Temples, courtyards, shrines… the layers build on one another as you ascend the slope. It is actually alright to take photos, but please be mindful and respectful; those locals are there for something bigger than social media. It might well be worthwhile to ask your guide, while there, about what is okay and perhaps not. Or the whole experience might just actually offend someone.
What Could Make or Break Your Trip?
Weather plays a big role, of course. On a super-clear day, the views of Mount Agung from Besakih, are really just…amazing. When clouds come, that is really a mood shift. Pack for warmth as it can get breezy up there, and yeah, be sure to wear clothing that actually covers your shoulders and knees; this is important temple etiquette. Communication: now this is another tricky one. Sure, most guides speak some English, possibly a lot. What I think actually counts, though, is how well they share ideas. Do they only sort of recite what they are taught, or can they relate to the things that you really respond to?

Sunrise or golden hour, or maybe not? A shot of the temple when those skies actually glow is absolutely magical, so I am told. Maybe your guide is open to arranging it? The light does make all the difference, actually. Focus: don’t simply zoom in on the grand vista. Shoot, or try to, some really candid shots of local people (with their consent, of course), detailed carvings, or basically little offerings. So many things really combine to tell that tale. Just go easy, yeah? Besakih might just possibly look impressive through a lens, but arguably feels all that more incredible just, you know, standing there. Take in all the detail. And, arguably, just live. Breathe that island life.
Is it Worth It? Weighing Pros and Cons
Look, the cost thing really depends on what tour operator is being used. What is being provided? Is it private car transportation, included entry fees, the guide’s expertise? Or are you mostly just, like, paying for the transport, perhaps? When weighing all the factors, I consider that this tour could just be a nice day out, and then again it could actually be quite impactful. That would really depend, possibly just entirely, on your personal approach and that connection made with your guide. Consider whether you are the type that is more comfortable rambling at your own pace or do you gain plenty when something more specific is being shown. Very likely one has more impact, or doesn’t. Besakih might just actually be a beautiful temple to visit. Whether going with that specific private tour… just weigh what you see against yourself.
