Elafonisi Day Trip Review: Rethymno Sightseeing Tour
Planning that escape to Elafonisi from Rethymno and thinking of doing the whole day trip thing with all the sightseeing bits thrown in? Well, I gave it a try, and, to be honest, I am gonna share what I learned so you sort of know what’s what before you commit. Elafonisi is well known as the pink sand beach in Crete, Greece, so, really, everyone sort of wants to see it. This is, just a heads-up, my own take after spending a whole day doing this trip, with some hopefully useful thoughts about seeing the sights along the way.
Booking the Tour to Elafonisi
Looking at tour options, there seem to be lots of booths and places around Rethymno offering basically the same adventure: a full day kinda thing hitting Elafonisi, with some stop-offs to look at other stuff, too, it looks like. I wound up selecting one just a bit based on price and what appeared to be a reasonably comfy bus, since a big part of this adventure would, seemingly, be sitting on that said bus. That choice could be vital for the whole experience, alright? So, I’d say peek at those bus seats before you decide, really.
The Route and the Sights You’ll See
The drive, basically, gives you some peeks at Crete far from the beach. The bus rolled through small towns and past olive groves that look very, very old. Our guide shared some local history here and there, that, in a way, made the long bits of driving more than just sitting around waiting, like your usual tour guide, basically. I recall some cliff spot, I can’t say what it’s called, that gave some photo moments; yet, the timings could be rather quick, so get your phone camera ready.
I also got to swing by Agia Sofia Cave. Getting there involved a bit of a walk uphill, actually, yet the cave itself was fairly striking, is that the inside of it, anyway. Keep in mind the walk may test you somewhat in the summer heat. Plus, close to the cave there exists a taverna serving, seemingly, decent food. Food always being a great perk for any stop.
Elafonisi Beach: Pink Sand and Shallow Waters
Coming up to Elafonisi, it looks beautiful. The water, rather clear and shallow a fair distance out, I am pretty sure. Yes, you can see, almost, some pink in the sand, too, in certain spots which, supposedly, come from crushed shells. Still, it’s incredibly pretty. It does tend to get quite busy, especially sometime during peak times, that I am completely sure. So, locating that picture-perfect, isolated spot might, just might, take some work.
I ended up mostly wading and sunbathing, so your everyday beach time sort of situation. If you’re into taking photos, this beach really gives many different views depending just on where you stand. It’s mostly appropriate for families due to how shallow the water remains close to shore.
What to Bring and Consider for the Trip
For this full-day excursion, it helps rather greatly to plan. It’s pretty simple: Sunscreen is a must, of course, because that sun in Crete seems extra potent. Carrying a hat and sunglasses helps just a bit as well. A beach towel appears vital, and water shoes maybe are a fantastic thought should you intend to roam around the rocky sections.
It’s always nice keeping water and snacks on hand, as it could be some time between proper meal stops. And money, which will serve for the taverna or for buying treats, so yeah, keep some money close. Remembering that, depending just on the time, Elafonisi becomes rather packed. Going earlier or later could make for a much more stress-free experience.
Food and Drink on the Tour
The tour will stop you somewhere for food; actually, for me, this was near the Agia Sofia Cave. These tavernas frequently serve conventional Cretan fare which appears very tempting. Trying regional dishes turns your trip into, in some respects, a culinary experience, also. I indulged on some souvlaki and a local salad; still, basically, whatever you select should offer some sort of tasty fill-up.
The Verdict: Was the Day Trip Worth It?
Then again, so you’re asking, should you do this trip? Alright, if seeing Elafonisi exists high on your list and you don’t love renting cars, doing the Rethymno day tour appears like a solid plan. You get more than just the beach, plus those drives offer some sights of Crete which would generally go unseen. Getting ready for crowds is kinda vital, and packing needs thinking about, that I am totally certain. But, for something uncomplicated, the full day adventure probably is worthwhile for, you know, experiencing one of Crete’s celebrity beaches.
