Cancun ATV, Ziplines and Cenotes: A Wild Adventure Reviewed

So, you’re thinking about hitting up Cancun and experiencing something besides just the beaches and hotels, huh? Maybe you’re eyeing that combo deal everyone talks about – ATV riding, ziplining, and swimming in a cenote. A lot people do it. I recently gave it a shot. Here’s my take, getting down to what was seriously cool and what, might I add, needed some oomph.

Booking the Adventure: Things to Consider

booking Cancun tours

Alright, step one is figuring out where you want to book, and it really is more involved than you’d expect. I learned a lot about the world of online reviews and discounts. See, a load of sites offer this adventure. Some are the direct operators, then, you see these giants, that basically just gather a bunch of different tour options, and, they throw them all onto one page. In a way, picking felt like picking the right apple from a crate; you kind of hope you do not end up with the mushy one.

Anyway, after bouncing between a handful of comparison sites, and looking at direct booking sites, I checked out the review sections of each one, carefully. I noticed a trend too. The sites claiming insane discounts like “70% off!”? Very rarely, were those experiences showing the kind of review scores that would get anyone excited. They tend to feel…I don’t know… a bit suspicious. What I noticed too, is, when they had real low prices, the additional fees got you. Photos and even transportation sometimes isn’t covered and you find out you need to pay a bit more than originally thought.

Then, there’s the Goldilocks method, something that’s tried and tested: aim for something in the middle ground when talking about the price. You aren’t trying to break the bank, not when considering budget, but you probably don’t want the cheapest option, especially when the cheaper priced tours start hiding a bunch of extra costs when you are in the middle of doing them, or getting there. Also, read those reviews. Do the people talk about great experiences with the guides, and is the equipment getting taken care of well? Make the best choice that you can with what you got!

ATV Riding: Kicking Up Dust (and Maybe Some Regret?)

ATV riding in Cancun

Okay, let’s face it, the ATV portion, at first, that seems to be the big draw for heaps of people, myself included, admittedly! The thing is, the experience seriously varies wildly, so too it’s important to keep some realistic expectations. The tour I picked promised “thrilling” off-road trails. What I got? A slightly bumpy dirt road. Still it’s fun. Don’t let me undersell it too badly! You get the feel of wind in your hair and the sun, and all. Plus, it still a little exciting getting to go fast with a motor between your legs.

What determines the fun, a lot, is the actual ATV’s condition. The one I was using sounded, it sounded, and felt a bit like it had seen better decades! Yet, it managed to hold together through it all, no matter what, but boy it was obvious that others, had been feeling what I did when bouncing on it all that time.

Safety actually should come first, you might think? Make sure that you get a well fitting helmet! Some tours are just a bit careless, too, when thinking about safety. Really pay attention to the directions. Even though the road isn’t all that challenging it does matter to follow safety rules when dealing with the chance that other cars could show up out of nowhere. Basically you’re better off using some common sense to be aware and cautious. That, as a matter of fact, matters more when others on the tour don’t show any caution at all!

Another note that’s a good idea? Bring a dust mask or bandana. That’s important to note if you decide to come at a dryer time of the year. Otherwise, you’ll, you will, be eating dirt the whole way. That should keep it simple. Bring anything for your face because you really do need it.

Ziplining: A Brief Moment of Flight

ziplining Cancun

I was hoping that ziplining part could deliver a blast, and luckily enough, in my experience, it mostly did! The setup included a few different lines of different lengths and heights. In some respects this gives a taste of something, without getting crazy too quick.

This too hinges on having a competent and really trustworthy staff. The group running things took safety pretty importantly, double-checking harnesses and giving some simple instructions, and some encouragement before everyone stepped off the platforms. So very important, so too it’s a major boost in confidence if they actually look, you know, enjoy their work.

Still, even if done as safely as it gets, do keep some assumptions correct. These zip lines aren’t something extremely long. The views around you, though nice, also might be views of simple flat green brush as well as some trees instead of, like a view overlooking the sea.

Cenote Swim: Refreshing, but Crowded?

Cenote Swim Mexico

Swimming in a cenote is what really sells it, it’s the idea. These underground sinkholes were almost mystical and cool, offering that awesome break from all the heat.

What’s good to keep in mind too? The cenotes connected to these tours can be swarming with so many others doing tours, so don’t get ready for some time alone meditating to the sounds and scenery of the natural place. You could be getting some pictures for your socials, if you get some room to work, anyway!

Plus, make a note: that many locations will make you take a shower before hopping in to assist in keeping them clean-feeling. The water, it tends to be a bit on the cold side, that should give a blast during those hot afternoons, that said, still a bit chilly! But even though, the cenotes have some pretty cool vibes going around them.

What to Bring: Pro-Tips for an Awesome Day

Travel checklist

Alright, so, here is the list that is the most crucial:

  • Cash: You’re definitely going to need some spare change! As a matter of fact, there’s lockers and, there’s also the tips that you have to remember.
  • Swimsuit and towel: Not bringing this would be the most unfortunate thing you could end up doing! These are things to seriously remember
  • Sunscreen and bug repellent: The sun burns bad! and, when you aren’t fast, these bug bites sneak on up on you!
  • Water shoes: Something to put on the feet will actually prevent you from slipping while also feeling really more comfortable around the rocks when going around and exploring.
  • Camera: you, want to get all those clicks to look back on it. Very crucial. I mean, how are you going to flex on the timeline after it?

Final Thoughts: Is It Worth It?

Okay, so very quick version of my opinions on all this. You can do all the stuff together, you just should consider where to take the adventure so very cautiously and remember not to expect too much if you choose the cheapest route! As a matter of fact you’re most likely to get what you spent, so keep this at the top of your mind. With so much variance in what everyone offers, picking could seem almost random. As I said, pick the ones in the middle, research a bit.

Ultimately, what made it nice was being outside, that’s it! And when done right it will offer some chances to do some zip lining. I hope this helps plan your outing.
