Meeting the Gentle Giants: Whale Shark Encounter in Oslob

Ok, so the first stop on our mega Cebu day? Oslob, it’s where you can actually swim with whale sharks, that really big kinda spotted fish. Actually, at first I wasn’t completely sure I wanted to go along with this whole experience, very simply just because of the ethical stuff that goes along with these animals in tourism. A lot of people kinda wonder, too, right? Is this harming these amazing creatures in any way? Very frankly, after researching different tour companies, I ended up finding a responsible operator that was focused on just minimizing stress on the whale sharks while keeping in mind that the environment is important, so I decided to hop in!

Whale Shark Swimming Experience

Honestly, you gotta wake up ridiculously early because the tours typically start up around 6 a.m., which, let me tell you, is like the middle of the night for those who prefer snoozing in! In any case, that crazy early start is really meant to beat the crowds and just to have better viewing conditions, I suppose. So, before hopping in the water, we did go through a briefing on the dos and don’ts: keep your distance, no touching (obviously!), and for Pete’s sake, don’t use flash photography; it kinda stresses out the animals, you see. In a way it felt a little bit like being told to walk on eggshells, yet, hey, you know it’s kinda crucial just to show some respect for those ocean fellas.

After jumping into the water, the initial feeling of coolness soon just gave way to total, utter awe. There you go, those giant whale sharks gliding so gracefully through the water. And just like that, those animals were massive, some as big as buses, practically! But, they appeared to be peaceful as they chowed down on tiny shrimp being tossed out by the local fishermen. To be sure, that moment where I was swimming along some big old whale shark is definitely etched in my brain forever. Pretty amazing!

Sumilon Island: A Slice of Paradise

Alright, so after that exciting interaction with the whale sharks, it was finally time for a totally slower pace as we were going over to Sumilon Island, only about a 15-minute boat ride coming from Oslob. This island, yeah it’s famous because of its sandbar which is as awesome as can be. You can kinda expect crystal-clear turquoise waters plus a whole blanket of some really fine white sand.

Sumilon Island Sandbar

Sumilon actually provides some nice activities, depending on what floats your boat, arguably. Actually, one can go snorkeling within that protected marine sanctuary and spy a whole bunch of colorful coral and sea creatures. Likewise, you can just go on a hike around the island; it gives you these scenic views coming from different vantage points. The sandbar? Yeah, that actually does change a bit based on what the tide’s doing, still, it’s typically an amazing spot just to unwind, grab some photos, and soak up the tropical vibes. Oh, and the other side? there’s some cool mangroves, too it’s almost like having just two separate ecosystems here!

Is that a day trip just sounds, well, hectic, and that’s okay too. Yeah, you can opt to spend just one night in Bluewater Sumilon Island Resort, I guess the only place to just be overnight, so that one can thoroughly relax and maximize every bit of the beauty surrounding you. Imagine waking up to the calming sounds of the sea and having easy, easy access to just explore all of Sumilon Island; really, that kind of stuff makes it really worthwhile to extend your visit!

Tumalog Falls: Mother Nature’s Masterpiece

Following all the chilling at Sumilon Island, so our last stop would be Tumalog Falls. It’s actually just about a 15 to 20-minute motorbike ride out coming from Oslob proper. The falls have become known, that is, for its horsetail-like streams of water that look like a veil from above. Just gorgeous. And the water? Super cool and incredibly inviting, specially right after just going around in the Cebu heat.

Tumalog Falls Cebu

Just so you know, coming from the drop-off point, the falls actually need a bit of walking coming down. No biggie though, so the pathway, arguably, can get quite slippery, particularly right after a rainfall, so yeah it would really make great sense just to wear comfortable shoes providing excellent grip, if that’s ok with you. Of course, should that walk down sound very blah for some people, you’re totally free to rent a motorbike to get down to the falls for something like 50 pesos, too it’s almost worth the convenience, honestly!

You may be wondering, Is swimming allowed? Yes! You can certainly just soak up some rays in those refreshing waters in the main pool below the falls. Because of how shallow things are generally, this can be super for anyone, too it’s almost easy just to move along through the rocky areas. When you look closely, yeah you will see tiny fish swimming all over, that actually do nibble at some dead skin, but, basically, it doesn’t really tickle all that much! Beyond the primary pool, a lot of travelers also have started trekking higher for just even more secluded areas, to go and have total immersion and serenity up in the wild.

I was thinking, how can i provide something beyond my travel diary of this area? So here are my additional points to ponder!

Extra Info and Tips

  • Best Time to Visit: When should you head out there? For fewer crowds, I really do kinda recommend scheduling your adventure anytime from Monday through Wednesday. The weather usually? I would say dry season is your best bet which stretches anywhere from December to May, offering you sunnier days so you can engage on the water activities plus great picture taking!
  • What to Bring: Of course your swimwear would be perfect, but also grab reef-safe sunscreen so as to just safeguard you against UV rays plus it’s gentle on the marine eco, too it’s almost awesome. Do wear some water shoes (I mentioned grip was crucial?) to have protection whenever just walking on slippery rocks. Obviously a camera would work! Make sure your cell has the battery completely full, a waterproof bag, and of course a towel is so great.
  • Tour Packages vs. DIY: Going DIY? Actually it’s really way easier on your budget. However, you still may need to arrange for separate transport options coming from one location heading off somewhere else. Taking packages is great for sheer convenience (everything will probably get included, so you don’t worry about so much planning), that, however, arguably can tend to cost you somewhat more. So depending how you wanna adventure? Be smart about things!
