Levi Pallastunturi National Park E-Fatbike Trip: Is It Worth It?

Hey, you know, if you’re scouting for something truly special, how about thinking about Lapland? Specifically, Levi in Finnish Lapland may just grab your attention! Nestled, almost smack-dab, between the fells of Levi and Pallastunturi exists this enormous, wild place just full of scenic beauty! It’s a big national park that is like nothing you may have seen before. Now, very many people may not consider an e-fatbike as a way to experience such raw splendor. That is fair enough, of course! However, I got the chance to try just such an adventure. I’m ready to talk about if it is, perhaps, worth your time and money. Spoiler alert: there’s a strong likelihood that I very much enjoyed it.

Why E-Fatbiking in Levi Pallastunturi?

E-Fatbiking Lapland

So, an e-fatbike… it’s basically a bicycle with, you see, oversized tires, sometimes nearly 4 or 5 inches wide! These bad boys, that is, the tires, let you roll across sand, snow, and all sorts of tricky landscapes, and I mean with a bit of help from an electric motor. What a fun idea! Given how it combines exploring nature with just a touch of effort it allows almost anyone the chance to see the backcountry! Why consider this form of biking? Well, because the national park is absolutely huge, for starters! It’s so vast, you see, that trekking all the appealing spots on foot, just like your legs will carry you, could require weeks. An e-fatbike? It just, perhaps, lets you cover ground more swiftly. I am going to guess you have limited holiday time like I do!

Booking and Getting Started

Levi Finland Bike Rental

You will find several companies offer this gig around Levi; the town center has various places where you might find what you need, or your lodging may set it up, as well. This is where, arguably, a little due-diligence comes in. Consider, at least, that package inclusions can be pretty diverse. Some tours include a guide and meals; others? Well, others only rent the bike to you. As I’d not used an e-fatbike before, anyway, I preferred a guided choice. Safety first is the way to think of it! These tours generally, or sometimes, offer instruction on operating the bicycle and its quirks and features. A guide, usually, understands the place, so you won’t get lost, which can always be a concern, honestly. The rentals are sometimes approximately €80 – €150, even so, so it depends on length and package.

What to Expect On The Trails

The path conditions, well, those can be so incredibly diverse in the park, and that changes everything. So, you are thinking “snow”, possibly, if visiting during the winter season. However, based on the time, be ready for ice and slush. The summer offers dried dirt and gravel tracks in certain areas but it means you might have to navigate boggy parts and rivers and streams to cross, honestly. Don’t you feel, also, that conditions even change hour to hour! Your guide can assess what conditions, arguably, are like; listening to him can save an issue. Another pro to going that way! The terrain in some respects varies as the park goes on, ranging from modest, rolling hills to climbs that can tax you. Good gears are definitely beneficial!

What, then, are you really going to see? Honestly, if you’re really lucky, you’re very much in for a treat, especially while cruising. Immense open fells that can offer endless vistas might well astound you. There are, by the way, also thickly forested parts, typically with old, stooping trees which, often, are just fascinating to look at, actually. Wildlife is very abundant, and sightings might happen if you just keep your eyes alert. So keep that in mind, too! Reindeer or elk do often make appearances; smaller animals include different birds or hares, which are so abundant up there.

The E-Fatbike Itself: A Closer Look

Electric Fat Bike Review

I, you see, was riding a mid-tier e-fatbike. In my case the assistance from the motor was so critical. Given the shifting slopes it gave my legs assistance at times. Get ready for different amounts of “assist” modes to play with. Eco will probably extend battery; but “turbo” or something, literally, will let you feel the punch! Just consider the battery use. This is because if it is very cold it might drain faster! I would be remiss not discussing tires either. You have them set to the specific pressures, usually adjusted for ground type. Less psi leads, perhaps, to traction; too low may mean pinch flats, possibly! Listen closely to the guidance you will get. You might think this bike can do all the hard work. This simply is, perhaps, not correct. A bit of fitness just makes it better!

Scenery and Photo Opportunities

Lapland Photography

Let’s be clear, or try to, Lapland is famous for its landscapes. Golden hour is something quite nice! Golden light, basically around either sunrise and/or dusk gives an appealing tone across land. It can provide great photo potential that can make all the landscapes even more gorgeous than ever, seriously! Do not possibly just keep watch up in the sky! Aurora Borealis, which many dream about seeing, could just pop up in the darker times, even so. Find locations that have open areas. Get away, if possible, from ambient lights; enjoy a natural show that seems almost alien from our own reality. Respect the scenery too it’s almost important. Do not trash or mark places; leave only some footprints. Keep quiet, so that we do not interrupt nature that tends to be easily disturbed.

What to Wear and Bring

lapland clothing

Think about the weather a lot! Finland, honestly, is no joke in many months. So how would one dress well, more or less? In the cooler months, layered attire could be your best solution! A base layer with moisture wicking ability, very good insulation like fleece and down, including something to keep outside components like snow away! This also protects against strong winds! Warmer months do bring slightly milder situations but the temperatures can and often change swiftly, as well, more or less! Pack spare socks as well! To protect fingers or even toes you may also need an adequate, very nice type of winter boot, so don’t forget about them either! If weather changes quickly, be certain your tour, at least, packs suitable gear too.
