Azerbaijan Gems: Baku, Candy Mountain, Pink Lake & Besh Barmag Review

So, Azerbaijan is just a bit of a surprising country, you know? It sits there at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, and it has, very surprisingly, quite a lot of cool things to see. You might have heard of Baku, the capital. That place is rather famous, as a matter of fact. Then, too, there’s this kind of strange Candy Mountain, a Pink Lake, also Besh Barmag Mountain, and of course, the mosques. These locations actually give you a glimpse into the really cool landscape and history this country has.

Baku: Where Ancient History Joins Modern Life

Okay, so Baku is actually more than just the capital. It’s that sort of city where you can very clearly see old meeting new. You know, the old walled city, Icheri Sheher, could be thought of as this kind of maze of really small streets and old buildings. Wandering around there feels like you’re walking in the past. That said, right outside are those modern buildings. Like the Flame Towers that are just truly super tall and lit up at night. They light up and are just very, very beautiful at nighttime. So, really, that blending is just pretty cool to experience. Don’t you think so?

Now, talking about Baku, you just shouldn’t skip the Maiden Tower. That tower actually has tons of stories and is a landmark of Baku. As a matter of fact, locals have been saying that it can be traced back to as early as the 7th century! Also, the Shirvanshahs’ Palace—oh my! That shows, arguably, how wealthy the area was back in the day, in the Middle Ages. The museums there have many objects that can really help you imagine the historical setting of that time.

You know, what’s great? The Baku Boulevard is like the perfect spot to chill. Arguably it runs along the Caspian Sea. What you should probably do, in my view, is take a relaxing walk in the evening. Enjoy the breeze from the sea. If you have small kids with you, they would almost certainly adore that boat trip. They may, arguably, have the experience of their lifetimes. Moreover, it’s usually much cooler by the coast!

The Colorful Mystery of Candy Mountain

Now then, about Candy Mountain! It is sort of funny, anyway. No one really understands how it got its bands of colour. They are mostly like shades of brown. What can cause that are some differences in the soil due to a number of reasons. What do I mean? Ground water seepage or the mineral composition maybe! A great way, possibly, of getting there is to take a day trip from Baku, so that you actually soak up the setting. It’s like a place that’s out of a fairy tale.

You, probably, know what I would suggest you to do there? Explore, honestly. This whole landscape is very, very picturesque. You can spend really hours wandering between its undulations, where you might have a series of beautiful snaps in that beautiful setting! You might catch a glimpse of the nomadic tribes leading their flocks in the surroundings, in a way. When I was in that neck of woods some time ago, I recall meeting a family which, they say, lives nearby, and the stories that family were sharing with the passers-by were like pure delight!

Actually, one particular spot which I liked much, too, was the panoramic point right up the main mound! Once up there, it is just quite, nearly, fully observable why this natural monument has got such a weird, unusual moniker. As I am writing this, I could almost revisit that spectacularity: such great memories! Besides, I would recommend wearing durable, resilient shoes when rambling these trails.

The Pink Lake: A Splash of Color

Speaking of colour, you have to actually believe your eyes when you see the Pink Lake—or, actually, Lake Masazir. Now, what could lead to such a very vivid pink hue in some parts of Azerbaijan? Algae! Microorganisms live there and love very salty circumstances. That’s why its colour turns sort of pink. If you can get there on a sunny day, you’ll just have a blast, for certain. That’s because the water looks so much brighter, so to say. As I was saying, it is amazing, and it makes the whole place really nice to just visit, right?

When are you expected to visit the site? The peak period, or better say, moment when you are seemingly capturing all of the shades, runs in summertime. You should know it depends to some extent on evaporation levels as well. If the water has dried a little bit, so the density and high salinity increases, you will notice stronger colour intensity as well! You may also just want to stroll right round, enjoy a shot of those salts forming along the shores; and that will let you seize really why this very waterbody does look unique! By the way, usually people combine the lake within a bigger shot.

It might tend to be great idea, probably, for visitors to go earlier. By early, I am thinking, for instance, just at dawn or late at dusk, that being really excellent times; in fact, during the middle bits when daylight gives gentle light with just the softest of hues – I guarantee it creates the absolutely magnificent ambience – definitely! The photographers could, also, have some joy here due to an awesome photographic site around Lake Masazir – honestly speaking. It will make for lasting recall too!

Besh Barmag Mountain: The Finger of God

Alright, moving onto Besh Barmag Mountain, just between Baku and Quba! As a matter of fact, Besh Barmag translates into “Five Fingers.” The mount has such a memorable silhouette—almost, in a way, like one soaring right up toward cloud regions—so it remains well cherished in folklore of this vicinity here plus serves sort of as really one sacred site for several folks too!
