First Impressions: Setting the Scene

Right, the day gets going, so we’re all piling into a comfortable vehicle. Typically, it’s a group thing, and maybe that can be quite an awesome way to meet new people while traveling. In any case, you’re driving out from Cali and heading towards the Valle del Cauca, and it just so happens to be like, you know, Colombia’s sugar cane country. Like you probably can’t even imagine the landscape – sprawling fields, those tall green stalks swaying a bit; it is very hypnotic in the breeze. The air definitely smells sweeter out here. The scenery itself, you see, that already tells part of the story.

Sugar Cane Farm: More Than Just Sweetness

Ok, so here’s the deal. Stopping at a sugar cane farm, arguably, it’s not just about seeing where sugar comes from; like, duh, right? We are talking about some serious historical context here. So many farms around these parts do, you see, still use a lot of older, more traditional methods for processing the cane. So in many respects it is just like stepping back in time. You learn a little, that in the past it was a really physically challenging job, like brutal. It is, in some respects, kind of astonishing to see how much things have, you know, changed… but stayed the same at the same time, or so I thought.

By the way, some of the tours go beyond the process, arguably diving into the plant-to-product thing and discussing the impact the sugar trade, specifically, had had on the whole region. Some visitors that go on the tours I saw, they definitely wanted to know if there were, maybe, some fair trade efforts going on, because they wanted their consciences to be clear when it came to participating as a consumer.

El Paraiso Hacienda: A Love Story Brought to Life

Next on the list is very much a highlight: El Paraiso Hacienda. It’s very, you know, like where the Colombian writer Jorge Isaacs lived. His romance novel “María” is somewhat famous, I guess. So in a way it makes visiting the place more interesting, right? This house, I gotta say, very charming – old furniture, antique stuff; just lots of atmosphere. So what you do is you kinda walk around the gardens and rooms. As a matter of fact, the guides like, will actually tell you stories from the book, while really giving you a sense of what life might have been like back in those times. A little heavy maybe. It’s interesting though when you’re, arguably, trying to think about how the book, so I thought, was viewed in terms of society at the time of release.

Tasting the Region: Food and Drink

Now, very important, if you’re checking this region out, so it’s not just, arguably, what you see; there is a very food element thing, of course! Arguably the tour makes, a good effort in helping you taste what’s, almost, like some typical food items from the region. As I was saying, it doesn’t matter, really, what farm you’re at or what part of Valle del Cauca you’re checking out. The tour will, often, treat people to local treats. They want visitors, really, experiencing things hands-on, you see, so people can fully connect with everything going on here. Just imagine, fresh juice made with local fruit. The snacks? They have pastries and, by the way, candies and stuff that makes your tastebuds, in a way, light up. By the way I found myself really remembering these bites much more than seeing the places alone! That makes sense, though, right? So when it came to food, and to be honest drink, it was an easy part of the tour to get involved in.

Why This Trip Stands Out

Look, arguably, lots of places in Colombia have nice scenery. What really makes this trip special, though, could be the way it blends nature, history, and culture together. Instead of just seeing sights, arguably you’re like learning a whole bunch. Very impactful, it is! I could go home and I’d probably try to think more carefully, that is if I’m being honest, about the impacts, maybe, a simple choice can make when I see where my foods comes from. Like very small personal footprint sort of thinking, it just made sense with my environmental ideals.
