Timanfaya Evening Tour Review: Is the Volcano Dinner Worth It?

Timanfaya National Park, that striking spot on Lanzarote, really is one of a kind. I mean, it’s a landscape that feels like another planet, you know? And so, many people recommend seeing it, especially when the sun’s starting to go down. This is, really, because that’s when the colors pop, right? So, a bunch of companies run these evening tours that wrap up with, well, a dinner cooked using the volcano’s natural heat! This review? Well, this is all about if that dinner experience, that is, that “Volcano Dinner” thing, is actually worth your time and your money.

Why Choose an Evening Tour? The Appeal of Timanfaya at Twilight

Timanfaya Twilight

Okay, so daytime at Timanfaya? That is seriously impressive. You can really see the raw power of nature then, you know? It’s kind of a stark beauty in the sun. But so, there’s just something extra magical about seeing it as the day ends, you know? That’s very true! The sun, you see, begins dipping towards the horizon. The whole park just sort of glows in this awesome reddish-orange color. Then the shadows? Well, they get longer and they make the volcanic landscape appear so incredibly dramatic, and it is like the land is stretching, right?

Anyway, that evening air? It’s generally a little cooler, right, which honestly, is very pleasant. This is, of course, after the sun beats down all day. So, those coach tours that buzz around in the day? Well, they thin out, right. Making the whole experience less crowded, I would suggest. Which makes it more enjoyable, right?

Experiencing the Park Under a Setting Sun

So, during the evening tour, I took? First of all, we got to ride the “Volcano Bus”. That circles that heart of the park, right? They will generally do that! Listening to the guide tell the stories of how the volcanoes there formed, it is interesting you know. Even that Devil is there, “El Diablo”. That logo that César Manrique drew! That is very much the logo of Timanfaya, is that true? All that? That all just felt a bit more special as the sunlight softened the ground all around us, is that true?

And, oh, so those demonstrations? Well, they put on with the geothermal energy? That is super fascinating, still, I will say. Though so, imagine those geysers blasting steam. Well, doing that against the backdrop of this sky that’s bursting with orange and pink and red? I’d say it’s an unbelievable sight! So, just standing there, seeing that? That makes you feel tiny, like really connected to our planet, you know?

The Volcano Dinner: A Culinary Experience?

Volcano Dinner Lanzarote

Right, so here’s where things get…interesting, very very much indeed! The part many people are super curious about? Well, that’s the Volcano Dinner, right? I mean, it sounds incredibly cool! A restaurant, the “El Diablo” one? That uses the heat from the volcano. Which then cooks your food! It is, really, such a great gimmick, honestly, as a way to start! Yet so, does it live up to its hype? In my view, the answer is, very much indeed, it is sort of “yes, but…”!

How It Works: Cooking with Geothermal Heat

Okay, so here is that deal: very nearly El Diablo has a big grill over a hole. One that rises to geothermal heat from way deep down, OK? So that means the chefs then will cook some fantastic foods over this heat, naturally! Very interesting right? Okay! What foods? Usually meats and fish, you see. All these foods are grilled! Really, you should get one with the classic Canarian potatoes too! You know the potatoes, right? The ones they serve with that mojo sauce? (red and green versions, both good). They tend to taste really lovely when volcanic fire touches them.

So the concept? It’s just awesome. The fact your dinner is cooked over a real volcano? Great for stories, if nothing else, really, I will say. Anyway, it makes for fantastic travel bragging rights to your friends when you get back. Is that correct? But the reality is it is more or less like…that is like eating in any average tourist place, nearly, I’d say. I’ll explain what I mean though, naturally.

Taste and Atmosphere: Setting Expectations

So look, the food I tried, that wasn’t very poor in any way, you see? It was pretty good in that sense. But the flavors themselves aren’t all that better than food from your normal restaurant that has gas stoves for cooking, apparently! To me anyway. What made the El Diablo eatery a let down, almost, was that general experience around the taste side.

And the restaurant? Often that can be mega-packed, it looks like, very busy at the night tours that I saw, very stressful you see? It also gets very warm, right? And you have the aromas from loads of grilling stations all in a confined location. So what results is not especially like that comfortable, nice experience, often!

And so, to this point, it all depends, quite clearly, upon personal things you appreciate, right. So do you generally see places that just give that feel of ‘experience’ or those offering ‘really good dining?’ very, you see? Okay, now it makes some sense I think.

The Tour Experience: What Else to Expect

Timanfaya Tour Experience

So what I’ve been blabbing on about so far, is that volcano dinner? So there is just a bit more that the trip includes you will note, by the way!

Beyond the Dinner: Additional Highlights

Alright, generally these tours might often add stops around some locations! You could see the so called ‘Green Lagoon’ (also referred to as ‘Charco de Los Clicos’) where the cool green lake stands out, very sharp contrast next to black sand. Or what about a trip down by those fascinating vineyards they put up to grow through lava, which would make for an experience unlike most other places? Many places in this volcanic island seem like this kind of situation honestly!

So, a really strong plus of those trips lies within someone doing everything. That would include not driving so you can just have that peace of mind just taking everything in! I saw one benefit when I tried this, basically.

Potential Downsides: Crowds and Time Constraints

Now, that is really the truth though. The groups on these sorts of journeys end up, you see, with that feel of ‘herded along,’, and, very generally, things aren’t really flexible. Then for me, I never found it really bothered me but something maybe that’s good when booking you remember to ask about, clearly, you see? That the small groups are often priced a whole load more because they allow far greater degrees in how that itinerary operates.

Is the Timanfaya Evening Tour Worth It?

Timanfaya Worth It

Right, the really large question? Well, “Is that Timanfaya Evening tour, that with the volcano dinner thing included really ‘worth it’, basically you see?” Anyway! In truth the answer is almost kind of individual. So for certain travellers…well, totally, yeah. It probably would be very good, truly!

Who Will Enjoy This Tour?

Those wanting convenient options when they visit Timanfaya…then I advise them that is pretty very cool. Are the sunset hours awesome where taking loads and load of lovely, super photos, you see. All while gaining just this fantastic memory of some eatery unlike hardly every other eatery. And so for these people, yeah go make those arrangements right away and start visiting them. I really very really recommend you should!

When to Consider Alternatives

For many those, really considering food-quality and relaxed kind experiences will more or less become left kinda dissatisfied and annoyed, possibly!

Alternatively perhaps! Well, it maybe makes a better idea which involved that normal access at Lanzarote, you see, you hire the set transportation and then that dinner can probably be had, naturally. As things go with that place that you mostly kinda fancy, in a less hyped-up one anyway…you see?
