Alright, so let me tell you about this tour I took in Hokkaido, Japan. It’s almost like it covered two pretty awesome spots in just one day: the Sapporo Hokkaido Shrine and Atama Daibutsu. I thought it might be helpful to share my experience, just to give you kind of like an idea of what to expect. This review is all about like the actual vibe of the tour, some tips that I picked up, and some stuff that I definitely wish I knew beforehand. That way, your trip could be way smoother, maybe.

What to Expect on This Day Tour

Sapporo Hokkaido Shrine is like the first stop on this tour, so that’s where we kicked things off. You might find that the atmosphere there is pretty peaceful. What I remember very clearly is a vibe that mixed a touch of history with some nice, calm natural beauty. One should wander at random and see whatever comes out to be, so it adds some kind of charming, unique aspects of the shrine.

However, maybe it could also mean a lot more crowd than my visit! However if quiet, contemplating experiences are your stuff, maybe pick a regular weekday, in other words you can catch up with the stillness and history just as I had! So there are plus and cons!

Visiting Atama Daibutsu

Now, alright the Atama Daibutsu – the “Buddha’s Head” – it almost provides a completely different feel from the shrine! While Hokkaido Shrine whispers tales, this one, very gives you the spectacle!. Located in the Makomanai Takino Cemetery, yet you’ll feel transported because the setting is so, how do you say, original!. The approach makes you speechless.

And talking about the approach, walking, in some respects is passing through this long tunnel surrounded in some gentle rolling hill covered in lavender plants. And you can do that by following a path. The Buddha’s head it just suddenly emerges at the tunnel’s far end. The view is dramatic, it feels so magical! The contrast of purple flowers versus grey of the concrete makes some great pictures, that, like your Instagram profile will enjoy for sure!

It’s something, like I don’t know to say. You almost feel like on another planet for sure! And then you approach the statue closely, you just realize that this is a spiritual place. As a matter of fact the architect, Tadao Ando, wanted the lavender hill to kind of enhance the feeling of the Buddha’s peace.

Exploring the Buddha Head

Very striking is that unlike typical Buddha statues, is that just the head of the Atama Daibutsu it’s exposed!. The body is protected by the hill’s embrace, creating a great moment. It could be almost an invitation, it could be just anything but expect a spiritual moment anyway!

Let me describe it in some way. You find this peaceful expression with an amazing purple lavender background while light does their thing inside and all over the statue! This place really changes over the daytime! Very incredible if you are planning to stay a long time, at dusk for instance the area lights come out so that it will provide a very majestic appearance!

The entire site can bring about a feeling of serene and contemplation and is a real example about like, human touch can improve with an spiritual intention! If you walk, too it’s around, anyway you’ll see visitors lighting incense, also washing statues in coin and water spots and meditating. So really the people engage with this sacred place, anyway it feels more, so that that’s important.

Things to Know Before the Day Tour

I think it’s kind of nice to give you some quick heads-up, what do you think about?. First, what season to visit is maybe very very very key to everything because this plays a very important role into both sides!

If you go around Summer, or just when lavender it’s on full display anyway it brings that nice contrast that purple background against the stone. Of course expect more visitors in order to get that nice spot, that nice selfie or the contemplation time, what do I know.

You could also find very interesting when winter hits the scenery: the shrine and the Daibutsu, anyway transforms into pure snow, it is also pretty gorgeous for taking some photos too! This landscape is impressive but it needs the proper clothes since winter over there really really tests people a bit!

What You Wear, Matters

Also think about what kind of footwear you are going to wear anyway. Walking Hokkaido Shrine, the paths there tend to be mostly well maintained so go walk comfy shoes since you will find gravel surfaces. At Daibutsu I strongly recommend comfortable and sturdy ones anyway because paths are inclining, it’s a little more rugged, so you will feel way better anyway if you wear these.

Getting to these Places and Around

Basically, if you decide to tour the location on your own. The transportation to these locations can present some hiccups if you don’t know well the place, so you need to take care about what way to take since they are not in just one central place!

Usually tours take charge on going for all spots, and it brings more value to the tourist, or for yourself for instance. But anyway to Hokkaido Shrine for example, there is a subway and a short walk is how locals move. To reach Daibutsu on your own involves taking subway plus a bus from the station, which leads to complex changes if you are foreigner, seriously. Just for the access part, book it and that’s all.

Is This Trip Really Worth It?

To sum up, that, is that touring Sapporo Hokkaido Shrine and the Atama Daibutsu anyway you’ll have a mix of two locations: history and spirituality combined with aesthetic wonder!.
