Bali Nusa Penida Tour: Review of Snorkeling & Land Highlights

So, Nusa Penida! It’s almost become that destination you just can’t skip if you’re in Bali, right? Many people are talking about it, plus I just had to experience its striking views and vibrant underwater scene for myself. Very recently I did the “Bali Nusa Penida Highlight Snorkeling and Land Tour,” and in a way, I wanted to share my thoughts, along with tips that should make your trip planning just a bit easier. My hopes are that after reading this, you’ll have a great feel for what the tour involves and whether or not it lines up with your travel desires!

Booking and What to Expect

Nusa Penida booking

Very many operators provide this tour, very likely from smaller local companies right up to bigger names in Bali tourism. Basically, I used an online platform, more or less because I like reading reviews before I make up my mind. What struck me was that the tour, typically, is a full day, and usually it includes hotel pickup in Bali, a fast boat to Nusa Penida, snorkeling at a couple of different spots, a trip to at least a few iconic land spots, plus lunch. Actually, read the fine print! Some tours might or might not include entrance fees to some places, and very sometimes drinks aren’t covered.

Still, the price seemed just right, a bit higher priced for more inclusive deals and possibly cheaper if things like lunch are at your own expense. Anyway, communication after booking was mostly quite quick. I did get a voucher straight away, plus a confirmation of the pickup time the day before the tour, you know?

Snorkeling: Crystal Clear Waters and Marine Life

Nusa Penida snorkeling

Frankly, the snorkeling was something else. After reaching Nusa Penida, we moved to a smaller boat specifically for snorkeling. Now, the water? Clearly, it’s some of the bluest I’ve laid my eyes on! The first spot, very often Manta Bay, is that place that guarantees manta ray sightings – which is extremely amazing. We did spot some of these fantastic creatures, very gracefully gliding in the water. Sadly, visibility wasn’t the very best that day, arguably, it’s nature, still, being near those giants was that awesome thing.

Arguably, the second snorkeling spot was better in some respects. The coral appeared healthy, the fish were incredibly plentiful and brightly colored. That said, the current could be really quite strong. But generally the guides were so helpful, making sure everyone felt safe and got to glimpse all of the sea life that was really so incredible! Oh, it’s almost that you get water, towels and the gear provided, more or less depending on your chosen vendor.

Land Tour: Iconic Viewpoints and Natural Wonders

Nusa Penida viewpoint

Typically, the land tour on Nusa Penida includes stops at really popular spots, usually Kelingking Beach (that T-Rex shaped cliff!), Angel’s Billabong, plus Broken Beach. Kelingking is truly stunning, the vista point provides that breathtaking view you’ve observed in all the photos. The drop is really quite sheer, that being the case you do want to watch your step. Plus the track down to the beach is very, very steep – only to be attempted if you’re really that sure-footed, okay?

Angel’s Billabong is very unique, more or less an infinity pool near the ocean. Arguably, it is something to see, actually do listen to the guide about safe places to stand. Waves can and probably do crash over, is that not right? Broken Beach, rather, is known for the arched rock formation over the water. It provides wonderful photo opportunities and tends to be picturesque.

Food and Drink: What to Expect

Nusa Penida lunch

Normally, lunch is part of the tour package. Typically, it’s served at a nearby restaurant. Most of the time it offers that Indonesian buffet style. It usually contains a number of local dishes. When I went there was rice, noodles, some vegetable dishes, and very commonly grilled fish or chicken. Clearly, drinks tend to be extra, even so the prices are fair.

A little tip? More or less bring some snacks plus water, if that is your preference. The day could be that long and very hot. Arguably, having something on hand between those stops might keep your energy up. Okay, or bring some sea-sickness tablets with, like your traveling on boats quite a lot. Seriously, no joke!

What to Bring on the Tour

What to bring to nusa penida

To clarify, let’s cover the ‘bring’ essentials: Swimming gear, for example a swimsuit, plus a rash vest – the sun might really be that intense! Likewise, a towel – most of the time not supplied. Really importantly? Sunscreen with that very high SPF, sunglasses plus a hat! Comfy walking shoes. The ground tends to be uneven at viewpoint locations. Your camera is extremely essential. All those sights deserve photos! Certain tours might give you a waterproof bag, and if not, you might want to have something similar if that makes sense!

The Less Great Bits

Nusa Penida roads

Just a little word on the not great points. Arguably, Nusa Penida roads, in that case, could be quite bumpy, so get ready for some bumpy vehicle trips! That may actually be unpleasant for people with a bad back, it’s almost something that must be noted. Crowds. Nusa Penida grew quite popular, so those hotspots may be extremely crowded, it’s true. Try and temper what you think you might see from all those amazing social media images versus actually being there with everyone.

Is This Tour Right for You?

Nusa Penida group tour

Actually, this tour probably works perfectly if: You only have a short amount of days to visit. The tour handles basically everything from getting over to logistics, so it tends to be super practical. People who wish to check out top sites rather than explore independently, this tour gets you to all the important view points quickly. Snorkel lovers are obviously going to love Nusa Penida. However: Perhaps not that awesome if you are unsteady on your feet given trails might be tricky, particularly for anyone who battles with mobility. Anybody disliking busy locations would find it tough. Or potentially for that independent traveler whom enjoys planning every detail by themselves.

Basically, the “Bali Nusa Penida Highlight Snorkeling and Land Tour” can really be quite a phenomenal means of experiencing the splendor of Nusa Penida. The snorkeling is first class, the vistas take your breath away, yet plan for the uneven terrain and some congested spots. All things being equal I was quite pleased I ticked it off my travel list!
