Chiang Mai Evening Temple Tour: Wat Umong & Doi Suthep Review

Chiang Mai, Thailand, it’s often seen as a city kind of brimming with history and culture. Visiting the well-known temples in the area it’s just something everyone really should experience. I had the chance to go on an evening tour of Wat Umong and Doi Suthep, and I thought I would pass on a bit about my visit, sharing what I saw, learned, and felt during my time there. Getting to experience those age-old landmarks, it’s something that stuck with me long after.

A Glimpse into Wat Umong’s Ancient Tunnels

Wat Umong tunnel entrance

Wat Umong, well, it’s also sometimes known as the “Tunnel Temple,” and right away, you can see it’s different than all the others. The reason it’s unique is pretty interesting too, as that maze of tunnels is very cool to have a walk through, to meditate and think, just the way monks from ages past might have done. The site does offer such a sense of reflection, as well. It feels kind of calming, the place seems very peaceful, despite being very old, so that alone does give visitors something memorable. The surrounding woodland does add to this kind of spiritual feeling you pick up when you go to the temple.

When you head into those tunnels, so too, you just get this really strong feeling about the site. Very cool factoid: it was created in the 13th century! Walking around there kind of lets you step back in time and sort of think about everything that happened there back then. There’s also an important element of personal interpretation that this encourages in guests too it’s almost a sensory overload! The soft lighting and echoes really help you sort of lose yourself in thinking.

The main attraction is obviously, like I said, those tunnels. You can slowly walk down them and discover statues, altars, and a lot of small corners for some reflection. In the middle, you will notice this big chedi which is something, supposedly over 700 years old. Taking photos? Well, I believe you can, and people definitely do, but make certain you are quiet and respect the vibe of the place.

Things to consider for your visit

What do you wear to Wat Umong? Keep in mind you’re entering holy places, so like your knees and shoulders should be under wraps. Very easy to take care of that if you have like your basic sarong or scarf in your backpack.

Timing’s good to think about, also. When is best? Maybe you try going later in the afternoon or maybe the earlier morning, so you have that experience and it isn’t packed full of crowds. That way, that quiet mood you feel it almost stays throughout the tunnels.

If you’re trying to show respect to the place, consider contributing with a tiny bit of money when you are leaving. Many monks also tend to come and chill there so also keep quiet, too.

Ascending to Doi Suthep: A Temple in the Clouds

Doi Suthep temple view

From the quiet setting of Wat Umong to this grandeur found on Doi Suthep? Very incredible how things changed. So after a winding ride upwards (way, way upwards), finally reaching that well-known temple and its kind of perfect view, I felt completely ready. Now, just to clarify, “Doi” kind of simply means “mountain” in northern Thailand, meaning the temple is found smack-dab at the tippy-top of that mountain overlooking Chiang Mai.

As the story goes, the temple comes from the 14th century. Its story starts because this certain monk was carrying this chunk of bone that once belonged to the Lord Buddha himself, and that’s where it came from. After many prophecies, it finally arrived at this particular spot and was enshrined there for everybody. The fact is, every year a load of visitors end up traveling up those paths to show their own form of gratitude to what they represent. It gives that place such importance!

You reach Wat Phra That Doi Suthep (its full name) and are kind of presented with the choice of climbing that staircase which is snaked by Nagas (serpent-like figures). For those who aren’t great on stairs there is a cable tram that also goes straight up to the top. Up there that glitter you see right away that coats those monuments is eye-catching. The bell towers around there have this unique vibe. The shining gold pagoda dominates everything so too. Getting to look at all that, I began getting this understanding about how deeply that Thai community respected all their stuff.

Things to consider for your visit

The climb up Doi Suthep may be tiring. Going up, way up, expect quite the number of steps if you don’t select the cable car instead.

There’s the fact that this space gets busy. Best to come, or I should suggest visiting maybe in the early day or maybe try later. Then? The area around it tends to have fewer people which gives the location more beauty, too.

Always kind of keep covered if visiting there. Like they will expect when there you get to those sacred places and want the right levels of respect when showing that off.

Evening Illumination: A Magical Transformation

Doi Suthep illuminated night

Visiting those spots through daylight gives this different respect for everything compared with how that darkness does influence this scene. Visiting during evening meant, however, that I would have those very amazing times and opportunities, not that either is ‘best’. Lights on the temples make the temples glitter gold, too. The tunnels there, inside Wat Umong, also carry that kind of mood through its walkways and paths.

But Doi Suthep as the light fails does offer that perspective which takes you completely over. The sight itself allows the visitors those amazing looks as Chiang Mai does sprawl so down underneath. You might try staying and taking in everything as the skies begin being filled with stars for photos for all there too.

That darkness which creeps in gives you such quieter senses about what it might be when here too. Because there were slightly smaller groups of guests milling then around by that light and how little noises travelled round made for that chance that allowed reflection too.

The Guides and the Experience: Enhancing the Journey

Thai tour guide explaining

These tours are made better thanks to what that knowledgeable local tour provider has. His commentary brings such life to the place, like he almost adds even richer depths when discussing history or even the relevance there.

One can also get to learn by having those opportunities in discussion. They’re always up there and can also give a peek onto culture too while clearing off your uncertainty from those visits up that peak for some education there that doesn’t come any old way normally!

These translators aren’t just narrators. Very few have spoken with as much dedication, I mean these people give what that trip comes to mean some better definition since they help link those sights using insights from then till just today which gives tourists those much richer contexts when passing through them again by light etc.

Practical Tips for the Chiang Mai Evening Tour

Packing backpack travel

Making sure the tours work doesn’t take rocket science too but these points are important, which is knowing ahead means seeing those sights well happens. These small considerations are also needed regardless!

  • Book Ahead of time: Secure your spot, that is, by making certain one of them spots aren’t already stolen, then go booking.
  • What Clothing?: Do cover then since temple culture requires that a little here too.
  • Prepare a Bit: Get ready or that’s tiring if heading that mountain there with many levels here etc…
  • Think on those times: Early enough gives calmness. Late offers views in light at eventide hours and things aren’t as frantic always too here during either here if considered then beforehand as the tips advise about the times anyway above right…?

Having awareness helps bring amazing enjoyment without too many problems during whatever kind of tours and it will guarantee you’ll recall memories made over everything when those lights glimmer throughout which creates perfect trips everywhere, as all above can see…
