Review: Is a Djerba, Douz, and Matmata Day Trip Right for You?

Planning a trip to Djerba, Tunisia, and wondering if that full-day excursion to Douz, plus Matmata is a good use of your precious vacation time? So, too it’s a pretty long day trip that combines desert landscapes, a bit of Star Wars history, and a glimpse into unique Berber culture. Basically, I recently did that very trip, plus I thought I’d share what that day involved, what I experienced, and if I feel that is a trip others might appreciate.

Review: Is a Djerba, Douz, and Matmata Day Trip Right for You?

Why This Desert Day Trip? Is It Just Another Tourist Trap?

First things first, right? What’s so alluring with traveling from Djerba all that way to Douz plus Matmata? Actually, Djerba is this pretty island with stunning beaches, yet it doesn’t offer much in the way of seriously different landscapes or historical sites right on the island itself. I mean, this day trip promises that peek into the Sahara Desert near Douz and the bizarre, almost lunar landscape that is Matmata. So, too the “Star Wars” connection in Matmata — with the Hotel Sidi Driss, that stood in for Luke Skywalker’s childhood home — that alone is a pretty big draw for some people. It gives you more or less that opportunity to see quite a bit of Tunisia’s southern region when you are short on time.

The Long and Winding Road: Getting There

Okay, here’s that unvarnished truth, right? This is basically a long day. I mean, the drive from Djerba to Douz is about three to four hours, possibly depending on the traffic and just how many photo stops that tour group wants to make. Seriously, that means that you will be spending a good chunk of that day just traveling. Though, much of that drive goes through gradually changing landscapes that make that trip a little more interesting, like your guide is there to provide tidbits on that region, plus its culture.

As a matter of fact, just know ahead of time, too, that that schedule can feel packed. Maybe a stop at that Roman causeway that links Djerba to that mainland is in order, so too it’s a visit to a local market where you can find anything from spices to textiles. The first leg of this journey could be, honestly, just as enriching as reaching Douz, like your soak in that culture and local flair from minute one. Just plan, right, for some potential “comfort stops” because that Sahara isn’t exactly known for that abundance of facilities.

Road to Sahara Desert

Douz: The Gateway to that Sahara

Alright, so too it’s Douz! Dubbed pretty poetically “The Gateway to that Sahara,” this small town offers an introduction to the desert, even though it’s really, very on that edge. Anyway, when you arrive, typically your organized tour should include, too, a camel ride or that chance to rent a quad bike and just explore some of those dunes. As I was saying, it’s your chance to seriously embrace that desert vibe.

As a matter of fact, I opted for the camel ride, that turned out to be far more picturesque. Seriously, wobbling atop one of these so-called ships of the desert gave me rather unique views and photo opportunities. Very honestly, that desert air felt invigorating and that silence, broken mostly with the occasional camel groan, really added to that atmosphere. Now, if you would be an adrenaline junkie, that quad bike experience likely gives you that blast of speed and a seriously fun way to carve some tracks in those sand dunes. Just bear in mind that that camel rides and that quad biking usually come at that extra cost, not included in your basic tour price.

Matmata: Sci-Fi Meets Berber Heritage

Okay, next up is that completely odd settlement of Matmata. Typically, it’s known for those unique troglodyte homes; that are structures dug directly into that earth. Very many Berber families continue living in such homes to stay seriously cool during those blistering summer months and actually warm during those cold winter nights. Clearly, it’s climate-controlled housing, courtesy of Mother Nature!

Anyway, the tour typically includes, too, that visit to one of those homes where that family welcomes travelers and offers that glimpse into daily life. You, right, you will typically get to sip some local tea, possibly sample a homemade treat, so too it’s all when learning all regarding that history of these dwellings and of those people. And also? Most of your photos end up going there. Of course, Matmata gained fame, so too, for that Hotel Sidi Driss that became Luke Skywalker’s home on Tatooine in that original “Star Wars” film. I mean, that hotel still operates, and visitors get to walk around that courtyard where so many famous scenes were shot, that is, if that visit tickles some geeky bone.

What To Eat

Food wise, be prepared for, like your experience being pretty heavily oriented towards that tourist crowd. I mean, many of those tours include lunch at one of those restaurants that mainly caters to those day-trippers. Arguably, food will likely be that standard Tunisian fare — couscous, tagine, maybe some grilled meats. You, right, you probably shouldn’t expect a five-star meal; yet you shouldn’t let that prevent you from being adventurous. Seriously, give something a go like a Brik; that crispy, thin pastry filled either with egg, tuna, or even potatoes. It will be that taste of Tunisia you won’t, likely, forget anytime soon.

The Verdict: Is This Trip Right for You?

Here is that rub, then: is this day trip worthwhile? Right, If you just have short time in Djerba and you also want that feel for that Sahara Desert and the culture with southern Tunisia, possibly, it will be worth considering. Just know that, seriously, that day involves a whole lot of traveling. Like your, the time spent actually experiencing Douz as well as Matmata could feel pretty rushed.

You might appreciate that excursion if:

  • That prospect for seeing some desert scenery excites you.
  • Possibly, you would love learning all regarding that unique Berber culture as well as architecture.
  • It might be you love “Star Wars” plus want to just stand within that actual filming location.

You probably wouldn’t like that day trip if:

  • Just traveling that long really doesn’t work well for you
  • Arguably, you might think heavily touristed spots just really aren’t enjoyable.
  • Possibly, you, seriously, would prefer just kicking back at your pool or just on that beach

I mean, just plan wisely, and then weigh those pros along with those cons before reaching your decision. Should that desert beckon, that might prove pretty worthwhile; very much so because time there might turn magical.
