Edinburgh Day Trip Review: South Queensferry & the Kelpies
Thinking about taking a day trip from Edinburgh to South Queensferry and the Kelpies? That is a very popular excursion. We decided to try it out for ourselves. This right here is a peek into what you might expect, the good parts, and possibly a couple of things that you should consider.
What You Might See on this Excursion
The usual tour hits some really notable spots. Arguably, it showcases Scotland’s past and maybe it shows what is to come. The Forth Bridge, a grand old railway bridge, is probably the first stop on this kind of tour. Then, there is South Queensferry, a cute town right on the water. Lastly, the Kelpies, that could be considered massive horse sculptures, are very much a must-see.
The Amazing Forth Bridge
The Forth Bridge, apparently built way back in the late 1800s, really is something to see. Actually, it shows just what people could create even without all of what we have now. This is also a railway bridge. Therefore, it might not be surprising when you catch a train speeding across. You, as well, may hear tales of just how many people worked on it, seemingly highlighting its spot in Scottish engineering. You know, it is painted in a color they apparently call “Forth Bridge Red”, basically to protect it from the weather, which makes for great photos. Like, the sheer size might leave you just a little bit in awe.
South Queensferry’s Appeal
South Queensferry could be called one of those spots. So it is where old meets new, but very charming. It does have buildings dating all the way back to the 17th century. The place gives you glimpses into Scottish history. So strolls along the harbor would provide pleasant views of the water, possibly seeing boats bobbing about. When hunger comes along, there are shops to visit. You might enjoy exploring its wee streets before heading to the next destination.
Experiencing The Kelpies
The Kelpies, well they are pretty hard to miss, that’s for sure! These thirty-meter-tall horse head sculptures are seemingly a tribute to Scotland’s horse-powered industrial past. Apparently designed by Andy Scott, they capture the folklore behind these mythical water spirits that can take on horse form. That is if the visitors get a chance to step inside (on some tours, anyway). They discover just how the sculptures’ inner steel workings look from the inside out. Furthermore, walks surrounding them give many vantage points to view the details from afar. Anyway, bring that camera; you will probably need it!
Deciding on a Trip: Some Points Worth Thinking About
Picking a tour needs some planning, so that, you know, it is not a waste of time or money. Here are several things that may affect your decisions:
- What exactly is included: Know what’s part of your excursion. Apparently, some include entry fees, and other tours make you pay as you go. What is that costing?
- How long will it all take? Excursions could take a bunch of hours. Consider whether or not this fits your day’s plan.
- What exactly is the guide like? Good guides can really make the experience shine. Do a little research into what the guide knows, how much passion they have, and, seemingly, how they present information.
The Upsides & Downsides
Every excursion has highs and lows. So that could be the experience here too.
Pros:
- Comfortable transportation: Getting to see a lot without personally needing to drive seems extremely useful.
- Knowledge from Guides: You might learn a thing or two because they know loads about the destinations’ history.
- Good time management: These trips do cram a great deal into each day, maximizing sightseeing time.
Cons:
- A Bit Rushed: Seeing three spots in just a day may be too rapid.
- Weather-Dependent: The weather can change things, especially if they expect you to walk outside, that is.
- General costs: When you add travel expenses, lunch costs, and any additional attraction fees, that adds up.
Did this Excursion Live Up to Expectations?
Going from Edinburgh towards South Queensferry together with the Kelpies is seemingly the kind of choice you should give thought. We got some pretty cool views as well as a small amount of Scottish culture. So we recommend considering it, assuming these destinations would fascinate the day tripper and everything balances nicely! Is it jam-packed? It seems as though these particular excursions typically go above and beyond!
