Akshardham Temple in Delhi, well, it’s quite something! It’s way bigger than I even thought, a sprawling complex dedicated to Swaminarayan, and really, a showcase of Hindu art, culture, and spirituality. I recently went on the Akshardham Temple tour, that included the much talked about water light show, and I made my way there by car, which honestly, is pretty much the only way to get around comfortably in Delhi! I wanted to share all the things I discovered. Hopefully it makes your visit easier to get ready for. That way, you can relax knowing you didn’t forget anything.
First Impressions of Akshardham
As you get closer, the first view of Akshardham is truly something else; the sheer size and the way it’s built are honestly captivating. It feels like you’re looking at something from another era, I suppose. The carving work, everything shimmers in the sunlight and it’s easy to feel a sense of peace before you even set foot inside. Security can be, you know, a bit strict; it’s somewhat like going through airport security, is that they don’t allow bags, cameras, phones or anything of the like inside. Free lockers are available, so too, you don’t have to worry about your stuff getting lost.
The Architecture: Pretty impressive, in a way
The main temple, or Swaminarayan Akshardham, is constructed with, basically, pink sandstone and white marble, and get this; it’s all built without any steel! The detailed carvings depict deities, scenes from Hindu mythology, and spiritual leaders; it’s truly artwork, really, to be admired. Walking around the complex, you soon notice something; everything appears to have a reason, or some story to tell.
Exhibitions: Way more than just looking around
Akshardham offers, just a little, several exhibitions designed to give you all the knowledge on the life and teachings of Swaminarayan. Sahajanand Darshan is one such exhibition, and get this, it features animatronic figures that narrate different stories from Swaminarayan’s life. There’s also a boat ride exhibition named Sanskruti Darshan, a slightly unique experience that takes you through Indian history dating back nearly ten thousand years. Then too, there’s the movie theatre (Nilkanth Darshan) that shows a film on Swaminarayan’s pilgrimage across India as a young boy; it’s pretty amazing cinematography. Heads up, you need to buy tickets for these exhibitions when you get to the ticket counter.
The Water Light Show: An Absolutely Sensational Event
Now, the water light show, that is called Sahaj Anand Water Show, which takes place in the evening, that is clearly a highlight of any trip to Akshardham. This show presents an allegory from the Katha Upanishad, and this is shown by using projections, lasers, water jets, and sound. The story talks about the cycle of life, death, and rebirth; the visual effects and storytelling work to bring something both meaningful and entertaining, or something like that. Shows are after sunset, but you should get there way early; grab yourself a spot, since it’s, generally, super popular.
