Borobudur & Prambanan Tour: Is the Ramayana Ballet a Must-See?

Thinking of visiting Yogyakarta, Indonesia? You may be eyeing up the Borobudur and Prambanan temples, that’s almost certainly true. Plus, very maybe, you’re considering adding the Ramayana Ballet to the mix, right? That’s a pretty popular combo, you see. I thought I’d share a few insights from my visit. I mean, things I saw, what I did, plus, in general, if it’s all worth it for like your time and money.

The Wonder of Borobudur: A Sunrise Experience?

Borobudur Sunrise

Okay, so, first up, Borobudur. It’s this giant, ancient Buddhist temple, and wow, is it ever something! That is to say, built way back in the 9th century. It’s truly mind-blowing, this place. Very, very iconic! Getting there for sunrise is very, very popular. The view as the sun comes up, peeking over the volcano… breathtaking! But, a little tip? It’s often seriously crowded. So, it’s maybe a good idea to consider going a little later in the morning, probably a bit after sunrise. This way you still get awesome views, though maybe you will have, that is, without all the elbowing.

Is the climb worth it? Well, yes and no, to be honest. Climbing Borobudur, very slowly makes you appreciate its design a little more. Plus, seeing the intricate carvings and stupas, yeah that stuff is just phenomenal. But you may also have to weigh up the cost and crowds versus your travel style, I think, as some people like more space. Getting tickets can also, usually, be a bit tricky, mostly when attempting that online. I think booking in advance might save you stress later, like later that same day.

Prambanan’s Grandeur: A Hindu Temple Complex

Prambanan Temple

Next on the list, Prambanan. It’s not very far away at all. Also, a totally different vibe, it is. Very, very. This is a complex of Hindu temples, that are, arguably, equally spectacular in lots of ways. With those tall, slender structures, that sort of reach into the sky. So, apparently, they’re dedicated to Shiva, Vishnu, and Brahma. Just wow! What’s very different here? Maybe, less climbing than Borobudur, you might think, as you take more time to walk around and absorb the overall scale of these magnificent constructions.

Consider hiring a local guide when there, just a thought. I feel like the insights into the history and mythology really do make the visit a bit better, right? Stories really bring the stones to life. You might catch some school groups around, yet do not let that put you off, if you did like to be in places where things happen! Prambanan often, normally is, a much better place for people wanting to experience more about Indonesian culture.

Ramayana Ballet: Cultural Spectacle or Tourist Trap?

Ramayana Ballet

Right, let’s discuss the Ramayana Ballet, or, more or less, the big question! So, this thing is a show, in the open air. So, the graceful dances, striking costumes, all, very much, with Prambanan Temple very visible in the background. But very few seem to want to discuss whether the stage is very busy for such a grand set. Very likely this show tells the story of, guess what?, the Ramayana, I think. The ancient Sanskrit story, more or less. Anyway it features gods, demons, and brave heroes, that is something.

For me, this was a bit hit and miss, really. What I do think, anyway, the dancers are so skillful. The music, yeah that can draw you in! Yet, what if you don’t actually know the Ramayana story very well? I would do some background reading first, as that, very much, helps, really! Or, you know, simply make the whole thing more impactful to view, I think. Now, if you’re like very, very into dance or Indonesian culture, chances are you will completely adore this. Otherwise, for very, very casual viewers, just so you know, this can feel a bit long.

Tour Logistics: Making the Most of Your Time

Okay, now, what about getting between these spots, so I will say. What you can do is join an organized tour. This often can take away all the stress about taxis or driving yourself. Or, more or less, arrange a private driver for the day, and what that will mean for you, that is, maybe a bit more freedom. So, also make sure to wear comfortable shoes. What you want is lots of walking, often on uneven ground. In addition, I tend to keep the sun off my face. The sun can beat down pretty hard out there in Java, in practice. And take lots of water! This stuff is always pretty much key.

You may very, very want to also plan for the best time to go. In the dry season, it’s usually April to October. What you find then is that, clear skies are much better for viewing, in practice. More to the point? You want that iconic sunrise, I feel. Respect local customs when visiting religious sites, alright? I suggest dressing modestly and just being mindful of local traditions, like your grandma always said.

Final Thoughts: Is the Combo Worth the Hype?

So, is doing Borobudur, Prambanan, and the Ramayana Ballet very worth doing? Short answer: most of the time, but…it’s basically a bit individual, it is. Basically depends what you very value most of the time, really, when on the road. What if you love history and seeing great culture? Well then, consider that this triple whammy should usually blow you away, I would consider.

On the other hand, what if you’re not keen on crowds, possibly less interested in the performing arts or, possibly, on a very tight budget? In that situation, you might just get, in effect, very pickier about what you go and spend your hard earned cash on! Both Borobudur and Prambanan individually? Consider that they are both awesome sights. Basically the Ballet adds extra depth when it’s of great interest to you and what your idea of culture includes, really.
