Express Guided Tour: Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill – A Review

Rome, too, is a spot with countless layers of time just stacked on top of one another, and honestly, if you only have a little time to soak it all in, getting an “express” guided tour sounds like a good way to check off a bunch of bucket list items. Very, very recently, I gave one of these tours a whirl that covered the Colosseum, Roman Forum, as well as Palatine Hill, and here is what I thought.

Express Guided Tour: Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill – A Review

What You Get: An Overview

Colosseum interior

Alright, so, this tour very much crams a whole lot into a pretty short period, that is for certain. We’re talking usually around three hours, just enough to get your feet wet at some of Rome’s hugest attractions. Typically, it starts with the Colosseum where you, too, will almost certainly get to skip the really, really long entrance line – which, trust me, that’s a win. Afterward, you make your way toward the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, that are both completely overflowing with ruins and history. Tours typically include a local guide, too it’s almost always someone that seems very well informed, ready to share details and a bit of storytelling to just kinda bring the place to life.

The Colosseum: Gladiator Glory (but fast!)

Gladiators in Colosseum

Seeing the Colosseum is definitely one of those moments that gives you a shiver, alright? It’s unbelievably large. On the express tour, it’s likely that you don’t get too much time there but they move fast. Yet, it is almost guaranteed you will hear about gladiators, the mock naval battles that really, really happened, plus some details relating to the architecture, as well as stories relating to just the sheer scale. One thing you quickly will realize is that an express tour simply doesn’t afford a great amount of time to wander freely and honestly soak up every tiny little bit; it is a highlights reel.

Roman Forum: A Stroll Through Ancient Politics

Roman Forum

The Roman Forum can feel just a bit like wandering through a gigantic outdoor museum that’s, basically, completely without walls. Seriously, your guide helps make heads or tails of the ruins that surround you everywhere – from the Senate building to the various temples – as they will probably explain ancient Roman life, law, politics and basically everything in between. Palatine Hill is nearby, too, and this one, so to speak, comes packed with some legendary views, alright? They always claim it’s that area where Romulus is thought to have started Rome. It, too, adds a layer to your historical mental picture.

Who is this tour suited for?

Palatine Hill Rome

In my opinion, the “Express” tour version would probably be amazing for folks that are trying to take in several hotspots, just as fast as they possibly can, yet want just enough expertise so that they don’t seem as though they just looked at rocks all day. Those who have just a bit of knowledge about Ancient Rome, that will want to see all the crucial landmarks without spending the entire day are likely going to want this. Though, should you be that person that really wants to examine every little piece, or really take pictures and soak it all in slowly, very likely, this just probably won’t allow that. I saw that, if somebody wants to enjoy everything at their speed, this really does not offer that.

The Upsides: Speed, Knowledge, and Skipping the Line

Tourist guide explaining

Let’s speak of just some of the stuff I, very specifically, thought worked nicely about this particular trip. A lot of it actually had to do with organization, just in the planning and, so, overall simplicity of how that day goes. The line skipping element makes a real, genuine change for getting the very most out of your restricted time and I appreciated learning some fun facts from a proper, actual person compared to attempting to read plaques. Time management seemed reasonable enough, even while being a glimpse.

What Might Bother Some People: Time Constraints, Group Size

Crowded Colosseum

Well, a couple of areas can present problems for you depending upon tastes, you may not wish to hear this yet, here it is. Those who choose an “express” tour, need to appreciate just how tightly paced the trip ends up being and it gives rather little room for pausing and self exploration, so prepare. Huge tour parties tend to be just a tad unwieldy at times and if one would like just that cozy one on one type ambiance it is possibly too enormous. Not all the individuals are truly big fans when forced to remain locked into a strict schedule plus route!

Final Thoughts

In general, should you only have a little amount of time and honestly really want to observe the key points of ancient Rome (i.e., you plan on being in Rome just for a couple days, that is) that express guided experience may, very easily, be worth thinking about, just for the easiness of that all encompassing package and understanding of its specialists. But those people who really wish that extremely top end tour need to think carefully about whether or not fast moving form fits into their style!
