Da Nang Bana Hills Golden Bridge and Marble Mountains Trip: An Honest Review
Okay, so you’re thinking of checking out Da Nang, and likely, you’ve seen photos of the Golden Bridge and maybe those cool Marble Mountains. Well, I went there myself, and I thought I’d share the lowdown on what the experience is really like. Hopefully, this helps if you’re plotting out your Vietnam thing.
First Stop: Marble Mountains – A Walk Among the Caves
We started with the Marble Mountains. Now, it’s just a little bit touristy, that it is, but there is a pretty neat feel, if I’m being honest. Apparently, these aren’t massive peaks, but five limestone hills, each supposedly representing a different element. I guess that makes them very spiritual, right? You get to wander around caves filled with temples and shrines, and yeah, that’s just pretty impressive.
Be warned though, the climbing, actually, it’s very real. Those stairs, well they can get very, very steep and somewhat slippery, too, depending on when you go. You will want decent shoes; trust me on that one. And bring some water, clearly, because it can get to be a bit of a sweat bath. But, those viewpoints from the top? In short, well, they are amazing. You get a proper sweep of the coastline and Da Nang. Definitely makes you appreciate the area.
Is it crowded? So, sometimes it actually is, it seems. Especially if there is a tour bus that dumps folks off right when you show. Still, it’s usually easy enough to peel away from the pack and get a somewhat more peaceful spot. Give yourself about, I’d say, two to three hours here. That will probably give you enough time to explore a decent amount without totally rushing things.
Next Up: Ba Na Hills – Theme Park Meets Golden Bridge
Bana Hills, clearly, this is a totally different beast than the Marble Mountains. Basically, it’s a whole entertainment complex up in the mountains, reachable by one of the longest cable car rides; too it’s in the area. It starts like this, you go to a cable car station, then ride, and you emerge way above the ground into what amounts to a mountaintop amusement park.
Now, for a lot of folks, the Golden Bridge is basically what is calling to them. And it is kind of unreal, really. Two massive stone hands look as if they are literally holding up this gold-painted walkway that juts out from the mountainside. Very Instagrammable. Of course, it seems everyone knows it. Be equipped for crowds, as you won’t be alone getting your snaps.
Apart from the bridge, Bana Hills, you know, it feels pretty themed, very themed even. Think sort of a European village thing going on, full of shops, restaurants, and different rides. It can be a little much, admittedly, especially if what you hoped for was something very authentic Vietnamese. Yet, if you like parks, you may dig this aspect too it’s the way that Bana Hills is designed, and not just the Golden Bridge itself.
Rides, the Alpine Coaster, there really isn’t anything else that is super fun. It races around the mountainside and if I am being honest, I enjoyed it more than I’d guessed. Don’t expect heart-stopping thrills; more of a relaxed whiz that gives you a fun view.
Here is a little advice. Get to Bana Hills really as soon as it opens. So you do that so you beat many of the tour groups and can enjoy a slightly less chaotic experience at the Golden Bridge. A whole day may very well be plenty here; just depend on how intense you are with going on every ride or show that’s available. Just expect it to be very, very touristy though, right?
Food in Ba Na Hills – Plan Wisely
So food, if you like theme park chow, you won’t be missing anything special. Honestly, it isn’t a highlight. There really are countless spots selling pretty standard fare, nothing terrible but nothing genuinely memorable. Food isn’t very cheap, so you do get some sticker shock when compared to prices you may pay down in Da Nang proper.
Here’s an idea that might be very, very useful: bring snacks. Or if you wanted to pack a proper lunch and bring it up, go right ahead, you may want to. Then you do that and you can spend your money on something else that’s very unique.
Getting Around: Transport Tips
So transport, for the Marble Mountains, very easy to get a Grab car or taxi from Da Nang. The ride really is just a short one. Plenty of drivers all seem to know exactly where you’re talking about, which helps a lot. Haggle a little if you take a normal taxi; those things could get rather pricey when you could grab, or download Grab now and save.
Getting to Bana Hills might be a tad trickier. So lots of tour operators can get that arranged, but you can also hire a private car. Or another Grab/taxi; just be ready for a bit longer ride. Negotiate your fare first if you go with something aside from Grab; get ready to do so beforehand.
Is it Worth it? Final Thoughts
Alright, is it worth doing? If, you have time to only do so much, think this is a lot: the Marble Mountains are cool to see, especially for that culture kick and incredible views, also. Bana Hills and Golden Bridge can be somewhat crowded and are themed so keep that in mind. The views can be killer though and that Bridge is actually rather interesting, and is worth some snapshots.
If, so long as you brace yourself for tourist volume and manage your hopes with food and spend planning, each area really will offer interesting memory making and story telling, and may give you one thing to see back in the USA, or wherever your home lies. Enjoy planning this potential step on your route around Vietnam.
