Canggu 2 Hours Surf Class Review: Is it Worth it?
Bali, you know, it’s just not Bali without a surfboard tucked under your arm, or at least the *attempt* to get one tucked under your arm. Canggu, particularly, happens to be famous, actually almost famous, for its beaches and, more to the point, pretty decent waves for folks hoping to give surfing a try. If you’re thinking about spending a couple of hours learning to surf in Canggu, well, then maybe this is especially for you. I spent some time, that’s right a little time, taking a 2-hour surf class there, and here’s what I discovered, or what I thought, anyway.
What to expect from a 2-Hour Surf Class
Okay, so, very often these lessons tend to start with, honestly they start with, a quick introduction to the instructor and possibly the other people learning with you in the class. Then, too it’s usually a land lesson. This bit is fairly important. I mean, it’s seriously where you’ll learn the basics, such as how to stand up on the board, how to paddle efficiently, and, maybe it’s really basic, about surf safety in general. Instructors, certainly they demonstrate the proper techniques on land first, so it’s slightly clearer in the ocean. Most provide hands-on guidance, so that you aren’t completely lost, and they correct your form so, very much so, it will (eventually) avoid bad habits forming. A quick run through of the safety side is very beneficial, that is what i mean, to avoid being clobbered by a board or another person, for example.
Next up, really, is getting in the water! Instructors often choose beginner-friendly spots, that is, with smaller waves, so you aren’t overwhelmed as soon as you put a toe in. In the water, instructors usually stay close by, you understand, providing immediate feedback and assistance as you attempt to catch your first wave. In these 2 hours, don’t assume you’ll become Kelly Slater straight away, instead expect to spend most of the time getting comfortable with paddling, popping up, and, more often than not, just falling over. And then smiling a lot. Then getting back on your board again. Progress can be, it tends to be, fairly gradual but most folks do actually manage to stand up at least once, which really is the entire point.
The Instructor Experience in Canggu
What makes or breaks a surf lesson can actually be the instructor. You could say, arguably, they are that fairly pivotal point. You really want someone experienced, clearly, and patient, someone who knows how to handle beginners. Good instructors, they actually adjust their teaching approach, maybe to fit each person’s ability and learning style. That’s fairly valuable. The instructors there really had a deep understanding, I’d argue they actually have a deep understanding, of the local surf conditions too, very handy to know when conditions might change. The quality of instruction I found was extremely impressive actually; instructors very gave clear, concise directions and, too it’s important, were genuinely encouraging, even when, actually, especially when I repeatedly nose-dived into the water. They kept everyone motivated and, maybe even more importantly, safe.
Another helpful thing is their knowledge. Instructors provided helpful tips not just about the technical aspects of surfing but also about surf etiquette and being aware of other surfers. You kind of, that is to say kind of, learn a bit about the local culture, too. Asking them some questions can open up a conversation that can enrich the whole learning experience. They seem to, really they do seem to, create a really comfortable learning environment, where no question is a silly question. When the conditions weren’t helpful they explained, very much, what was happening and the reason why it was like that. I mean, to be fair, it just made me feel a bit more involved, rather than just trying to participate.
Location, Location, Location: Canggu Beaches
Canggu, in fact the entire area, really, boasts a number of surf spots which means some are suited more for beginners than others. The exact location that the surf school picks really plays a big part in your overall experience. Batu Bolong Beach happens to be very popular for lessons due to its, admittedly it’s known for its, gentle waves and sandy bottom, I’d go along with that. It can get, too it can get, fairly crowded, specifically during peak season, or maybe just on a normal afternoon actually. Another option is Echo Beach, though the waves, at times the waves, can just be slightly bigger here. Instructors choose locations, it seems locations, based on the day’s conditions, the class size and, basically, the experience level of participants, to, that’s right to, ensure safety and help with learning.
Spending a couple of hours in the water is, too it is, definitely a workout! Apart from actually attempting to surf, the views you understand make it completely worthwhile. After the lesson, too after the lesson, most places let you just hang out and enjoy the atmosphere, there’s no rush to just move on. Canggu’s beaches have various places where you can relax, have something to eat or something cool to drink. These are, honestly, fairly handy because you need something afterwards to recharge!
Value for Money
Surf lessons in Canggu tend to vary in price, yet, very they often include equipment rental, board, that sort of stuff and instruction. You should be looking around, you should I mean, for classes that include insurance. In general the cost seems to be fair. You’ve got an experienced instructor’s attention and all the essential kit.
The benefit really is fairly obvious, after a couple of hours you will learn the basics needed to be able to keep progressing, so, actually, the long-term value of getting the correct base techniques very early is a very good thing. It prevents actually forming bad habits right at the beginning and certainly gives you an advantage if you want to continue. Considering what’s on offer it’s almost an affordable starting point. Getting the chance really, seriously getting the chance, to stand up, even just for a short moment on a wave? Definitely a worthwhile, possibly an unforgettable, thing to do.
Final Thoughts and Recommendations
Is a 2-hour surf class in Canggu worth it? The answer, to me at least, really is a resounding yes, very much yes. I believe these lessons really cater for people just setting out to learn to surf, I believe that, and are really perfect for folks hoping to give surfing a try, just for the fun of it. The thing about quality instruction, a safe and really helpful learning environment, very often means you aren’t completely on your own. Even though I wasn’t, really wasn’t a natural, my instructor was just seriously supportive. The beaches in Canggu happen to be perfect spots for beginners and getting to experience surfing, at least for a little while, it’s very great.
For people who might think of doing one of these things I have to say look into exactly what you want from a surfing lesson, and be actually realistic about what to expect, very especially if you’ve not even looked at a board ever. Also check out what previous customers may have felt or thought by seeking reviews. And remember, have something cool to drink when you finish. You may very, very need it. Don’t, like honestly don’t, overlook what your goals are either. Actually enjoy the scenery too.
