Cairns Great Barrier Reef Snorkel & Dive Adventure: A Helpful Review

The Great Barrier Reef is truly a spot on so many people’s travel wishlists, and honestly, it’s with very good reason. I had this adventure myself just last year, and very, very, I am hoping that you’ll feel ready to jump right into the turquoise waters after reading this. You will get a better grasp of what it’s actually like, and of course you can make the right choice for your own reef expedition. So I’ll be going over the whole experience, from booking right through to getting back to land, and I am giving my honest thoughts all through that.

Choosing Your Reef Adventure in Cairns

Cairns Reef Tour Boats

Okay, picking your tour? It could be a lot to take in, seriously. You have boats going out to the outer reef, pontoons that seem like floating islands, smaller boats with super personal feels to them, and it’s that big variety to pick through. I’d always dreamt of going to the outer reef – which, is that it usually gives you water with better visibility and healthier coral. In a way, I decided on a tour that did both snorkeling and diving; but also gave me a day on a boat that was comfortable. And also there was very decent food. This very tour promised three different spots on the reef. Each place gave me something you know that was quite unique.

The Boat Trip Out

Basically, setting off from Cairns? That’s where the vibe actually started. Picture this, is that the sun is on your skin, there is that saltwater smell that’s very refreshing in the air. And so then there is the boat that’s filled with folks, everyone’s pretty excited. During the boat trip the crew really, literally shined; they provided safety briefings and it’s almost as if there was this really cool marine biologist that then had the interesting way of describing the reef and it’s super inhabitants, which I think helped build that anticipation, seriously.

Snorkeling: A Glimpse into the Underwater World

Snorkeling Great Barrier Reef

So now let’s get right into that snorkeling, alright? As soon as my face got into that water, then bam! Like your peepers are having a party that has kaleidoscope colors and shapes to it. Fish everywhere – big ones, small ones, some which were neon ones and some which seemed a little shy – there were brain corals with lots of personality, and so even giant clams that are kind of showing off with their mantle colors. That first location wasn’t too deep. It gave folks somewhere to just take it easy. Just get the hang of breathing through that snorkel thing, like your own introductory moment, in some respects.

The Scuba Experience: Going Deeper

Scuba Diving Great Barrier Reef

I did sign myself up to get a try dive! I will mention to you this now, in case you’re thinking ‘but I’ve never even’, and so this part? It gives those absolute newbies an intro. Of course after there was an overview that had some key safety stuff and a bit of time in the shallows with those very helpful instructors. I actually went under. A huge thrill, and even if it’s like you are simply hovering just beneath, then seeing the reef from that different perspective. Very wonderful.

Lunch on the Reef: Fueling Up

Lunch on a Boat

In between hitting those spots; this boat had lunch! They laid it out, very buffet style, so that everyone gets that bit of recharge time before getting to that next aquatic chapter of this trip. You know you get very hungry in that salt water; and so this bit really filled me up with things I actually needed – a mix of very fresh salads, hot dishes and just very basic stuff so I could then tackle some more swimming, okay?

Other Reef Locations & Activities

Other Reef Activities

We got moving! I think each different spot had different stuff to show off and to get really involved with. Like your second spot; this was deeper with this strong current. We saw so much more soft coral waving around that third one, or that’s where this massive clam action happened. It really did make sure the day went with excitement. This very operator I went with? They also made sure there was extra cool stuff to keep us entertained too, there were semi-submersible trips or viewing platforms; and in that way this entire day can entertain both folks wanting to be doing that active thing and people who are there just so that they can relax!

Creature Encounters

Reef Creatures Encounters

Well yeah, you just have to touch on seeing all those animals; since that made the trip. In a way; this highlight had that chill time I had; seeing sea turtles just doing their thing, parrotfish chomping noisily, or even these small clownfish. Basically there is Nemo. It’s honestly just unreal.

Things to Think About

Think About Snorkel Dive Adventure

I might suggest doing this trip. If you go and then think about these pointers; I reckon you will have memories to treasure. And it is vital, you actually bring your reef-safe sunscreen, seriously. This is the only sort of sunscreen allowed. Protect your skin. Think too; about maybe wearing a stinger suit or even that rash vest – particularly if your trip is during stinger season; just in case you know, with this added defense thing! Book things ahead of time if you want somewhere busy, then you need to be mindful. Bring money for little things; or little extras that you want to then pick up on board too.

In Summary

Alright, this snorkel and scuba tour to The Great Barrier Reef out from Cairns; this gave me a ton! And just really stacks up. This operation runs with this really capable crew who seem quite clued up; or even a great boat, also then of course it gave access into locations; or you will get a super satisfying time; regardless whether you are very happy just chilling right there at that surface with this mask, or really get down deep to the bottom! And even if things are quite pricey. Remember: the Reef has the real price. With awareness for all those ecosystems it homes; its something everyone could feel proud getting right amongst too.
