So, that time of year when Brooklyn comes alive with all sorts of energy is here, too it’s summer! I mean, it’s not just the sunshine or those longer days that make it something amazing. You see, it’s that whole vibe. People are out, things feel more relaxed, and, really, there’s just so much going on, and in a way, that’s pretty spectacular. I have walked these streets for years, and I am here to let you know that there’s plenty more to the borough than just what the postcards show. We can put aside all those tourist traps and discover what the real heart of Brooklyn has. Ready?

Soaking Up the Sun at Brooklyn Bridge Park

Well, first off, when you talk about Brooklyn and the summertime, you totally have to mention Brooklyn Bridge Park, that place really is something special. That’s because it isn’t just some patch of green, it’s that stunning backdrop of the Manhattan skyline that you get there. Like your very own postcard view! Take a relaxed stroll along the waterfront, maybe find a spot to just sit and watch the boats go by, it feels pretty therapeutic. Kids? This is also a win. The playgrounds are rather incredible; there are those pop-up pools, which are awesome for a dip on a hot day, arguably the perfect combination. I almost forgot to mention the Jane’s Carousel. Seriously, it is a classic ride with this old-school charm, tends to be ideal for kids and even anyone who is just young at heart. I typically go there to catch those sunsets—they can be something else!

Exploring Prospect Park: Brooklyn’s Backyard

Now, should you want an escape from that city buzz, Prospect Park might be exactly what you are after. So, designed by the same geniuses who gave us Central Park, Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, this park offers that serene getaway without you even having to leave Brooklyn. What could be better? Think lush meadows, those winding trails, that boathouse on the lake—it just has all the ingredients for spending a peaceful afternoon. Bring a picnic, spread a blanket, and take it all in. Sometimes they have concerts at the Bandshell, which is cool to check out. Also, that Brooklyn Botanic Garden is nearby. If you enjoy flowers and plants, it’s absolutely paradise.

Cultural Delights: Museums and More

Brooklyn has so much culture to offer. And believe it or not, it doesn’t get talked about enough. You really must spend time exploring those museums. The Brooklyn Museum, for one, very nearly has collections that could keep you occupied for days! As I was saying, it covers literally everything from ancient Egyptian artifacts to contemporary art, and that’s fairly interesting. Nearby is that Brooklyn Botanic Garden, I did mention this just now, well I wanted to emphasize its beauty! The Brooklyn Historical Society is also worth visiting. Anyway, they often host walking tours, which give you that amazing, more intimate look at some neighborhoods, as a matter of fact, you’ll find plenty of things that your average tourist would miss. The summer is often a great time, too, because you see lots of outdoor festivals and performances popping up. Always something to check out!

Feasting Through Brooklyn’s Diverse Food Scene

And speaking of heart, Brooklyn is really at the center of a delicious and incredibly varied food scene. The number of flavors packed into this area, seriously, it is amazing. Of course, everyone goes to Smorgasburg. I recommend visiting it at least once because it has such unique food vendors and interesting choices. Get there early. That place can be crazy busy. If you love pizza, there’s Grimaldi’s down by the waterfront. Yet, be ready for a bit of a line. However, there’s plenty more than just well-known spots. Neighborhoods such as Sunset Park or Borough Park have some wonderful, less crowded restaurants with genuine eats. Chinese dim sum, delicious tacos, yummy pastries; pretty much anything you could think of. Get out there, be a bit adventurous, arguably try anything new.

Catching a Flick Outdoors

Alright, you simply have to catch an outdoor movie at some stage. Now, sitting under the stars watching some movie—does summer get more wonderful? Very likely not. Different places around Brooklyn show them. Check for screenings at places like Brooklyn Bridge Park or perhaps even some rooftop bars. In a way it is a nice idea to grab a group of some friends, take something cold to drink, and enjoy this warm night. Oh, some venues have live music beforehand or food stalls. Make sure you turn up early. Claim a good spot. Take pleasure in it!

Enjoying a Breeze at Coney Island

When thinking of old-school summertime pleasures, the one place that really springs to my mind, is that, Coney Island! So, you are feeling those sea breezes. That iconic boardwalk to amble down. That sound of joy coming from Luna Park is so very unique. Hop on that Cyclone rollercoaster in order to gain an amazing adrenaline rush. The Wonder Wheel for these breathtaking scenes of those surroundings. The beach is always great to rest on, yet, it might become busy. Consider that hotdog at Nathan’s; it is pretty much a tradition. Coney Island isn’t fancy. Though it is all part of what makes it this traditional Brooklyn summer thing!

Bike Rides Across the Brooklyn Bridge

Anyway, want to be a little more active? Well, you could rent a bike and go for that ride over the Brooklyn Bridge. First off, you will have some wonderful scenes of the city. But remember that that bridge walkway will often get extremely packed. An early morning, perhaps even before any crowds appear, would make an enjoyable experience. You can connect your Brooklyn ride with various spots easily, that, like DUMBO, for those great pictures or a trip on down into the Brooklyn Heights for many scenic lookouts. Always a breeze is welcome in summer in New York City!
