Chichen Itza & Ek Balam Tour: Honest Review with Cenote & Lunch

Thinking about booking that Chichen Itza, Ek Balam thing, too with a lunch stop at Cenote Oxman? I get that it’s tempting, very with its promises of ancient wonders and refreshing swims. I went on one, I mean, and thought I should let you know the real deal, okay, the amazing parts and the stuff I think could have been better. If you want to get up close with Mayan history and cool off somewhere unforgettable, that maybe you might want to read on before you put down your money.

First Stop: The Majesty Of Chichen Itza

Chichen Itza with guide

Chichen Itza, that big Mayan city, is usually the first stop, you know? And let me tell you, seeing that main pyramid, El Castillo, in person? Pretty cool. It’s way bigger that I pictured, almost impressive, you see? The guide started telling the story of the place, full of stories about the Mayans and their gods. That’s something you probably would want to know beforehand, right? Like how they knew so much about stars and did some rather strange things with sacrifice. If you are the type who really likes history, you could get super into that. Now, something to be aware of is that it gets so crowded. You’re looking all around with lots of other sightseers doing the same thing. Finding a spot for pictures without lots of heads in them can take some patience, okay? The vendors are also there; they all want to sell you something, so you get a bit overwhelmed by it.

Also, keep in mind it is hot there. Like, very hot. Try to bring water and a hat. You can find some shade under a tree sometimes. Spending maybe a few hours here lets you get a taste, yeah?, but by the end, you’re probably wishing for that cold water.

Next Up: Ek Balam’s Hidden Charms

Ek Balam temple

After seeing Chichen Itza, next is Ek Balam, another spot, a bit less popular, okay? It’s a bit farther out, in a way. That keeps the massive number of tourists away. That means you are looking at something more peaceful. When you walk in and can really take everything in, it seems special, alright? Ek Balam has this one giant tomb called the Tomb of Ukit Kan Lek Tok’. Very special designs. The guide talked about them. Seeing them up close lets you picture the artists who carved all of this by hand so long ago. This spot let us climb the ruins too, and that got me excited! I thought that was interesting, almost rare these days, you know?

The view from the top lets you check out the jungle, seemingly spreading out forever. This is the place, in my mind, that really connected me with the past, too. So, after spending some time looking around and climbing, we headed off again.

The Refreshing Stop at Cenote Oxman

Cenote Oxman

With the day very hot, Cenote Oxman showed up in perfect time! Cenotes form when underground caves fill with water, yeah, and this one’s deep, with long vines dangling down. A thing that might relax you! I had to try swimming when I looked at it, just couldn’t help myself. The water was just cool and clear enough to make you calm, even something to remember later on! A great break to enjoy. There’s a rope swing for people that would like a splash, too. It may be tricky to climb, just an FYI, but very joyful! If you’re not so confident swimming in deep water, alright, maybe take a life vest from them; I remember seeing plenty. This felt really cool; something great after running around ruins.

Lunch: How Was The Food?

Yucatan lunch

Lunch comes with the tour. What was available seemed fair, nothing special. Some standard food, okay? I remember getting some chicken, rice, beans. Just enough, mostly, but if you’re a really picky eater, you should carry something you like, it’s probably what you would want. A part I liked, so, was how things were made from ingredients close by. This spot had fresh fruit juices too, which I liked a bunch because I love fresh stuff! Overall, the lunch served its purpose – it kept you going through everything planned for the tour.

Private Tour Perks & Things to Keep in Mind

Having a private tour for this trip gave an additional advantage in a way. We could move at whatever speed felt good, basically. Having just a few people really changed what was possible. Being able to spend a bit more time looking closer at a spot that might interest us. Ask every question under the sun without bothering a group of tourists. This choice can really change your vacation. Keep that in mind if you think booking. On the other hand, getting around might be really lengthy days. Early start times become necessary in order to bypass crowds and heat, yes?

Consider also, okay, you’re hopping in and out of vans quite a bit; a tour requires a few hours in the vehicle. Even though the sites? Really neat, remember how long of a trip they would make! Don’t just quickly book and expect something to happen without some thought first, please!
