Cartagena Tour Review: Popa Monument and San Felipe Castle

Okay, so you’re planning a trip to Cartagena, right? And you’ve, like, heard about the Popa Monument and the San Felipe Castle? Good. You, basically, can’t go to Cartagena without hitting these two places. I recently went on a tour that covered both, and, honestly, I wanted to share my thoughts. That said, you are getting an opinionated, human centered insight.

First Stop: Convento de la Popa – A View From Above

Alright, first up on our tour, it was the Convento de la Popa, that, in a way, sits high up on a hill. As I was saying, the views from up there, well, they are something else. I mean, seriously, you get this, basically, sprawling look at the entire city, that is, the colorful buildings, the ocean, basically everything. I have got to be honest; the drive up there can feel a bit bumpy, that, actually, adds to the sense of adventure, sort of. That is, once you get to the top, it’s like this serene little world. The monastery itself has, it might be, some historical charm, but for me, to be honest, it’s about that panoramic view that really, truly makes it worth the trip.

Actually, while I was walking around, just a little, taking in the sight, I, actually, thought about how wild it must have been for sailors, arguably, spotting this hilltop from the sea ages ago. That, actually, served as a marker for their arrival. And in some respects, that’s really cool, it really hits home.

But fair warning; it can get pretty crowded, that’s obviously something to keep in mind, so go early, that may get you less crowds, typically. And bring water because the sun, it could be, just beating down. Either way, don’t miss it – that viewpoint, actually, is killer.

Exploring Castillo San Felipe de Barajas – A Fortified History Lesson

Okay, that afternoon, after lunch, it was, the Castillo San Felipe de Barajas, right? Now, this, like, is a totally different experience. So, while La Popa is, actually, all about that broad view, San Felipe Castle takes you down deep into history. That, honestly, gives you more depth.

As a matter of fact, this fortress, it is that classic, imposing, and, by the way, it, actually, has serious presence. The sheer size is quite impressive, that you will realise when you stand at its base. As a matter of fact, the way it, sort of, looms over the landscape, really does give you a sense of the past, it is something you almost feel. Seriously, those walls have, well, they have seen a lot.

Basically, I explored the tunnels, alright? Then it, like, struck me just how ingenious these, basically, military engineers must have been back in the day. Just, like, crawling through those passages, I couldn’t help but wonder about all those soldiers, typically, that scurried about. It’s, you know, almost creepy in a way, but really fun!

Don’t skip getting a guide, really. Okay? They, basically, can make the history come alive. Obviously, you can wander around yourself, clearly, but, for instance, you will miss so much. The little stories and bits of info the tour guide share, honestly, it just, like, makes the place more fascinating. Basically, it all gets amplified, actually.

But yep, here is a warning; you have got to be prepared to do some walking, that will be unavoidable here. Moreover, you’ll find quite a few steps, and things, clearly, might get a bit hot, in some respects. Dress accordingly. Put on comfy shoes and bring water – repeat, you need water! But, yeah, absolutely check it out. I really feel like you almost step back in time there, a little bit.

The Tour Guides – Make or Break?

I think one of the biggest things about, for example, any tour, right, it tends to be the guide. It can really make it amazing, like so awesome. Otherwise, things get a bit, just a little, bland, in a way. Honestly, I have had tour guides that made me wanna snooze on the bus. Not good!

Luckily, for instance, my guide on this Cartagena adventure, like, was great. And stuff. First, this person was, sort of, super passionate, you will probably agree, obviously. I have noticed the level of their insight on, just a little, history and stories – it brought, like, everything to life. The, like, way that he knew just when to crack a joke, that definitely helped everyone enjoy it. At the end of the day, their expertise really, like, made the visit, definitely.

Basically, if you can, you may want to check out the guide beforehand, though, you have got to think that through. Read up, usually, on what people have said, too. These small steps will give you peace of mind, right. Asking about the guide when you, sort of, book – honestly, it can be, quite effective in some situations. It sounds kind of extreme. Actually, it’s, just a little, worth it to get the, like, best experience ever.

What Could Have Been Better?

Now, no tour is perfect, arguably, right? So, if I am being honest, a couple little, little bits could have been better. Very, very little niggles. First off, there was, like, quite a bit of waiting around between the two sites, too, you know? This isn’t ideal, right.

And stuff. And the lunch that, kind of, was included, right? It was fine. Very okay. Yet I was kind of expecting it to have that wow factor, in fact. In some respects, maybe highlighting the cuisine, a, little, tiny bit, so people see the real flavors? To be honest, a cooking class included in there, usually, is something worth paying extra for.

Basically, those things are not a huge deal. However, thinking of how the tour gets leveled up a, just a little, tiny, bit. That, maybe, might add just a splash of greatness on top.

Is the Cartagena Tour Worth It? (My Honest Opinion)

Right, that burning question: to take this tour, or, well, not? I tell you, completely: absolutely worth it, is what I would respond, I think. Even, though, with some super tiny stuff that I said. Like your immersion deep inside a crazy historic spot, and with super sweeping killer, killer views? It actually doesn’t get better than that.

Like, La Popa provides just that beautiful moment, in a way. Sort of. Okay, sure. Then San Felipe, in my humble opinion, takes you places way beyond a quick glance at walls, you might agree. Very truly. Seriously. Moreover, when your tour guide helps pump knowledge straight to your head (and heart) this, absolutely, helps put your vacation firmly into legend.

The thing that makes me recommend? Super definitely: the value of all that you pack in, too. These two very important places visited in a flash? That seems to take loads of the logistical, organizational parts on their behalf? Like your ease of enjoyment has just jumped up. Yes, obviously do it. It needs going through by you, literally. Definitely, definitely!
