Bohol’s Best: Chocolate Hills, Tiny Tarsiers, And a Wonderful River Experience – A Review
Okay, so you’re planning a trip to Bohol? That’s fantastic! It is, arguably, one of the loveliest islands in the Philippines. A trip often involves seeing the famed Chocolate Hills, trying to catch a peek at the super cute tarsiers, and kicking back on a boat while you coast down the Loboc River. This is a peek into my adventures touring around this area and some friendly pointers for your potential vacation!
Getting Up Close with the Chocolate Hills
Seeing the Chocolate Hills is very similar to looking at the images. These interesting geological formations really do look like giant mounds of chocolate during the dry season. This change in color is so lovely. Picture this: rolling hills stretching as far as you can glimpse, turning a lovely brown under the sun. They do get their unique moniker due to how they change as they dry! In the rainy months, that’s when the grass is super green, so it may not look very “chocolatey” at that time, really.
Now, the most common way to peep this natural attraction is from the main viewpoint in Carmen. Is that an awesome spot to drink in that awesome landscape? Totally! It may get very packed with tourists, that’s worth keeping in mind. Yet, the views still do not fail to disappoint! Arguably, there are other, less crowded spots, as I have come to discover through exploration. It might be very much worth asking your driver to explore other angles for these hills to sidestep the throng of people.
One cool thing I saw while at the Chocolate Hills lookout? Some local kids were selling handicrafts. These were, more or less, small Chocolate Hills made of clay. That was too neat to resist. Buying from them basically adds to the area’s economy. Plus, you get a memento! The viewing deck itself has that gift shop selling souvenirs, and you could easily find trinkets related to the famed natural wonders, so really it is worth investing some time to seek them out. Be sure, that too it is the kind way of paying your respects by helping locals who treat this land as part of themselves!
Meeting the Tiny Tarsiers
The tarsiers! These little creatures tend to be very iconic to Bohol. That’s one thing the area’s known for, like your picture perfect poster animal! Seeing them, that too is often a reason for visiting the island. Yet, arguably, there is something important that could be understood prior to seeing them, that’s treating them responsibly and seeing them only in sanctuaries which prioritize their protection.
When selecting your sanctuary, be sure to check if the place keeps the animals’ welfare front and center. Places just like the Philippine Tarsier Sanctuary in Corella often win high praise. The habitat is, in some respects, natural for tarsiers to minimize their stress, so this has a bigger impact than you would believe! Be mindful to not use flash photography, remain quiet, and keep your distance when watching these tiny primates. Basically, tarsiers tend to be very delicate creatures, and loud noises or flash could potentially distress them. If you want to have your photograph taken next to them, please keep a responsible distance.
Did you realize tarsiers were fully nocturnal? Usually, the tarsier can stay clinging to branches. They have such huge eyes in proportion to their bodies. Also, arguably, these primates are incredibly shy and may be sleepy at this point in the day, being a very subtle reminder that you should admire these tiny beings from afar.
Floating Down the Loboc River
Drifting on the Loboc River could be, perhaps, the very picture of a laid back, unwinding experience. The most standard deal has you get onboard one of the floating restaurants. It almost acts like a boat trip and buffet. It is not bad if you just plan to chill out for some time.
You will discover yourself being spoiled by the landscapes. Arguably, dense vegetation lines the river banks. Local kids are often happy to wave at boaters as they’re cruising through! That adds a specific welcoming vibe. The food tends to be usually Filipino cuisine; therefore, expect grilled seafood, chicken, pork, veggies, and more. It’s almost designed with that casual diner in mind, so be ready to experience them!
Sometimes, your cruise boat might pull over on the riverbank where there’s that stage for local performers! Usually, you are treated to cultural dance numbers plus local songs from local talents. The visitors would surely applaud enthusiastically while giving donations freely! That tends to be such a good way to have entertainment on the river while potentially helping artists from the region.
Maximizing Your Bohol Trip
Planning may go far. First, consider the time of year, so that you understand what you might expect from nature! Bohol is often at its driest from December to May, which really makes it very perfect should you decide to view those Chocolate Hills when they’re very brown. Yet, bear in mind this is really peak tourist time; therefore, assume crowds and probably premium costs.
Finding trustworthy transport really helps a lot, basically. Renting a car has its advantages, yet, employing a local driver can give those little local insider’s knowledge! Locals might assist with the little holes in the wall from Bohol which visitors might like your favorite dishes at. That in itself adds an authentic layer, very much to that of your travels!
Do respect nature and traditions while traveling! When observing tarsiers, that, too, involves acting like a thoughtful guest. In those communities, shop local and consider sustainability as you help keep that place’s wonders. By basically appreciating, you could protect that region. If people are willing to do that, there is often a strong bond connecting one another that visitors may gain from that particular encounter.
So, my adventure into the Chocolate Hills, Tarsier Sanctuary, and the cruise was rather more worth every peso invested to feel such happiness. This area has the charm from just a chocolate mountain which extends even further through nature to that kindness people convey, often. It is a region for everyone, so your adventure waits!
- The Chocolate Hills: Viewing these natural geologic wonders could be, that is, a visual reward on your adventures.
- The Tarsiers: That could be such a lovely feeling to see them personally; ensure it is with a trustworthy location for sanctuaries!
- River Experience: Having meals on a floating eatery brings a distinctive flair that just screams unwind, with culture mixed right inside, basically.
- Sustainability and Respect: This tends to be vital, for respecting wildlife or those neighborhood cultures to enhance the experience as much!
Enjoy your visit! It would create a memorable experience you would not actually forget, really.
