Fuerteventura Snorkeling in La Lajita: A Detailed Review

Thinking about dipping your toes into the clear waters off Fuerteventura? That’s just fantastic! I mean, that place has an intriguing charm, right? The guided snorkeling tour in La Lajita with pickup might be just the thing for you if you fancy something really awesome and simple to arrange. I felt I needed to try it. In a way, it’s almost an escape from the everyday hustle, very, very refreshing, like a quick splash in cool water. But does it actually live up to the hype? Keep reading; I have the full lowdown.

First Impressions: Getting Picked Up and Geared Up

La Lajita Pickup

Alright, so it all kicked off with a pickup. A pickup is often the thing that either makes or breaks one of these trips, you know? Punctuality is really a must, that’s always how I look at these kind of experiences! Fortunately, they were pretty much on time, actually a tad early, even, which instantly put me at ease. You could say, that’s very confidence-building, in some respects. Then we piled into a van with a bunch of other excited snorkelers, and we all buzzed over to La Lajita. The drive? Pretty scenic. Very scenic, truly! It’s one of those drives where you actually bother looking out of the window. We drove through some of the island’s volcanic landscape, which is more or less a nice little intro to the adventure ahead.

Once we arrived, we got kitted out with all the gear, and that’s really the simple stuff: a wetsuit, mask, snorkel, and fins. Everything seemed reasonably cared for, a little old-looking maybe, nothing too special though, I suppose. You should just make certain you grab the right size, and check your mask fits, to be honest. Leaky masks can kill a good snorkel trip real fast! The guides walked us through the essentials – you know, how to breathe through the snorkel, how to defog your mask, and what not to touch underwater. So far, so good, it was almost the type of tutorial I wish I had paid more attention to in the past. I feel ready this time!

Into the Blue: The Snorkeling Experience

Snorkeling Experience

Alright, once we were geared up, that’s when the real fun started! Splashing into the Atlantic is always invigorating, even if it feels a little chilly at first. La Lajita is not really famed for the clearest waters on the island; I could tell, as I got in. You’re not going to mistake it for the Caribbean, for sure! I believe it felt visibility was alright, mind, certainly enough to see some cool stuff, in a way. We began sticking close to the rocky shoreline, slowly gliding along and peering into the underwater gardens.

So, the marine life? It’s okay, for sure, rather cool. Lots of small fish, that seemed curious enough. I did spot a few starfish clinging to rocks, which is always fun. In some respects, the volcanic rock formations themselves were just as impressive. The tour guides pointed out some interesting stuff. At least, I assume they were. Their signals weren’t always that easy to follow. I felt as if there should be an underwater megaphone or something similar. A few of them are actually pretty entertaining, when you give them a chance. On the whole, there’s lots to admire, you realize.

The whole experience goes for about an hour, I’d say, give or take, which felt like just enough. Enough to get a decent taste of what La Lajita’s underwater bits has to offer, anyway, not so long that you get cold and bored. I mean, the water does get a little chilly after a while. It might be nice if they offered hot drinks for when you come out. Just a thought!

The Good, the Bad, and the Snugly Wetsuit

Snorkeling Wetsuit

So, what’s great about this tour? Clearly, convenience. A pickup is truly super helpful. That is, if you’re staying somewhere away from the coast, for instance. The fact that all equipment is taken care of. Well, that takes a load off your mind. I always worry I’m forgetting something crucial. The guides also, basically, know the area well. So that is always pretty reassuring. The price? Seemed fair, actually good, very reasonable for what’s involved, particularly considering everything is supplied, in a way. Oh, and seeing the island from a new angle is, well, an added bonus.

As for the downsides? Right then, water clarity could be better, yet it’s certainly acceptable. Just be prepared that you’re unlikely to experience super-clear conditions, that’s my advice. I had the sense the provided equipment could do with a little updating, but hey, it worked, and I was in the ocean so I’m in no position to complain. Maybe more info could be provided during the actual snorkel, for instance! Hard to know, exactly, how that could work, when underwater though! Possibly laminated information cards? I don’t know! Finally, the wetsuits. I believe, they get a little snug, after a time! So be prepared to wiggle around a little bit.

La Lajita Itself: A Quiet Charm

La Lajita

La Lajita is a pretty spot, if you don’t know, very quiet. More or less, you would not confuse it with a tourist hub like Corralejo or Caleta de Fuste, is what I felt. It has a really chilled-out vibe, to be fair, and is also where you can see the Oasis Wildlife Fuerteventura zoo. You might spot an odd camel! I never did. What a pity! The black sand beach is truly quite unusual, actually it really contrasts beautifully with the bright blue of the sea, you know? After the snorkel, I went for a brief wander, for example. That way I took a moment to just soak in the peace. I suppose it could be something of a local secret, because there were hardly any tourists around at all!

If you’re kicking around for a while longer, stop and eat something! You’ll see quite a few waterfront restaurants, which is nice. Basically, it specializes in fresh seafood, and what I saw seemed actually pretty appealing! It adds to the feeling that you’re experiencing the authentic Fuerteventura. It’s basically that, is what it feels like, when all is said and done. Plus, you can enjoy those seaside vistas while refuelling. All in all, sounds great, actually!
