Cairns Great Barrier Reef: 3-Day Liveaboard Trip Review

So, you are dreaming of the Great Barrier Reef, is that right? I mean, who isn’t? It’s almost like one of those places you see on TV and think, “I gotta go there sometime.” And that’s exactly what I did, your like me I guess. This review covers my 3-day liveaboard trip from Cairns. I want to tell you all about it. We are talking about the good, the not-so-good, and just what to think about if you’re planning this trip yourself. It’s almost like I’m planning with you, just thinking it over. It’s an area that stretches over 2,300 kilometers, housing thousands of species. My plan is to unpack every detail so that you, too, get to see just what you need to make the most of it!

Choosing Your Liveaboard: Things to Think About

Liveaboard boat

Okay, so first things first, how do you actually pick a liveaboard? You know, like, there are lots out there, it’s almost like looking for the right pair of socks in the morning. Cost is clearly one thing you will consider. A little, actually, the really fancy ones, you know, the ones that almost look like floating hotels, are obviously pricier than the ones that feel, that could be, a little more like a hostel on water. We need to consider how much you would give to save the world in a week. Beyond cost, the really huge decider for me, it could be, the schedule. Is that a ton of diving, a relaxed pace with snorkeling mixed in, or is that a balance? That might be the trip for you, like your a regular jack-of-all-trades, master of none.

Also, consider this: just what level of diver are you? Some trips, for example, cater specifically to experienced divers, maybe they expect you to have a certain number of dives, as a matter of fact logged, while others tend to be, almost more newbie-friendly. This makes sense, naturally, to verify before you jump! Think, is that right for me or not? Also, your group needs to be considered. I want to bring all 13 of my kids, what type of boat should I look into booking, will it change during a school holiday vs. one thats out of holiday hours.

The other element of choosing your trip is the itinerary; basically, the dive sites it hits. Do they hit Millnke Reef? The Cod Hole, for the big potato cods, I think they call them? Or more remote ribbon reefs. Or any wrecks? Think hard, maybe look at maps, what do you really wanna see. Plus, naturally, always have a good look, almost, at the fine print of any liveaboard’s cancellation policy before booking anything. Plans do adjust, after all! This could change. I’d want to verify, this is often overlooked so it’s something that, like you, many will do and should verify.

Day 1: Setting Sail and First Dives

Scuba divers on a boat

The adventure, or I might mean journey, started, that, with a relatively early wake-up in Cairns. By the time I made it, very early, to the marina to meet the boat, my level of excitement felt just a little close to giddy! After stowing all my gear in my little cabin — let’s just say it was snug, and, I felt, adequate— we made it and, or might be, set out for the Outer Reef. The staff made us all familiar with the boat’s routine and safety measures. This sounds, too, a bit formal but I’m happy to be informed of emergency actions. By this time I feel it’s time to nap but let’s make sure we get familiar with procedures.

After reaching the first dive site, there were dive briefings which include what to see and some potential dangers, just like verifying it will all work alright. It felt more or less like, okay, time to go! Honestly, the first time, maybe it was the anticipation getting to me, or maybe just the stunning visibility. The fish life seemed pretty varied. We saw things that, for instance, smaller reef fish, so colorful as well. I spotted, what looks like, a turtle, that just swam right past like it did not have all the cares on earth. What, in short, you go out there to see. We returned later to do a night dive too; now that really felt like some alien experience.

Day 2: Exploring Different Dive Sites

Colorful coral reef

Day two it looks like really took us to a couple more sites, it looks like different than yesterday. I think, often, the crew picks these sites, it might be, that offer some variety. You have walls and drift dives along the way. Drift dives were one part that, to me, seemed a bit breathtaking; now you were just, naturally, swept along with the ocean’s flow like you’re flying.

One spot that, in particular, stuck out was a section brimming with a big bunch, quite really, of soft corals; these swayed in the current so prettily! You do want to take your camera to get some clicks for Insta there. Also, to me, a really special experience became during one of our dives whenever a group, pretty nearly six or seven, of those curious, as a matter of fact, dolphins came along just to check us out. Now, you feel like they may be checking your gear, or that could be they came to just observe our weird bubbles, actually! Things really came to feel incredibly unreal! After more diving we stopped on the boat deck to verify equipment. By that time the boat was packed tight.

Day 3: Final Dives and Heading Back

Marine life Great Barrier Reef

Alright, so comes Day 3, so this brings two dives, you see, before you come back to shore. You might, sometimes, feel it’s over soon after you reach this level, so you’re almost going at things slowly, but savor the moments. Usually you feel so much stronger here at this stage.

I believe I enjoyed it, so anyway the chance really was had on this day, I swear it, when that chance actually was to test out my buoyancy skills without end and take pics. As that final dive finished it hit all, too, a bit; this trip to some awesome locale really flew fast, as I was just explaining it to my partner earlier today. And that happens, you could be seeing it right after it occurs! After everyone packed and secured the gears, almost, we began that, to me, longish steam all that way to Cairns, you might be thinking with your trip. After that trip, maybe you wanna lay over. During that whole stretch, what all passengers shared that, what is really, that their experience actually meant all, so to get that input about everything will provide clarity!

Snorkeling vs. Scuba: Is it Worth the Extra Cost?

Snorkeling vs Scuba

Well, maybe you can, very much, be sitting here thinking,” Alright, so I’m sold around the reef thing, however is doing scuba actually, as a matter of fact, much worthwhile over snorkeling? Short response; usually! Honestly, whenever you snorkel, it limits a bit only exactly, as a matter of fact, how far down you could, pretty near, go only. Also you’re there at the surface. Usually some incredible sight is actually deep. You may miss some good pics.

Still snorkeling, as it seems actually, feels amazing in case one, like you, do have concerns as about learning that equipment usage of scuba and, or perhaps even have other health factors. Actually some actually vivid spots are now almost right at some level directly, like, off each area top actually. You just view more, of course you do when you dive deeper.

What it is also needs noting: Most trips do offer the option of scuba to actually a snorkel trip to boot; almost like two kinds into one location! You can view something deep as possible; so your wife can swim just there too! I believe either of each activity looks memorable within those area of The GBR really if, for one actually, that budget now stretches or whether health doesn’t feel risky when thinking “getting scuba”, what may happen still becomes well so all. You’re ready? Is, now I’d just find your solution!
