Epic 3-Day Desert Adventure: Marrakech to Fes Review

Okay, so you’re thinking about doing that three-day desert escapade from Marrakech all the way to Fes, is that right? Well, you, like, might have heard some things, maybe read a review or two, but perhaps you’re really trying to figure out if it lives up to the hype. In fact, I just did it, and, I’m going to lay out everything. I’m going to tell you about the awesome, really fantastic views, those a bit bumpy portions, and everything, well almost everything, in between.

Setting off from Marrakech: First Impressions

First off, that kick-off point is Marrakech, which is absolutely alive – it’s certainly this electric mix of sounds, and aromas, and all this hustle. It’s almost sensory overload in a way! Meeting up with the tour group felt kind of like the calm right before a storm. Everybody was, like, a little anxious, totally excited, not really knowing what was about to unfold. That initial drive is actually quite deceiving. The scenery begins, seeming rather regular, but clearly, very soon it shifts dramatically as you climb into the Atlas Mountains. Seriously, prepare yourself for switchbacks!

The transport matters, it’s also worth saying. I mean, that 4×4 became almost like our metal steed for three days straight. It ended up being surprisingly comfy, bearing in mind the rather rugged terrain we were tackling. Still, I would, you know, really suggest packing some motion sickness tablets if you are susceptible. Those mountain curves can be, well actually they are quite intense. And then too, maybe bring a travel pillow, you’re going to appreciate that on some those longer stretches.

High Atlas Mountains and Ait Benhaddou

Okay, so crossing the High Atlas Mountains is genuinely breathtaking; I think, that’s also what everybody says, too. We went over Tizi n’Tichka pass, and really that’s like standing on the rooftop. Well, almost the rooftop. of Morocco. The views seem, frankly, endless. Snow-covered peaks way off in the distance, Berber villages hugging the slopes, and, well almost everywhere, this dramatic play of light and shadow. Seriously, have that camera ready; the photo opportunities seemingly never end. Now, that altitude also is very important. The air feels noticeably thinner up there, so definitely pace yourself, when you’re wandering around, and you’ll probably need more water than normal.

The trip to Ait Benhaddou was certainly something, too. You might have spotted it, well apparently, in a ton of movies and TV series – things just like “Game of Thrones” and “Gladiator.” Exploring that old fortified city really seems like walking straight back into history. That climb up to that very top is a bit taxing, but that panoramic view you get from there? Definitely worth the puffing, honestly! Keep in mind those local vendors inside the Kasbah are pushy. Haggling is part of the whole experience. Try and take it in good humor.

Dades Valley and Todra Gorge: Natural Wonders

Day two kicked off with driving towards Dades Valley, and apparently the terrain transformed again. That shift from that High Atlas’s rocky slopes to those rose-tinted cliffs was remarkable. Now, Dades Valley is famous for those crazy rock formations, and that drive through the valley lets you actually appreciate them. Our guide also made sure to actually point out the bizarre shapes – “the monkey fingers” were a favorite among our group.

Okay, so Todra Gorge, with those towering cliffs, really offers this opportunity to actually stretch your legs and wander about. Seriously, I was a little stunned, and, actually, humbled to see those sheer rock faces towering above you. You will get local climbers tackling the rocks! It’s fascinating to watch, even if it just causes anxiety. Apparently, just a little further along from the main gorge is where the river runs, so really it’s possible to paddle about and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere, if the weather is friendly of course!

Merzouga and the Sahara Desert: A Dream Come True

And then came the moment everybody, perhaps, waits for. Driving to Merzouga. and I think it just meant the Sahara was imminent. It really does feel a little surreal when those dunes begin appearing right on the horizon. They just rise up in such contrast to everything around, in fact it feels you have stepped into a separate world. That camel ride to camp? Obviously pretty touristy. Nonetheless it really does provide an old world experience. Still, those camels are, honestly, not the comfiest rides! In that case, perhaps wear trousers rather than shorts in an effort to prevent chafing!

Okay, that desert camp, turns out, was far better than I, you know, really thought it would be. I mean, comfy tents, pretty tasty food, and all this Berber hospitality. The best portion? Lying back and actually looking at stars, very away from those lights. The sky just appeared infinite. It really is difficult to overstate how tranquil the Sahara tends to be, especially once many people have quietened down for the night.

Top Tip: Rise early in order to, like, view that sunrise over those dunes. That play of sunlight all over the sand as that sun comes up seriously will be engraved in memory.

Sunrise and the Road to Fes

The last dawn was, I would say magical. That gradual shift from that inky blackness into these fiery colors seriously had me rooted to that spot. And so it was kind of bitter-sweet saying goodbye to the desert and getting back on that 4×4. That drive to Fes shows a contrast to those views we enjoyed during the preceding days. I would say that the landscape is actually pretty barren to some stretches, although it just gives you time in order to reflect on everything you’ve gone through.

Ifrane, sometimes referred to as “Little Switzerland”, feels entirely out of place. Those manicured gardens and alpine-style houses appear totally incongruous in Morocco. It does provide this peculiar photo opportunity, regardless.

That end to that adventure is Fes is definitely just as hectic as that start in Marrakech. Make sure you, like, arrange transport onward from where the tour actually drops you. Or be prepared for loads of taxi drivers touting their services.

What to Pack for the Marrakech to Fes Desert Tour

Okay, so getting this packing right can affect your adventure considerably. Layers are extremely important, for real. The desert climate seriously has these huge temperature swings from day until night. During the day, loose, light-colored clothing provides sun protection. Still, as soon as that sun drops, you’ll need sweaters, maybe even a jacket. Now, sturdy walking boots/shoes are really a must for wandering around, maybe for any potential hiking. A scarf proves invaluable for protecting your face from those sand and sun.

Do not forget, that sun block, lip balm and, you know, those moisturizers, that desert air tends to be brutal upon your skin. Additionally bring any necessary medications; in addition to, think motion sickness tablets as previously stated. Some other items that, for me, were genuinely invaluable were a headlamp (great for navigating around that camp during night), portable charger (electricity availability has its limitations!), and perhaps some baby wipes or hand sanitizer for freshening up between showers. Finally, I will just state again, that you do take motion sickness tablets!

Things to consider Before booking

Okay, before you, like, fully commit to that trip, have a ponder about these things. Actually tour operators appear to differ a great deal, with regards to group size, that standard of accommodation and extras. Now, research multiple operators and really look at those reviews thoroughly. What exactly is included is something.
