Okay, so you’re thinking of checking out Al Balad, Jeddah’s old town? That’s great! Believe me, it is very much something else. As a matter of fact, this place has got stories coming out of its ears, almost. That means it could very easily become one of your favorites. Right now, I’m going to get you prepped for a visit that, arguably, you won’t soon forget.

Stepping Back in Time: What Exactly is Al Balad?

Al Balad, basically the “Old Town,” it could be said, stands very proudly as the historical heart of Jeddah. That is, for people not too familiar, Jeddah happens to be a city along the Red Sea coast of Saudi Arabia. It used to be that Al Balad acted like Jeddah’s center, like the place to go, so too it was where the who’s who lived and where business got done. So, think of it this way: It’s somewhat like stepping straight into a history book that, for instance, you are actually walking around in! That is so neat!

It seems the magic has mostly to do with the very unique architecture you see, as a matter of fact. The buildings there are built in the traditional style using coral stone. Now, sometimes this stone is just staring back at you, as a matter of fact. In other words, this will give you the raw, original view. Also, very very much there’s this sense you’re dealing with something from way, way back. Also, those rawashin – the wooden window coverings – are just something else! I mean, these details, basically, they contribute in some respects to Al Balad’s charm, maybe even making it an UNESCO World Heritage site. Honestly, it is like the world is agreeing with us that it really needs protecting!

I can tell you one thing from my experience, if you very very much love getting the most out of every place you visit, then going with a guide, basically, to Al Balad might be one of the smartest decisions you make. I say this very strongly. Why? That is a good question, which will require much answer! As I was saying, a local guide, they’ve got, well, they’re armed with tons of info on just every building, not only, as well as a full awareness about Al Balad stories and stuff. I actually got way more out of things than just roaming around with literally nothing going on.

Here is one suggestion. Basically, on your own, basically you might simply admire a building from the outside, maybe even walk by and shrug your shoulders without taking too much interest, frankly. You will soon change your perception, almost overnight, anyway. That, really, makes a difference. Another angle is the stories. Nasseef House: Back when, Nasseef House used to be one of Al Balad’s really tall, awesome houses, basically. It was so very central! Kings, they also used to crash here. They would plan really good stuff from this great building. Of course, there’s the books that you get to browse and browse if books are, apparently, the things that you like.
Al-Shafi Mosque: Do you appreciate a good old place of peace, in a religious spot? Because the Al-Shafi Mosque is considered, arguably, among Jeddah’s oldest mosques. A bit like this, but with some great architecture is worth pausing at, basically. Anyway, it brings that certain level of serene respect.
Old Markets (Souks): Oh yes. And souks is where it’s at! What you get, almost, is the very traditional style marketplace. Not only, this really means, you actually can pick up cool, traditional items like jewelry, garments and perfumes. That sounds like so much fun. Try things. Haggle, you might even try and drive that price down a bit.
Bab Makkah: And before I almost forget! Bab Makkah used to serve as the main entrance to Makkah (Mecca), or so the locals would say. Apparently, they made it into a historical marker or stuff of Jeddah. The importance of it, definitely, is amazing. It should feel just as important to visit it!

Making the Most of Your Visit: Helpful Tips

Okay, if you were like me, you’re the type of person that loves a super planned trip, basically! So I am going to cover some pro pointers for going to see Al Balad. Ready? Okay!

Best Time to Visit: Really and truly, cooler months — anytime from November until February – is what you should go for. It seems the weather, honestly, can make you feel it. It could be amazing! Very very unlike if you came, just for example, in the summer when I was really very overwhelmed, even just a little. So, try going, definitely, between November to February. That could be one option to very easily make yourself at home, which makes moving around and looking all over pretty easy.
Dress Code: Saudi Arabia is very much conservative. Because of that, keep those body parts well-covered. Arguably, loose-fitting attire just works very right, anyway. Light colours, very specifically so that the sunlight bounces straight off of them and back to outer space and everywhere! But that said, respect local custom and still feel so good! That, to me, really seems that there’s the way you blend respectfully, which makes things smoother, that.
Stay Hydrated: No matter where you look, just make sure you got some bottled water for your gulps and stuff, is all I’m trying to tell you, actually. I think walking, specifically the hot climates, this really ends up needing regular gulps of water to stay upright, that kind of feeling!
Comfortable Shoes: Those old paths they look amazing, that it really really ends up causing blisters and hurts really badly if those fancy sandals that actually look great on your feet cause cuts all along your feet.
Bargaining: As for the souks? I have so much confidence! Haggling’s fun, very much an everyday thing! But also, respect everybody doing it. And it must be great! I honestly have seen some serious wins through friendly negotiations. Also, have seen them fail when both parts acted like crazy loons. If there is one take-home item, that it would have to do with those local ethics rules when bargaining over stuff.
Photography: You might also wanna just respect everybody there and maybe try getting clearance when getting pictures of peeps out there, very specifically so of some ladies. Okay. Sometimes, somebody just doesn’t really wanna be pictured like crazy, but the way you approach peeps very respectfully, arguably it is almost how you get that cool shot. Also, a way that everybody gets their privacy respected and they like it.

Finding the Right Tour: Options and Recommendations

Alright, you’ve probably figured, I’m pro using a guided walkabout when checking places like Al Balad, definitely because somebody walks you through stuff and shows it all. When you look on where to, you basically must make the smartest thing to get a thing like that lined up properly. Because sometimes somebody else looks awesome, and then kinda not.

Online Tour Providers: Like Viator or GetYourGuide? Maybe check some travel pages also? I basically mean, it just depends. Look closely, though, but I’ve been burned with ones that looked amazing but the opposite when they started telling about a walk through of my Al Balad adventure. Okay, now maybe very much there are even reviews and those past tour person experiences, almost. At least you can gauge what they’re thinking! You might almost call a spot to get the questions down there as they buzz over you.
Local Travel Agencies: A place you get them. Not only, very very likely so you’re basically helping little shop local places too to make food money, I hope? When they say they know a thing of where, you might feel better very truly trusting their judgment. I might check at local Jeddah establishments but who’s awesome? Probably somebody also likes the vibe to what what it is about! Then start doing an Al Balad adventure or trip through to get down!
Hotel Concierge: So I used the hotel to get a contact too or a place. Honestly it depends on how I find what places work. See if concierge people knows good trips and stuff about! They typically kinda very know spots, in my belief and knowledge so at least, it gets the stuff arranged well. What did peeps over place-like like concierge like before and stuff I could tell ya stuff on!

Personal Anecdote: My Own Al Balad Experience

Let me tell you about my walkabout when I went, definitely. But, so very seriously I basically only planned in part! Which probably could have failed real hard. And I kinda needed the concierge person at the hotel people to put something into to plan and start and that. Turns out very amazing and super thanks! To the people and the hotel, they really made this tour work out and like totally were super fun, and I started digging old Jeddah there on the go. You need good peeps with ya that know and it helped make what a tour of this old space looked!

One old street I really wanted on this tour it would be at Nassif home. My contact through one walking thing showed and was saying what old Jeddah like lived was and all this way way back cool spot or something to the Nassif home? And was like the rulers would visit over here, in some respects! The books and old like, feel vibes really I got those that spot or there to see some great! But you gotta, be like, and plan kinda, stuff ya wish!

Definitely so it has this feel to Jeddah you cannot fake at all in those parts, and something almost I was super glad somebody said yes basically cause like maybe it’s like some very fun cool memory trip basically if the trip turns kinda bad! Get planning if gonna visit old Jeddah’s best so those visits and memories, always kinda are super.
