What occurred that I did not expect was that Made actually knew an area that the crowds could not be found and that still kept all the beautiful luster! And here is where I learned lots about rice growing and, actually, about some of the cultural methods behind the area. After going up some rough slopes, we stopped at a cafe on a ridge and Made let me try the region’s specialty coffee along with a typical snack, it really did turn out well.

Now the highlight, too, had to be when Made decided, very literally off the cuff, that she’d lead me away from the crowded hotspots and showed me a local art studio wherein an elderly man demonstrated Batik artwork. Truthfully, a moment I definitely will be happy about in the many years down the road.

It came from chatting about things without concern for judgment, from being offered real insight, and very importantly having my viewpoints treated like something of relevance.
