Arequipa’s Chachani Volcano: Is the 2-Day Ascent Worth It?

Arequipa’s Chachani Volcano: Is the 2-Day Ascent Worth It?

Thinking about taking on Chachani Volcano in Arequipa? It’s almost a pretty major challenge, reaching way up to about 6,075 meters, which is something like 19,931 feet. That’s a serious altitude! Taking on Chachani is that much of a chance to bag a pretty big peak without loads of mountaineering know-how, so too it’s attracting more and more hikers. The thing is, it’s not exactly a walk in the park, so, too you’re probably wondering just what you’re signing up for. This gives you the lowdown on the two-day, one-night climb, based on what I experienced, to hopefully give you a sense of if it is that right kind of adventure for you. I want to give you some details to chew on.

Why Chachani? More Than Just a Mountain, Really

Arequipa itself is beautiful, you know? It is often called the “White City” because of its gleaming buildings made from white volcanic stone. It sits really picturesquely in a valley surrounded by volcanoes, and Chachani is, like your, tallest of the bunch. Hiking Chachani is kind of attractive because, very few Andean peaks that break 6,000 meters are non-technical, so, too no ropes, ice axes, or crampons are needed, at least that is depending on the season. The bragging rights are definitely there! Beyond just the physical challenge, you will experience amazing views that stretch seemingly forever and a night sky crammed with stars. You might feel pretty insignificant looking up, like I felt!

Choosing a Tour Operator: What To Think About

Chachani climb tour operator

A number of companies out there offer this climb, alright? The prices can vary, that much is clear, but you will often get what you spend. Research well! Look for these points:

  • Acclimatization plans Check to see that they suggest some time in Arequipa (2,335 m / 7,661 ft) before your hike to deal with any altitude sickness. Some tours do that already.
  • Gear Quality You want warm gear that actually keeps you warm!
  • Guide Experience Does their experience extend to this hike?
  • Meals Included Check exactly what eats you get, to be sure it is what you might like.

My own take: Pay slightly more for a good outfit. Trust me; being up there without good support isn’t nice.

Day 1: Getting Up, Up, Up

chachani base camp

Typically, your adventure will kick off rather early, so too expect to be up way before sunrise. Most outfits will pick you up right from your hostel or hotel. You’ll then head out in a 4×4 for seemingly hours, just traveling into the mountains, that is when the view starts to pop, right? You’ll eventually get to a spot to start trekking, usually around 5,000 meters (16,404 feet). The trek to base camp can be surprisingly tiring. It’s not really super steep, just consistently uphill, so too at altitude, any pace soon becomes slow. Seriously! You will notice yourself breathing harder.

Base camp will likely just be some simple shelters or tents already set up. After you get something to eat, you are able to relax a bit, but, in a way, try and stay active, it will help you, that is, while acclimatizing. Also, hydrate. Seriously! So, too the afternoon is pretty chilled out. The guides keep a very sharp eye out for any sign of altitude problems in your party. As it gets dark, the temperatures fall fast. Layers are really essential! Supper will likely be simple, warm food. Sleep might be a bit difficult given the altitude, but close your eyes, alright!

Day 2: Summit Push and Descent

Today is that day. Getting up around 1 AM (yes, you read that correctly), to grab something to eat, and head out. You will quickly come to realize you’re moving quite slowly, really. Headlamps will illuminate your way as you trek, or is that stagger, up the slope. You should not expect switchbacks, the idea is up the slope in the dark and the quiet. Just concentrate on following the boots ahead of you, you know? It might seem awful right then, but it could be kind of special. Keep going!

When dawn starts to creep across the land you may well start feeling better, like your reward arriving. When that sun makes it over the horizon, the views will start to become sensational, and will absolutely spur you on! The final stretch to the peak can feel very tough because you are starting to run out of steam at this point. Each step feels heavy. You arrive!

Being on top is something pretty special, alright? After pictures, gasps, and maybe a bit of crying (it’s more common than people acknowledge), you have to begin that walk down. As good as those views are, what goes up must descend! Going down could be kind of painful on the knees. You just have to adopt the technique to take it slow and easy. Back at base camp, you re-pack before continuing down to where your vehicle is waiting. It has been a day. A long day! After you are back in Arequipa, that long-needed shower and a hearty meal will be well earned.

Altitude Sickness: What to Anticipate

Altitude Sickness treatment

Altitude can, actually, be your worst enemy on Chachani, so too I’m stating it as its own section. Almost everybody will experience something like a headache or be breathless; those feelings can easily pass, so that isn’t anything to be worried about necessarily. Should the symptoms get bad — meaning, that is, that they become overwhelming headaches, dizziness, not sleeping, and vomiting – get straightaway back down. Talk to your guides if you feel poor, and don’t try being a hero!

Is Chachani for You? Weighing Up the Decision, Honestly

Chachani climbing groups

Is it the adventure you really want? Well, that comes down to whether you like challenges and gorgeous vistas, of course! Chachani isn’t overly technical. Having above-average fitness is really helpful because those two days can take the wind out of your sails. Be honest in that regard! If you enjoy toughing it out and witnessing amazing things, that’s pretty excellent. Just remember, acclimatize first, you know?

If it’s all about taking pictures or just easygoing things, it’s likely not your scene. If altitude worries you a lot, consider shorter and shorter adventures close by. It just may well be too much!

Gear You’ll Need: Making Absolutely Sure You’re Ready

trekking gear

You do not want shortcuts with the stuff you bring!

  • Mountaineering Boots Warmth and sturdiness is their calling!
  • Layers, Layers, Layers It gets cold, and I am being straightforward with you. So, too plan out layers: thermals, fleeces and wind and waterproof shell is useful.
  • Gloves and Hat To retain all the warmth you might need.
  • Sun Protection The sun at altitude is a real bruiser; sunscreen, glasses, and a hat.
  • Headlamp Critical for moving about in that dark, especially before the sun gets up.
  • Backpack Just adequate enough space for a hydration pack plus snacks, so it shouldn’t be too weighty!

Final Thoughts: Chachani – Memories for Life

Is Chachani tough? I think you could bet on it! It can be that adventure you can recall when things get kind of stressful at home! Just make absolutely sure you go prepared, do it cautiously, and be conscious of what your body lets you know, is that what I’d suggest.

  • Acclimatize completely to try to give yourself the best beginning.
  • Be sensible about choosing the proper tour and do not stint on quality.
  • Listen, I mean, really listen, to what your body indicates to you!
