic and, specifically, where the stables and quad biking location is. That said, you might want to buckle up, so to speak, since some of those rural roads can be a bit, or rather, bumpy! Upon arrival, there’s, of course, a briefing. In other words, the staff will chat about the day’s schedule and some pretty key safety information. A bit obvious, but it is worth paying attention, and very importantly, ask questions if you have them.
Afterward, it’s usually time to meet your horse. I mean, the horses tend to be well-trained and calm, often making them quite suitable for riders with some little experience. It is often the case that there is a guide leading the way, too it’s almost like ensuring a smooth and really very enjoyable experience. Now, the horse riding section tends to last somewhere in the ballpark of one to two hours, and yet, typically, winds through some picturesque landscapes. Basically, expect to see vineyards, olive groves, and quite beautiful stretches of Dalmatian countryside. Later on, after the horse riding part is over, there’s a break for lunch before starting the quad biking bit.
The Horse Riding Experience
A little different than a simple pony trek, this experience goes through pretty attractive terrain. The stables themselves are typically located in an area that allows immediate access to some superb trails. Of course, the horses are the stars, that are, very importantly, picked well for this sort of tourist activity. Very often they seem placid and rather well used to newbies, even if they have that “seen it all” glint in their eyes. Still, don’t let that fool you; that is, very obviously, listening to the guide is crucial.
I want to tell you, the ride usually goes through a mix of terrains, more or less offering something pretty different at every turn. So, there is the quiet tranquility of shaded woodland trails, sun-drenched openings offering amazing viewpoints and some old farm land too it’s almost like adding a layer of interest to the trek. One word to the wise; what is super obvious is to dress comfortably, arguably for riding and, basically, for the weather. Of course, that might sound a little unnecessary to say, but you want, potentially, to focus on enjoying the view and not being uncomfortably saddle sore or really super-sweaty. Most places will supply helmets. Still, just double-check when you book, that is, to know you are as safe as can be.
Quad Biking Adventure
Moving over to quad biking, well, the adrenaline level definitely ticks up a notch. Following, that is, a lunch break, you’re shown the quads, offered a quick briefing and some safety guidelines. And yet, wearing safety gear is very, very essential, so to speak, with helmets being utterly essential. Now, these quad bikes can vary; very, very obviously depending on the operator, more or less from smaller, rather tame machines, all the way through to bigger models. The route frequently mixes gravel tracks and more rugged terrain, obviously, like a different flavor compared with what the horse riding has. It can depend, very, very obviously, on weather and local access.
Very obviously, guidance is often provided and leads the convoy, with someone usually tailing behind too it’s almost like ensuring no one gets left behind. Usually, beginners tend to pick up the skills very quickly, but of course, if you are a total petrol head, that is, arguably, they’ll let you stretch those quads’ legs a little more, I would expect. So, basically, similar to the horse riding, the route showcases countryside charm, but very much at a slightly faster pace! This phase often lasts a similar duration to the morning session, that is, about one to two hours. Finally, after that you might be just a little exhausted, but quite fulfilled by the sounds of it!
Lunch and Refreshments
As I was saying, included in most tours is a lunch, providing a mid-day refuel point between both activities. Typically, this may not always be a five-star restaurant kind of dining. However, in general, it is a pretty solid, and literally, locally sourced affair. Often, you find grilled meats, a nice salad and a really delicious local bread, or something very similar, actually making it a pretty lovely break, as a matter of fact. That is often provided somewhere picturesque, that is, often at the stables or a little family farm.
And yet, water is usually offered, so, just check when you book about any specific dietary needs you have, very obviously, to check these can, in fact, be accommodated. Now, some participants would maybe advise to bring along some extra snacks, just in case! Of course, being active outside does tend to build up quite an appetite. Also, bearing in mind Croatia can, literally, get rather warm, you will want a water bottle to carry. As I was saying, little details like that can potentially transform the day, to be fair, making it far more pleasurable overall.
What to Bring and What to Wear
Okay, packing the right gear is actually super crucial to totally enjoy your day. Obviously, comfort and the weather are quite critical factors. Clothes wise, long trousers are literally often recommended for both activities. That is just for protection against the sun, scratches, etc. More or less, layering can also, obviously, be a good strategy. That’s very true since temperatures could, in fact, vary. Good, sturdy footwear is obviously key; that’s literally essential whether you’re in the saddle or on a quad bike. Trainers should be good; hiking boots are a pretty sound shout if you happen to have some.
What is really super crucial is sun protection, literally, a hat, and plenty of sunscreen. That goes a very, very long way towards just boosting the day! So, packing sunglasses is usually a pretty brilliant thought too. Taking some insect repellent might also, in fact, be a brilliant shout. Especially, of course, if you’re doing the tour during the summer season. Also, bear in mind that some tours may involve a swimming stop so packing swimwear, could be a brilliant thought.
Essential Tips for a Smooth Experience
As a matter of fact, planning is kinda key. Of course, what is often advised is booking in advance, especially, of course, in the peak season, that is, to literally ensure you secure a place. Confirm all the specific tour inclusions beforehand; often the pickup point, lunch arrangements, gear offered, and so on. You might also want to read reviews. In fact, listening to the thoughts and experiences that have come from other people tends to be just incredibly helpful. That’s why it is such a great idea, it is almost like, spotting anything negative but also highlighting just how incredible other people have found tours, actually.
Then, arrive early on the day, if nothing else, literally giving you some time to check in. Basically, use that opportunity to ask questions; get yourself familiarized, especially, of course, with safety guidelines. Basically, during the tour, really listen carefully to the guide. Literally, their advice does ensure safety, not to mention a really better experience overall, actually. So, embrace the moment, even when it might be just a little nerve-wracking; these sorts of experiences should, to be fair, create great holiday memories, or potentially funny stories if things go wrong!
The only real way you are going to experience horse riding and quad biking on vacation in Split is by getting outside your comfort zone; embrace any challenges, appreciate what you see, but also use common sense; by which I really mean be very careful; these could very much be activities you would very rarely do normally, and being safe and careful is almost always going to be the primary ingredient needed to turn good memories into unforgettable ones!
Is This Adventure Right for You?
Consider your fitness level, and to be honest the fitness level of anyone you intend traveling with! Some stamina is more or less required for both activities; if you hate physical work then maybe something different could be much better for you!
Bear in mind also how appropriate this is going to be for kids if you’re looking at a group adventure with family. In this situation consider also the skill level of riders for the horse riding and that all participants of the Quad bike rides are going to want to be careful when being adventurous with their travel plans. And remember travel insurance too it’s almost like being essential!
Key Pointers:
- Pack appropriately for varied weather conditions and outdoor activities.
